Lets discuss the single player 'challenge missions' here.
Since I'll assume we're all good enough to accomplish the first and second degree achievements without any trouble, lets just discuss the 'gold' achievements.
The degrees of achievements took me back for a second. Bronze, silver, gold? Are they correlating that to division levels? The answer is no, and I think it's misleading, Perhaps they should be renamed.
The gold achievements are essentially the elite level achievements.
There are even gold achievements to be earned in the 'basic' challenges. They're a little easier to get than the gold achievements in the later challenge missions, but they still took me a couple of fine-tunings.
So far, I'd say getting the gold achievement for 'Psionic Assault' (You get 11 sentries and 6 HT and are expected to kill 225 enemies in waves) was the most difficult, and I'm a Protoss player too. >.> Took me about 25 tries to complete, maybe I suck? maybe it's just really hard.
|
The Zerg T2 one was rather easy. You don't even need the Roaches to get gold, just burrow-move your infestors and the mc the nicely positioned AoE units.
|
psionic assault is freakin difficult. i'm close to gold but not quite there!
what was your strategy?
|
yes please do tell. I thought it was easy until I ran out of energy
|
I guess you have to conserve energy as much as possible by killing stuff with sentry attacks on earlier levels? I ran out of energy right after the silver medal marker, then a bunch of reapers hopped over the wall.
|
yeah, i didnt storm zerglings (neither groups) and generally used 1 storm for smaller packs and 2 storms for marine/marauder and reaper. make sure you storm with diff templars, and use hallucinations to tank. Once you get to the barricaded part the sentries/archons just kill everything until the ultralisk which breaks through and dies immediately, you can pretty much avoid losing a single unit if you want to
|
finally did this shit. I died right at 250 or whatever the requirement for gold. Worse thing is accidentally losing a HT cus you moved too close to the forcefield wall to storm. One of the hurdle I had to overcome was the reapers hopping up the cliff. At first I tried to use only 2 forcefields then storm where they might go but then I said fuck it and trapped them with 4 forcefields.
|
against reapers i just pulled back and laid 2 storms in a line, they all died running through both :o
|
It actually keeps going a ways after you get to Gold (225). I got up to 255 on my third try, but at that point the waves are just brutal. Hellion + Banshee, yuck.
Replay of that run: http://www.filefront.com/17152852/Psionic Assault (3).SC2Replay

As a protos user i didnt have mutch trouble with psyonic storm. The only really hard one was the protoss defend pylon mission where you had to go up vs 6 marauders and 10 tanks or something. I lost about 8 units in that battle alone. Had to repeat till the rest was perfect.
|
You got 0 units killed in all the other levels? Do tell. I lost 2 zealots on the marauder/tank section by having phoenixes lift 4 tanks, two immortal hallucinations run in first, then start target firing tanks with actual immortals, while having zealots run in, pick off marauders and run back. It'll be awesome if someone managed to get 0 units killed total, though I doubt it's possible.
|
Psionic assault is making me want to throw my computer across the room....grr!
I got gold everything else but I'm not even CLOSE for PA.
I'll try some of your tips.

k use hallucinations to tank (archons or immortals) while taking down the units. Never use more than 1-2 storms perferibly none. on the bottem section you can mostly FF them with 1 or 2 FF and just killl with sentries. Didnt really do anything special. Except feedbacking the banshees on 100 kills or something

Thanks for that replay it was so helpful. Anyone got one for the terran ghosts and ravens mission. The time limit on that is so harsh.

Well it was more like 7 on that one level. 2 on the first on the second

You should be able to nuke the top left, bottom right, the bottom middle, and the centre itself without losing anything if you come through by the bottom pathway.
After that, its simply a question of carefully and quickly cutting a pathway to one of the two areas over watching the main zerg camp and launching off a nuke from there.

