I feel like the least stressful way to deal with this campaign on Brutal is to just use Battlecruisers...
Personally thought this mission was annoying compared to "lol-easy" Protoss missions so I went ahead and did all the Protoss missions first, got my BCs and whatnot. Started the base up with 2 Tech Lab Starports and kept pumping just BCs. Defended my base with 2 bunkers and a siege tank and that pretty much killed anything the campaign threw at me or at least stalled it till the really slow BCs got back to base to clean up the mess...
Just keep a handful of SCVs (5-6) close to ur troops but not in the battle to repair. Focus fire things that may hurt the Odin a lot (Siegetanks/banshees/marauders) and since BCs are WTFBBQOP they just steamroll this campagin np. No control really required... <_<

it was easy for me on burtal. use vikings and sci vessels. scvs to help repair after u take out seige tanks. loki is corner of 4th base. its a big bc so mass vikings helps alot base def for first 4 =2 bunkers w/ war pigs+repair them w/ scvs. for last one, i didn't defend base. i made supply depots as my base got destroyed (while ordin/vikings was destroying 5th base btw first run, i didn't up any mech besdies in game. weapon and armor ups help alot

I have a question. Does somebody even read all those comments past the third - fifth page? I mean I wanted to share my take on the mission but after I've gotten to second page I realised, that everyone basically writes the same things over and over again...
|
how to trap odin? he always walks over my structures ...
|
Nope, looks like people really don't read, they still posting shit about gosts/BC/SV/vikings/banshees/zerg+toss grades/etc.
Very few (including me lol) had the balls to make without grades or other units than wraith/tanks
P.S. You need to trap Odin INSIDE first base, not outside, so put depots on black metal.
|
Don't trap Odin,
Just make marines and medics at the maximum rate! Create secondary Command Center in the BEGINNING to pump up SCV and then expand later on. gg
EDIT: Oh yeah one more thing,,,
Make Odin solo as much as possible (help him kill the defenders but make him solo the base really slowly).
|
Cloaked banshees =) and MMM. Just go in first with the banshees and kill of any tanks, bunkers, diamond backs or marauders and let odin take care of any air units. Science vessels are also very niffty, since the brutal AI seems to hate scvs alot... A few vikings are also god when charging the third base.

that's a lie btw, if you don't help him he dies on the first base. Maybe on normal it's that way....

You only need help by killing the medivacs with wraiths at the first base. Then pull them out and let him finish in his own pace.

Tips for "cheating" through this mission, takes almost an hour. I got tired of dying at base 3/4 every time.
- block Odin inside of the first base with 4 supply depots and eventually about 8 siege tanks and 5-6 missile turrets. If you don't extend your wall-off of Odin with Siege Tanks, he will usually levitate through the buildings at some point. You will be attacked by every unit terran can throw at you, but the defense will hold if you control your repairing scvs.
- mass wraiths, destroy 2nd base. Take expansion (you'll have to sneak scvs up there). Build your command center to the right of the right-hand gas. If you build your CC in the normal position, it will probably be attacked immediately.
-mass more wraiths, call in 2 mercenary companies of Vikings to deal with Battlecruisers that attack you. You can get air upgrades too.
-When you have, say 36 wraiths or more, attack the last base (below you) and take out all the starports. The AI will rebuild missile turrets, but not starports. Cruise to victory, and stop by to say hi to Loki.

What is the exact mechanic by which you are able to wall the odin in and prevent levitation? double thich supply depots? does it require tanks? when you mention that they send a tonne of stuff at you, how much is this exactly? would massing bunkers with marines be able to hold out vs these waves?
|
place 4 supply depots in a vertical line exactly outside the first base. One layer will do if you put a siege tank outside of each one (I placed a few extra to kill never-ending waves of ground units). You could probably use planetary fortresses as well. Experiment I suppose.
The attacks basically do not stop. There is just enough time in between the waves to repair.

Science Vessels are helpful but keep in mind that only one SV repairs at a time on the Odin. You can bring SCVs as well but the AI will target fire your SCVs if they get too close to the enemy units while repairing the Odin.
If you don't have much upgrades, the easiest way is to mass wraiths. That's easier said than done though as I had to go through many saved files to get through this one on brutal and even had to redo it a few times on brutal from scratch. The hardest part, I would say, would be Odin taking on the second base. The mass marauders and marines accompanied with siege tanks and bunkers make it hard for Odin to take out.
So the key that I found for taking out the second base is to have your initial four wraiths and navigate counter-clockwise around the second base and snipe the raven at the 2 o'clock position of that base. After that, push in with your cloaked wraiths and destroy the tanks, bunkers, medivacs and retreat and Odin should have a much easier time taking out that second. The other bases should be easier if you're keeping up with wraith production and repair.
And as for the back door attacks, keep 2 medics and 2 SCVs behind your bunker(s) and have 2 siege tanks behind it to defend. If you don't have siege tanks, then you may have to bring back your wraiths to finish it.

I finally beat this in my marine only brutal NUR. I had to use this trick, but time releasing the odin to be just before the second base started contributing to the endless waves. I'll have the vids of me beating it on my youtube in the next couple days

BCs just rock this one. Once I tried BCs this level went from ultra hard to trivial.

It took me a long time to get this one on Brutal. Here are a few tips.
Basic Strategy and Build Lots of Wraiths, upgrades ASAP.
Second Base. The second base was by far the worst until I found a tip somewhere on the net. The basic problem is that anything that goes near the ramp gets shredded. Your wraiths get annihilated before they can take out all the detection, your SCVs die almost instantly, and Odin blows up. The solution is to attack the second base from the right (east) while Tychus is having a beer. Carefully kill the raven, then the two alarm towers, then start killing the ground units. By the time Odin shows up the Wraths have softened up the ramp enough that you can keep Odin alive by judiciously microing in your SCVs to keep him repaired.
After you take out the second base you may need to send the wraiths to your own base to help on defense.
Third Base Similar approach. Send in wraiths while Odin is resting, soften up the area on top of the ramp. Then be judicious with your Wraiths; let Odin do the heavy lifting and only use wraiths if he's taking exessive damage. Micro in SCVs for repair when you can.
Fourth Base Again, similar approach.
Final Base. Take all of your SCVs from your base and have them follow Odin. Use your wraiths anti-air, but mostly hang back. The final base is a pushover; you don't have to keep him alive for very long, after which he nukes the place.

I watched it today. I was impressed with your strategy, could see you put a lot of thought into it. Would be something wild to see it in one go . Do you plan on trying that for a future run?

I've thought of beating the missions once with my loads/retrys and then doing them again knowing the strat for the recording, but I don't know if my sanity could withstand that... There are always points where you just die because of not timing something right with this kinda run...

This isn't one of the harder missions in the game. Repair Odin right after the BCs 'gank' him, let him solo the first base, and send wraiths northeast, between bases 3 and 2. Kill the Raven, drop the tanks, and repair him once he finishes base 1. From then on, wraiths and viking mercs were all I used to defend him and I just stayed by him with nothing but that, aside from suicide-diving my entire static defence force (Marines+tanks+medics, SCVs on repair) to help push down bsae #5.
