Lets discuss the single player 'challenge missions' here.
Since I'll assume we're all good enough to accomplish the first and second degree achievements without any trouble, lets just discuss the 'gold' achievements.
The degrees of achievements took me back for a second. Bronze, silver, gold? Are they correlating that to division levels? The answer is no, and I think it's misleading, Perhaps they should be renamed.
The gold achievements are essentially the elite level achievements.
There are even gold achievements to be earned in the 'basic' challenges. They're a little easier to get than the gold achievements in the later challenge missions, but they still took me a couple of fine-tunings.
So far, I'd say getting the gold achievement for 'Psionic Assault' (You get 11 sentries and 6 HT and are expected to kill 225 enemies in waves) was the most difficult, and I'm a Protoss player too. >.> Took me about 25 tries to complete, maybe I suck? maybe it's just really hard.

The Zerg T2 one was rather easy. You don't even need the Roaches to get gold, just burrow-move your infestors and the mc the nicely positioned AoE units.
|
psionic assault is freakin difficult. i'm close to gold but not quite there!
what was your strategy?
|
yes please do tell. I thought it was easy until I ran out of energy
|
I guess you have to conserve energy as much as possible by killing stuff with sentry attacks on earlier levels? I ran out of energy right after the silver medal marker, then a bunch of reapers hopped over the wall.
|
yeah, i didnt storm zerglings (neither groups) and generally used 1 storm for smaller packs and 2 storms for marine/marauder and reaper. make sure you storm with diff templars, and use hallucinations to tank. Once you get to the barricaded part the sentries/archons just kill everything until the ultralisk which breaks through and dies immediately, you can pretty much avoid losing a single unit if you want to
|
finally did this shit. I died right at 250 or whatever the requirement for gold. Worse thing is accidentally losing a HT cus you moved too close to the forcefield wall to storm. One of the hurdle I had to overcome was the reapers hopping up the cliff. At first I tried to use only 2 forcefields then storm where they might go but then I said fuck it and trapped them with 4 forcefields.
|
against reapers i just pulled back and laid 2 storms in a line, they all died running through both :o

It actually keeps going a ways after you get to Gold (225). I got up to 255 on my third try, but at that point the waves are just brutal. Hellion + Banshee, yuck.

As a protos user i didnt have mutch trouble with psyonic storm. The only really hard one was the protoss defend pylon mission where you had to go up vs 6 marauders and 10 tanks or something. I lost about 8 units in that battle alone. Had to repeat till the rest was perfect.
|
You got 0 units killed in all the other levels? Do tell. I lost 2 zealots on the marauder/tank section by having phoenixes lift 4 tanks, two immortal hallucinations run in first, then start target firing tanks with actual immortals, while having zealots run in, pick off marauders and run back. It'll be awesome if someone managed to get 0 units killed total, though I doubt it's possible.

Psionic assault is making me want to throw my computer across the room....grr!
I got gold everything else but I'm not even CLOSE for PA.
I'll try some of your tips.

k use hallucinations to tank (archons or immortals) while taking down the units. Never use more than 1-2 storms perferibly none. on the bottem section you can mostly FF them with 1 or 2 FF and just killl with sentries. Didnt really do anything special. Except feedbacking the banshees on 100 kills or something

Thanks for that replay it was so helpful. Anyone got one for the terran ghosts and ravens mission. The time limit on that is so harsh.

Well it was more like 7 on that one level. 2 on the first on the second

The time limit on that is so harsh. Split off a few ghosts from your main force, and nuke camps without detectors. You should be able to nuke the top left, bottom right, the bottom middle, and the centre itself without losing anything if you come through by the bottom pathway.
After that, its simply a question of carefully and quickly cutting a pathway to one of the two areas over watching the main zerg camp and launching off a nuke from there.