Did anyone else notice on the Infestation level that when you kill a lot of units at once, a little message appears over them saying "Terrible, Terrible Damage"? I smiled.
I've completed 4 of these so far and they're not too difficult. All of the unit counter ones are pretty intuitive for anyone that knows all three races. To get gold you might have to do a bit of micro to save some dying units, but just picking the right compositions should get you silver at least.
|
Hey, finished them all on gold with a nice little portrait achievement. They are all pretty easy, will just take you 1-2 tries to find the best tactics, some of them you will even get gold first try!
In all of them, whenever you get a lot of kills with one spell (nuke/storm/fungal growth) there is a caption that changes depending on the amount of units you kill. I think 6+ says 'Terrible Terrible Damage'.
Cheers
|
The challenges were a lot of fun. Once I started playing them I didn't really stop until getting the Spectre portrait.
IMO, the trick to psionic assault is using hallucination to tank the groups of ranged attackers. It only takes as much energy as two force fields anyway, and 1-2 hallucinated archons or immortals will tank an entire group while you storm them, as long as you stand in back when the units approach. Works great against reapers/stalkers/etc. Also don't be afraid to morph two of your HTs into archons if they get low on energy, it can help a ton.
I was disappointed at how easy all of the "expert" challenges were. The rush defense one was really easy if you've played multiplayer (especially 2v2... oh god the cheese). The protoss "micro" one required very little micro. I guess the only "trick" was to use warp prisms to bring DTs to the top, since it had no detection. You can just shift queue attack move commands for the top, right and bottom right though, and you don't even have to kill that many units. They basically give you "counters" for every unit group and put them right in front of the groups of units, so it was like a much easier version of the "basic" challenges, just with a not-very-restrictive time limit.
The terran macro challenge was a little harder since I'm not a terran player, but it only took two tries. The second time I made two bunkers instead of one and it allowed me to macro a bit harder and get the ghosts in time. I did it with 4 rax and 2 facts.
The ghost/raven one was relatively difficult, when I completed it I ended up using no seeker missles or PDDs and instead just dropping auto turrets to tank for the ghosts while they snipe/nuke everything. The "trick" I guess is to kill buildings since they don't fight back and they are worth like 7 kills. If you can make it to the middle area with all the roaches and hydras in a pit and then kill off the spore crawlers, then it's an easy win since you get around 40 kills in there with just 2 nukes.
I actually probably liked the "basic" ones since they required more precision and micro rather than just having a trick.
|
For Psionic Storm here's how I did it.
1st ling wave just focus them down if your sentries are in a box formation none of them will take much past shield damage.
From then until reaper wave...
2xFF 1 Storm, if everything is super low sentry kill it, else use a 2nd psi storm (you might also be able to use a hallucination + sentry focus. Sentry-Zealot takes 2x Psi storm + sentry focus.
Reapers -> 2x hallucination + Psi Storm(s) these were the worst for me and really the only wave that's going to make or break you.
Banshee's feedback.
Mutas -> make archon and use storm.
Stalkers -> a pain, I'd 2x psi storm and use a hallucination tank against this wave. If you survive this and the next reapers with enough for 3-4 storms & your sentries you've gotten the gold pretty much.
Everything @ barricade -> archon + storm usage.
Ultra -> kite.
The key is to rotate your casters. Every way grab 2 full energy sentries and 1 full energy templar. Cast 1 spell of each for that wave and grab a 2nd full energy templar if you need a 2nd storm. This way you are getting the maximum amount of energy regeneration by having all of your templars regenerating rather than 2 0 mana templars. The sentries are less important for this rotation really, but it's still a good idea.
I thought he ghost one was annoying. I just ended up using HSM on mutas, having my ghosts cloak kill their way into the middle then the top side splitting off 2 to nuke the top left and bottom left bases (use ravens to clear the way). When you get the spore colonies protecting the middle dead you can nuke that + the base on the left + anything else.
Also HSM the drone line on the top base as it's worth a lot.
I wish there were more challenges. Maybe another set of 9 played at game speed instead of slowed down. I agree the advanced ones were easy. I think I 1 shotted all of them except the protoss one (I was just playing too lazily the first time).
The basic ones are the best hands down. Especially reading other people's methods on how they did things. I did some pretty funky stuff that worked great. For example vs the 3 BCs for Protoss I used 3 carriers and a templar.
|
If anyone is doing the basic counter challenges, an easy way to get gold is to kill off your supply depot/spire/pylon if you think you have lost to many units in that wave. This way you can get 0/0/0 clears on all waves easy.
|
I'm struggling to get gold on the Zerg basic missions. Damn bugs are just too weak and squishy, but my main problem is losing too many mutas.
|
I don't follow. If you do all the waves once through you can retry the waves at the end and it's the combined lowest total that counts. So I can get 8/2/3 then click on the first wave to keep trying it until I get my total down.
With the Zerg make use of burrow and burrow move. What are you sending the mutas after? If I remember correctly I sent mutas after the void rays (lost 2-3 only with using minimal micro).
|
BTW there is even help in choosing what to send to what. Zerg was the easiest for me. Total of 5 deaths and i was even sloppy on the roach vs zealot
|
What i mean is if you are on a wave where to many units died, simply kill off your own building and it gives to the option to retry the wave from the start of that wave set. (with no penalty)
|
I managed to grab gold in everything after 1-3 tries (some of them were really close calls), Psionic Assault thing was probably hardest, though after I started to save the energy and pick off more units with just sentries in some waves it became do-able.
It seems you can save replays from challenges, but I noticed this just today and the only one in my recent folder is Psionic Assault (unless it too has rotated away by now...) Might try, unless someone else does, to replay them at some point and try to get reps of nigh perfect to decent runs.
Terran macro one was probably most boring one, while the Harbinger thing with protoss, fighting multiple fronts for kills was really fun.
|
If you have trouble with Psionic Assault, try kill the rock in the beginning. You will have a much smaller choke and reapers will only come from one way and so on.
I did it on first try when I tried this! Good luck

