As an aside, I played Protoss in BW for about 3 years straight. I can't imagine what it would be like to not use 8/9/0 or to not move your hand around the keyboard. I think any BW player who didn't relocate their hands during a game was probably D rank, potentially D+. Also, it's not just out of habit. There are no disadvantages to using all your hotkey potential and becoming comfortable with them. There's just no reason for a good player to allow their ability to manipulate the keyboard regress. I use 8/9/0 in SC2 because I have the option to, unlike most. It's a conscious choice and one that I'll continue to make. Haha. Anyway, your keyboard hand should have the entire keyboard covered (not counting numpad/arrows). You need to memorize where the keys are in relation to your default hand position, typically using F/J as markers. Once you know the spacing of your keys you'll be able to hit any key from your default position without looking. Using a different keyboard will explode your brain, btw. There's a reason people bring their own keyboards to BW/SC2 tournaments. EDIT: JangBi's keyboard is the best keyboard on

Therefor in game I can use al my 123456 for army/structures, but have my nexus/scout/whatever on my 9/0. Oh really? Then how is it that the Logitech Mini Optical, a mouse that DOESN'T HAVE side buttons the most well-known mouse in Starcraft progaming? Now you can hit 7-0 with your fingers. Why do people find this so hard to understand? Moving your hand around the keyboard becomes fairly easy once you get used to it, and being able to use 890 is actually useful.

No progamer sets keys to his mouse EVER. It is against fair play rules. Next time search before coming across as a fool. This reply is overly aggressive. This is not profession Broodwar, every tournament is different, and many of these 890 observations come from play-from-home tournaments where players can use whatever configuration they want. Reconfiguring 9 and 0 to side mouse buttons is a great suggestion for more casual players.

He could have just said what he used, instead of blabbering about things he had no clue about.

I'm starting to get a bit better, though, by randomly hotkeying my first scouting probe to 0 and 9 ever once in a while.

He suggested everyone in the thread was dumb, and then went on to post a dumb answer that is severely wrong. He is not talking about joe shmoe sitting at home. His response CLEARLY states "pros", does he not?

I did try using the search button for the past 30 minutes but I just can't find a good answer; is there any legal way to assign mouse 4 and mouse 5 to "9" and "0" in Starcraft 2? I do not have a microsoft or Logitech mouse, and all of the third party programs aren't compatible with Starcraft 2 somehow : / Thanks in advance. if you're a piano player you should know how to move your hand quickly and accurately over to the 9/0 keys. it's easy when you get used to it.

8 hotkeys isn't enough for me, especially since I don't use macros and other mouse macro crap.

You just have to lift your hand up a bit (I am a guitar player though...). The key is to not assign anything you have to use often at 9 and 0, like an upgrade building. This makes it a lot swifter for transitions. As a toss player, I sometimes put my obs at 0 or 9 because it's a unit I have to have hotkeyed but I don't always move it around and the hotkey doesn't interfere with my other macro'ing (I put my production buildings from 4-8). I do not play at pro level nor do I aspire to, but using 0 and 9 as hotkeys? Easy. You just have to get used to use them. I find it easier to use 0 and 9 than 7-8.

One reason I do it is that while it is a jump in the keyboard, i know the distance by heart and I can easily slide my hand over and hit either 9 or 0. In addition, if i were to have a single scout set to a middle key, there is a higher chance of me misclicking, which would be really noobish. Second reason is that it clears up key space for other control groups which I access more often. This is how I hot key zerg: 1-4 units, 5 hatches (thinking about changing it to 4 tho), 6 queens. (I use backspace inject method which is similar to 9/0 keying in that its preference and you have to slide your hands all the way over to use it.) a random overlord has no place in slot 6 obviously. edit: oh and since there is a second ctrl key on the right side assigning 890 hotkeys for me is ridiculously fast (slide hand, thumb right ctrl, middle finger 890)

i use 0 for dropships and 9 for banshees, most of the time. sometimes i swap them out depending on my build order - if i have too many different types of units to give all their own hotkeys or not