Did anyone else notice on the Infestation level that when you kill a lot of units at once, a little message appears over them saying "Terrible, Terrible Damage"? I smiled.
I've completed 4 of these so far and they're not too difficult. All of the unit counter ones are pretty intuitive for anyone that knows all three races. To get gold you might have to do a bit of micro to save some dying units, but just picking the right compositions should get you silver at least.
|
Hey, finished them all on gold with a nice little portrait achievement. They are all pretty easy, will just take you 1-2 tries to find the best tactics, some of them you will even get gold first try!
In all of them, whenever you get a lot of kills with one spell (nuke/storm/fungal growth) there is a caption that changes depending on the amount of units you kill. I think 6+ says 'Terrible Terrible Damage'.
Cheers

The challenges were a lot of fun. Once I started playing them I didn't really stop until getting the Spectre portrait.
IMO, the trick to psionic assault is using hallucination to tank the groups of ranged attackers. It only takes as much energy as two force fields anyway, and 1-2 hallucinated archons or immortals will tank an entire group while you storm them, as long as you stand in back when the units approach. Works great against reapers/stalkers/etc. Also don't be afraid to morph two of your HTs into archons if they get low on energy, it can help a ton.
I was disappointed at how easy all of the "expert" challenges were. The rush defense one was really easy if you've played multiplayer (especially 2v2... oh god the cheese). The protoss "micro" one required very little micro. I guess the only "trick" was to use warp prisms to bring DTs to the top, since it had no detection. You can just shift queue attack move commands for the top, right and bottom right though, and you don't even have to kill that many units. They basically give you "counters" for every unit group and put them right in front of the groups of units, so it was like a much easier version of the "basic" challenges, just with a not-very-restrictive time limit.
The terran macro challenge was a little harder since I'm not a terran player, but it only took two tries. The second time I made two bunkers instead of one and it allowed me to macro a bit harder and get the ghosts in time. I did it with 4 rax and 2 facts.
The ghost/raven one was relatively difficult, when I completed it I ended up using no seeker missles or PDDs and instead just dropping auto turrets to tank for the ghosts while they snipe/nuke everything. The "trick" I guess is to kill buildings since they don't fight back and they are worth like 7 kills. If you can make it to the middle area with all the roaches and hydras in a pit and then kill off the spore crawlers, then it's an easy win since you get around 40 kills in there with just 2 nukes.
I actually probably liked the "basic" ones since they required more precision and micro rather than just having a trick.

For Psionic Storm here's how I did it.
1st ling wave just focus them down if your sentries are in a box formation none of them will take much past shield damage.
From then until reaper wave...
2xFF 1 Storm, if everything is super low sentry kill it, else use a 2nd psi storm (you might also be able to use a hallucination + sentry focus. Sentry-Zealot takes 2x Psi storm + sentry focus.
Reapers -> 2x hallucination + Psi Storm(s) these were the worst for me and really the only wave that's going to make or break you.
Banshee's feedback.
Mutas -> make archon and use storm.
Stalkers -> a pain, I'd 2x psi storm and use a hallucination tank against this wave. If you survive this and the next reapers with enough for 3-4 storms & your sentries you've gotten the gold pretty much.
Everything @ barricade -> archon + storm usage.
Ultra -> kite.
The key is to rotate your casters. Every way grab 2 full energy sentries and 1 full energy templar. Cast 1 spell of each for that wave and grab a 2nd full energy templar if you need a 2nd storm. This way you are getting the maximum amount of energy regeneration by having all of your templars regenerating rather than 2 0 mana templars. The sentries are less important for this rotation really, but it's still a good idea.
I thought he ghost one was annoying. I just ended up using HSM on mutas, having my ghosts cloak kill their way into the middle then the top side splitting off 2 to nuke the top left and bottom left bases (use ravens to clear the way). When you get the spore colonies protecting the middle dead you can nuke that + the base on the left + anything else.
Also HSM the drone line on the top base as it's worth a lot.
I wish there were more challenges. Maybe another set of 9 played at game speed instead of slowed down. I agree the advanced ones were easy. I think I 1 shotted all of them except the protoss one (I was just playing too lazily the first time).
The basic ones are the best hands down. Especially reading other people's methods on how they did things. I did some pretty funky stuff that worked great. For example vs the 3 BCs for Protoss I used 3 carriers and a templar.