o.o. This was the easiest one imo. Carriers-Attack A, make zealots on every cooldown, attack a, stalkers, blink twice, attack a, micro templars, pheonixes-attack a and gravity lifting hydras.

Covert Ops replay with 200 kills: http://www.filefront.com/17155255/Covert Ops (4).SC2Replay
1 early PDD to kill the mutas at the right of start, 1 early turret to help kill the group on the left.
I sent about 2 ghosts hugging the left side and 2 up the middle to make sure one gets to the 12 o'clock. You have to nuke the muta+overseer, then you can land a nuke for 20+ kills at the main base (mine actually died and wasted a nuke).
I sent my raven group out to some random place, but you should probably send it around the side to the 12 o'clock to clean up all the drones at the top.
|
psionic assault was too easy compared to covert ops and infestation.
use only your sentries to kill zerglings, marauders, marines, hydras, zealots, sentries. save your storms for latter units. if you block the ramp correctly they can't see high ground attackers. build 2 immortal hallucinations to deal with tanks. if you don't have enough energy when the ultralisk comes, turn your templars to archons. You can kill 250 units easily with this strategy.
|
I really enjoyed these challenge missions. A great addition to the single player which allows people to transition to learn micro in a cool way. Would have liked to see a mission involving arc unit positioning to defeat a greater force.
I thought they challenge to FE --> build 30 marines / 8 tanks / 8 ghosts while being attacked by Zerg on Lost Temple was a great mission. Would have liked to see it changed to maybe medicavs instead of ghosts, been able to change the game speed as well. I hope newbies aren't thinking they should make ghosts vs. early-game zerg. Still, this was a good way to get newer players to understand macro builds. A protoss and zerg version would have helped too.
|
Challenge missions made me sad, all of them were painfully easy. The only ones i didnt beat on the first try were the terran one in tier 2 and the zerg one in tier 3.

Like he said, use only sentries early on. You only need 2 forcefields to block the ramp. I always keep them by the edge of the cliff unless I see reapers or air units, and with forcefields they are turkey shoot.
I got gold the first play through, I even accidently created an archon while trying to create the fake one with sentry (it uses same hotkey).
Edit: Although all of the challenges seems easy, I really enjoyed the tier 3 ones. I reckon they are good multiplayer introduction for beginners. That zergling rush one is pretty neat, it even simulate zerg reinforcing the rush with 2 or 4 zerglings at a time, but the interval seems kinda wide. They got the idea tho.

Finished them all in about 2-3 hours. 1 shotted most of them, but took about 7ish tries for the protoss templar/sentry one.

