So... I decided to bump this because I'm having Serious trouble with this mission on Brutal.
I got it once, but I think that was before the patch that changed the AI priority to hit the repairing SCVs,. I say this because even though this time I'm trying this without any upgrades and I'm attempting the mission before having several important units (ie: only air units I have are medivacs and ravens, and no "dominion units" whatsoever), every mission so far has been a lot easier than the first time I played the campaign, in other words, I now have better micro/macro...
I can do it OK if I use load a bunch of times, but I want to do it in one go, so I'm asking for tips here. If I can't get it I suppose I'll just do other missions and leave this one for later...
Has anyone played this mission on Brutal recently (or, not so recently but after patch 1.2.0, released in Jan 2011)? If so, what was your strategy being it is now nigh impossible to repair the Odin during battles?

EDIT: I fail at remembering the names of stages so I wrote how I play through Media Blitz instead. + Show Spoiler +I played it recently. The way I do it is to level one and a half bases with the Odin before you get to control your base, going for the base with tanks first, then moving on to the base with hellions and reapers. You don't need to destroy every last building; missile turrets are kind of irrelevant and a waste of time at that point. Instead focus on unit producing structures and command centers. Make sure you make every use of your special ability count, destroying as many hit points worth of targets per use (go for big clumps of factories and add-ons and tanks and whatnot).
Immediately upon getting control of your base, repair the Odin and then send it to destroy the expansion to the right of your base, then finish off the 2nd base that you crippled earlier. Meanwhile, your efforts should be focused in settling into the expansion your Odin just cleared, and preparing for the initial attack of the base with the air units; expect vikings, banshees and... don't remember what else. Marines and medivacs maybe?
After finishing off the 2nd Dominion base, do NOT enter the beacon that starts the event, you'll need reinforcements from your main base to do that. So just chill, macro up an army, crush the final enemy base, and go about doing the broadcast events in the 3 different bases when it's safe to do so.

To the poster above: aren't you talking about Media Blitz, as opposed to Engine of Destruction?

You can do this with pure marine/medic, but it helps to make 8 or so wraiths for the later portions of the mission. Use the wraiths to pick off tanks/spot high ground. Watch out for missile turrets.
The Odin can tank a ton of damage, so don't worry too much about it. It's sometimes helpful to send a group of units to pick off a specific enemy unit/building. Leave a few SCVs behind your attack force and repair the Odin whenever you get a chance (generally NOT in combat, unless it's an emergency).
Don't be afraid to overproduce workers. You're likely to lose your repairing taskforce a few times, and you can always use them to saturate a second base (in the north) later in the mission.
Ideally, you'd make a few viking for later parts of the mission (especially if you're killing the special BC), but it's doable without them.

Marine \ Medic will destroy this mission. But as I've said earlier, just wall the Thor in. Go on a destruction rampage and win

You can dance scvs to and away from the back of the Odin; just make sure the enemy units aren't in range to hit the scvs. When the scvs start repairing, the AI makes the enemy units run forward to try and hit the scvs, and you have to make the scvs run away, giving the Odin a couple of free shots, which usually is enough to kill any unit.
|
on Brutal, the AI has ALWAYS targeted the SCVs.

This is a super minor point, but you can steal the tech reactors from the first base's buildings if you float your buildings over and land them before Tychus destroys the add-on. I was having huge trouble with that second base and having that extra production early on really helps, especially with money so tight.
|
this mission is extremely easy. Just beat all the other missions first, so you have viking/banshee. Make a nice viking banshee ball with a few sci vessels thrown in and you will win with ridiculous ease
|
marine/medic/siege tank is really good............... Marines and medics destroy almost anything and the tanks are good at killing any threatening AOE (ie enemy tanks) Just be sure to repair the Odin and send back your army to defend after each base destroyed. Other players recommend (if you save the mission till later) to use Science vessels... I'm sure that makes the level alot easier but I didnt have that tech when I did this mission in the campaign >__>
|
I had very low tech when I got this mission, like super low, as in no siege tanks tech. Basically what I did was at the very start salvage the first bunker and use the 400 mins to throw down a second CC straight away, this lets u get a lot of SCVs out faster and sets u up to immediately saturate the next base as soon as it gets cleared out. Make huge ball of M&M and go win.

Yeah, it has a high priority on healers, but it just felt SO MUCH HARDER now, I was thinking something must be different...
I guess I'll just abort this mission and get back to it later with more units and with actual upgrades. Thanks anyways.
Anyone saying marine medic owns this stage better show some evidence of it, when I get back to this stage with upgrades I'll give it a go just to be sure, but right now the marines are just melting way too fast...

You get wraiths for a reason in this mission. Each base only has one stealth detector, which is either a raven or a missile turret. It becomes pretty easy if you only build wraiths and base defenses. You get in with your wraiths before Odin ever gets there, destroy the detector, and then destroy as many key units as possible like diamondbacks, siege tanks, battle cruisers, medivacs and marauders. After that the Odin can mop up the base on it's own, so you can retreat your wraiths to regenerate energy in preparation for the next base. Have a couple of SCVs handy to repair Odin in between bases. There should be no need for incombat repair.

I used Banshees and Vikings for this. I saved my MULES and had like 5 SCVs repairing the Odin. It wasn't easy, but it worked.

One piece of advice for this mission: SAVE YOUR GAME A LOT.
But for the actual gameplay: don't use too many wraiths imo; their dps is pitiful, they are very expensive, and they go down pretty easily. A Marine/medic force with a lot of mercenaries worked well for me. Mercs are sick on missions with limited resources. War Pigs and Hel's Angels are SO cost effective. Marines also are better than anything else against the Loki if you attack it.
Upgrades/Researches to take advantage of in this mission if you picked them up: Micro-Filtering, Automated Refineries, Dual Fusion Repair, Marine/medic upgrades, Fire Suppression System, Orbital Command, and Phobos-Class Weapons System.
One thing that was surprisingly useful, as minor as it may be, was to stim your unit that gets targeted by the seeker missile and run it at the enemy forces (as you getattacked by rine/reaper/raven/etc pushes. There was a push at my base that could've crushed me if I didn't do this and since you cannot build much defense, this might come in handy.

I remember doing it with tank-goliath. Worked very well I had 1 walled in bunker with merc marines at home and a siege tank there. Mass repair + using whatever units popped out of my factories held all assults to my base

I remember doing this with mass cloaked ghost :3

Ghosts are damn good, so are the nukes!
First I tried with wraiths, well, because the mission kinda introduced unit so I just thought they would be good and it failed horribly (Didnt have Vessels)
Then I just tried MMM as in every goddamn map before and guess what? It worked! But since I have to be such a perfectionist and do all the objectives and whatnot achievements aswell I didnt manage to kill Loki until I made ghosts and nukes to support my poor medics and marines. :3

I just did mass wraiths... maybe I was lucky, but it worked pretty well^^
