I just can't get my head around it, I'm standing at two meters and eight years of piano playing experience, and how someone, especially a short Korean can use the hotkeys "9" and "0" easily is beyond me. Especially as they seem to prefer 9 and 0 to for example 6 and 7. Can anybody explain how they do it?

P.S. I did try using the search button for the past 30 minutes but I just can't find a good answer; is there any legal way to assign mouse 4 and mouse 5 to "9" and "0" in Starcraft 2? I do not have a microsoft or Logitech mouse, and all of the third party programs aren't compatible with Starcraft 2 somehow : / Thanks in advance.

I think it's harder to use those keys now that blizzard has set up all the hotkeys on the left hand side, but if you think practice using more hotkeys you'll just get use to them.

I'm not sure about the whole pro-grammable mouse thing, but be careful as Blizzard seems to have a very strong stance against macros and such.
All the pros got dat Ichie.

Some players move their hands and use their thumb on the right control keys to set these. That's why with small hands 6 and 7 might actually be worse (farthest from control keys).

@topic: i guess many pros had their hands in the middle of the keyboard in sc1 because the keys were more spreaded, in sc2 its all around "wasd" so its a weird feeling to use the higher numbers

@ PS: you can do it via drivers for most gaming mouses

In SC1 they used 9p0p to build probes (those are close), so they just used 9 and 0 for nexuses in SC2 out of habit?
Sweet.

Probably force of habit, as many hotkeys were on the right side of the keyboard in BW. Also, since control groups in BW were limited to 12 units, many more control groups were used for units, leaving fewer for production buildings.

To clarify; it's not a macro, I just want my Mouse 4 to act as if I pressed the "9" key, and Mouse 5 should become "0". Also, Fasho, how does that work? My left hand is in a "typing" position, you mean that some players put their hand in another position?

In Brood War, Protoss players would use 0 and 9 for Nexuses because they would usually be hitting 0p9p for Probes... Maybe they just kept using it =).

edit: rackdude beat me to it, with the exact same response...

I thought the WOW mouse worked, the one with like 20 buttons lol. But seriously, it's not that hard using hotkeys 0 and 9. It depends what you have on it, for example you wouldn't have your main army on those hotkeys, those hotkeys are usually reserved for production facilities. I play Terran since Broodwar so I'm use to having my scans on 0 and 9 so I just have my orbitals on 0 and 1-5 for army and 6-9 production facilities. If I ever need to make scvs I just hit 0 and hit s and then 1 twice to go back to my army. The only way to get better at the game is to play more and do what feels comfortable and natural to you, learn BOs and always keep practicing and trying to improve.

I use 0 9 for overseers and observers they are good to keep on those hotkeys since you don't want to mix observer hotkeys with your army hotkeys or else you will make mistakes

9 and 0 are generally used for less necesary units or units that arent really connected to all that much out.

i use them for scouting overlords

So they rotate their hand across the keyboard to so some things and then move it back, it takes some practice, but it can help expand your hotkey usage. Also you can "kind of" attack from over there with "p" for patrol.

I dont think you would want to learn hotkeys tied to mouse buttons (for example, i had backspace as mouse 4 for a while), because in tourneys and such I don't believe that is allowed. I could be wrong though and if I am I am definitely putting backspace back to mouse 4 cause it is about 10 times easier to larva like that.

use 9 and 0 for units you don't need to attack or cast stuff with, but ones you just need to move around or double-tap so you can look at them. for example, observers, or tech buildings you plan on keeping track of research progress for. using right-control to assign these is pretty easy for me.

I got a G700 mouse the other week. With a bit of practice it solved that little problem nicely. Now its not a chore to quickly check my upgrade buildings and Observers without using hotkeys I want to use on my army.

9 and 0 were used in BW if you were mainly protoss why?

PROBE.

Basicaly, when the game start you'd put your nexus on 0 and than press "P" which was the short key. Do you see how close "P" and 9-0 are? so each time you'd make a Nexus it would just be easier for you to just press "P" from the later numbers.

But I must agree that even today with SC2 I still use 9-0 to put upgrade buildings on. Basicaly when I want to do a melee, ranged or carapace upgrade I press "0" and when I have some skill upgrades to do I press on 9 and tab to the right building!

Works well

You're not playing a FPS - Move that hand away from WASD

If your natural position is WASD on the left hand, then that's probably why you are having trouble - I played WOW, so I also had that problem.. Just get used to using the hotkeys further away, all it takes is practice