Has anyone figured out a way to make the missions (like rush defense) NOT normal speed? It's nearly unplayable to me having to wait so long for SCVs to pop because I can't put it on fastest. =\

I haven't tested myself, but I heard on some challenge/custom things where speed is unchangable, using the key command (ctrl + [-/+] or something like that) works.
More importantly, huge thanks to everyone posting replays on how to accomplish some of the trickier tasks. I really liked the challenges pack, they're all pretty interesting I think (save for the rush defense). I doubt we can expect to see any more from blizzard, but hope never hurts.

Is there any way to change the normal gamespeed to faster like it should be? Having trouble with patience playin it on normal. Looked everywhere I could think of!

Covert Ops is the only one keeping me from my Spectre icon, it's so much more planning based and not micro like most of the other challenges, and that's clearly not my strongpoint.
The one with the infestors seems so out of place, most of the other challenges at least require some proficiency at the game to 1 shot, but that just requires you knowing that siege mode tanks are badass and rape shit.

The 2 key points I found was all the Spine Crawlers and the mineral lines. That alone should give you almost it Hope that helps

This one was difficult when I started by planning out where to place my nukes- but easy when I went for a faster tactic.
- Send 1 Ghost to the right- his goal is to nuke in about 3 places without getting to the point where there are overseers. - Send the rest of your army to the left- the key is to spam turrets and keep pushing fast. Dont spam nukes on this side- wait for where you really need them.
With this retarded simple tactic I was able to easily beat it without even getting to the mass spine crawler line.

I think the idea is that it is slow so you focus on the build order. Its annoying as hell, and its counter-productive imo- but makes it easy as hell to get gold.

If their are new ones in HotS and LotV I hope they are harder. All of them were painfully easy. Covert ops was the only slightly challenging one

The average SC player is not at the average TL member skill level If anything there should be more- it seems like each map took only a few hours to put together and maybe a few more hours to test and balance-- Custom mappers should be able to pump these out quick, so why do we only get 9?

I'm having the hardest time with round 3 of the Protoss assault one. The group of marauders and tanks sucks balls.

Did anyone else hate the Terran expert challenge as much as I did going for the gold medal?
First of all, because the game was fixed on "normal" speed, everything built soooo sloowwwly that it was just painful to watch.
Second, because on my first try I was 2 ghosts away from gold. I raged. On my second try, I was 1 ghost away. More rage. On my third try, 2 of my rines died to mutas and carelessness, and since every marine counted in that mission, I felt a surge of depression. Then, as my last ghost was just barely finishing its production, I passed the 4 minute mark. Oh, the rage!!!! I did get it on the fourth try, though.
Third, because the build order demanded 30 marines, 8 tanks, and 8 ghosts. I think Blizzard was seriously trying to troll here. What build order includes 8 ghosts? Why couldn't it have been some reasonable standard build of MMM or mech? Why 8 ghosts? (And ironically not even a single nuke).
I have a feeling that there are players in the Bronze league right now that are using that ridiculous build order from Blizzard, the great creator of the game and therefore the expert on it, and are wondering why their 8 ghost timing push isn't putting them in a higher league.

No. I opened up the Opening Gambit map in the editor and the game speed is locked to normal in one of triggers, I guess Blizzard only intended challenges to be played at normal speed.
|
So, is there really no way to speed up the challenges to Faster speed. I tried to play the one where you're supposed to macro up an army as terran but just got soooo bored cause everythings like crawling along at a painfully slow pace.

Ghost because of the Gas cost. You can't make them in time if you don't take your natural quickly enough.

psionic assault was the most difficult, but even so i got gold on the second try. they should deffinately set the game speed at faster, not normal, for the challenges. all the first and third tier challenges were ridiculously easy. in total only 2 of the 9 challenges took more than one try to get the gold at.

I just auto attacked with my immortals and then charged in with zealots after the shields went down. Moved my zealot/immortals back that were getting attacked, I was surprised that I didn't lose any units either since I was in a rush and just 1a'd and barely micro'd

i dunno if somebody said that yet, but the key to psionic assault is to FF down the ramp so the attackers dont have vision, and use archon hallucinations to tank stuff like reapers. Once i realized that forcefilding part it was soooo easy.

Ya- see the BO I posted above- the basics are a FE using the first orbital spell as a supply drop- gets your FE out real quick.
As for Psionic Assault- The key to getting gold is not over using storm. use ZERO storm on ling rushes, just forcefield wall. For rines and ranged used a FF to funnel troops so 1 storm will take them to 5 life. Manage storms = easy win.

Got gold on all 9. They were surprisingly easy. The one that was hardest was Psionic Assault (took me 3 tries). All you have to do there is make sure that whenever you can use Sentries to kill stuff behind Forcefields, do it. This will save a lot of Psi Storms for later use on ranged units.

Its pretty Easy, start with a depot then rax. Upgrade to orbital. Get another depot early for the first rush of 6 lings. Repair the wall until the first rine is out. Supply drop with your first 50 energy and get a second CC in your base. Only after that is started should you get gas and start your macro. When the CC was done I used 2 rax at the choke to make a partial wall- 1 with reactor 1 with tech lab. I macrod up easily with 1 rax pumping Ghosts, 1 reactored rax pumping rines, 1 reg rax pumping rines and 2 fac pumping tanks. Just dump the units on top of the cliff and you dont even have to do anything to defend. Key is just the first 2 minutes and getting the CC fast. Got gold on the first try with ease and time to spare.

Psionic Assault was probably the hardest of the 9 golds to get. It's pretty easy though if you follow a few simple rules.
1. Save often after pro waves. 2. Use Halucinations to tank for you always. 3. Hotkey 2 HT and use their energy first, make them archon when they are out and hotkey 2 new HT. 4. Save energy to feedback 1 shot the 2 banshees. 5. Storm and gaurdian shield big marine/reaper waves.
|
The challenges are actually all very, very easy to get gold on. :/
The only one that gave me trouble was the sentries and templar micro war battle to get what was it, 225 kills? Yeah. Using your energy wisely is a bitch.
|
i did it evenforgetting to feedback ghosts so it isnt all that hard .. when a sentry has cast sumth put it in the back again and use the ones in front to cast next time
also save before hydra waves & reload if u lose any sentry
|
i had really luck with the psonic thing, i forgot the hotkey for feedback and the banshees killed all of my sentries but i managed to do it by morphing all my templars to archon, not recommeded
Edit: the challenges was a lot easier then i expected

Cause if you did you would have very few encounters that you have to actually tank, most opponents wont have vision of your sentries if u ff bottom.

I'm really having a trouble with Macro Terran Challenge mission. I always lack 2 Ghosts for gold. Any tips? I went for a 2 rax (+fact) build: one with tech lab and one that gets a reactor after i've taken my natural. I take my natural at about the second or third wave of units.
The tech lab rax pretty much builds ghosts continuously. Get a second factory and third baracks later when needed. (might be able to get only 1 factory if you start it early enough) Pay attention to how many ghost/tank you still need and prioritize (in case you're lacking in min/gas)
I finished at 4:46 I think and I'm a horrible macroer.
|
For the terran macro one I did a 10 depot, 12 rax and 14 command. Make the choke at the neck of your natural.

Just golded all of the challenges. good times! now enjoying my spectre portrait.

for psionic assault i had to try a lot but i eventually figured out i could mitigate all damage from a lot of the waves with 2 forcefields at the bottom of the ramp, then storm them once and finish them off with the sentries - if the forcefields are in the right place you have high ground advantage. just don't A move the templar in with the sentries cos they'll come down the ramp and get shot at.
the zergling only waves just need a single storm and the sentries will finish them off before they do any hull damage.
i forcefield the choke on the bottom right flank instead of the ramp in the case of the zealot/sentry wave. took me 2 storms too but it was worth it cos the zealots will rape you if they make it up the ramp. actually now that i think about it the ramp might work too, but it's still probably safer to get them earlier.
banshees with feedback, easiest wave in the whole challenge.
for the reaper/ghost wave i backed up a bit from the ledge, planted a storm where they were headed and used a guardian shield. feedbacked the ghosts. that one was a little awkward. you might wanna use a couple hallucinations cos it's hectic.
had the hardest time with the viking/bio ball wave. eventually i used a couple hallucinated archons to bait the vikings, used guardian shield, attacked with storm and sentries, then stormed the hell out of the bio ball.
after that i just spammed storm cos i was really close to the 225 kills and i didn't really have to save energy anymore.
oh and the mutalisk one was a huge pain cos my storms weren't even damaging them for some reason. wasted like 4 or 5 storms there.
i actually had a much harder time with 'opening gambit' cos my base management skills suck and i also never play terran in multiplayer so it was even harder. took me like 20-30 tries and watching a friend's replay to get it. those were the two hardest though by far. rest just took some tinkering around.

This took far too long but:

Most of them are actually quite easy with basic micro since the AI is really bad. The Marine vs Mutalisks one was easily the hardest but I found it was best to get the Medivacs to tank some damage rather than try to heal.

Wow, very nice! What do your notes mean when you say to exchange HTs?
And I believe its wave 20 that gets you gold.
|
I believe he selects a few HTs to storm for a few rounds, and when they're mid/low on energy he exchanges them for other HTs. (to give as many HTs energy regeneration as possible)
|
For the terran rush mission i actually send all but 2 of my scv to kill one of the 2 first gates outside of their cannon range. Since you start with a crapton of minerals i just had to kite 1 zealot for a few seconds instead of 2
|
Just got my challenges done and thought i'd help out with some of the missions. + Show Spoiler +
I lost the replays from Cov Ops & Psionic Storm so i cant use screenies from the actual challenge.
Covert Ops Got 180 kills or something with this mission by the end, not sure exactly when the count rose alot but i had to try several times and this was the best way i found to do it.
Before pressing ready i grouped all ghosts except for 2 together, ravens together, and then 1 ctrl group for 1 ghost and a 2nd one for the last. As soon as i started i cloaked both the separate ghosts & nuked the sides. (Note that with the bottom one there are also 6 zerglings that you can choose to snipe [at the risk of losing too much energy i'd snipe maybe 4 of them before going back to the main group]). + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +
While the nukes at the sides were going off i took out the spine crawler down the middle (4 snipes kills a roach). 2 raven turrents are enough to tank the damage that the spine crawlers do before the ghosts can kill it. Nuke the group of roaches & hydras on the lower ground while the other ghosts kill the 2 spore crawlers & the ultralisk cavern (though optional i believe the hatchlings from dead buildings count as 1 kill each). + Show Spoiler +
Move up to the left side towards the baneling's nest & pick off the mutas (2 snipes and a shot kills mutas i believe). Toss a nuke near the infestation pit. + Show Spoiler +
Kill the baneling's nest, kill the spine crawler (again with 2-3 turrets and ghosts). Send 1 ghost cloaked down the ramp to nuke on the hatchery for some drone kills. NOTE: there are 2 patrolling overseers that have to be killed before you nuke the hatch, the cloaked ghost also has to be careful of the spine crawler in front of the hatch + Show Spoiler +
Next to nuke is the spine crawlers (somehow this always draws some units out for a few extra kills). At this point you may want to also throw down any nukes you have remaining and send your ravens past the spine crawlers to spam hunter seeker's on the drones. + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +
Psionic Assault As others have mentioned this challenge becomes alot easier when you use ff to keep units on the low ground. When i did this i actually did not use hallucinate at all as i find FFs to be more helpful. On reaper levels that spawn from the right i used 2 storms as they approached, 1 from the low ground and 1 at the top to catch them as they came up. Ghosts and banshees can be feedbacked. + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +
Infestation Alot easier than the others just split your infestors, use NP on the cols & HTs then storm/kill stuff.
Rush defense Not necessarily a hard one but i have found some interesting things about the toss part of this challenge. The Z one i just used little gaps to minimize the amount of lings that can attack my rines. + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +
As for the protoss part i noticed if you stand a scv where the 2nd gate is supposed to go down the AI forgets about building the gateway until the scv has moved (most likely when the first zealot spawns). The rest of it is just surviving til your first reaper than the rest is easy because the toss only builds zealots. + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +

Interesting. No one seems to have mentioned the way I've used for Psionic Assault...
First wave: Forcefield and storm while using the rest of your sentries to kill the destructable rocks.
Camp up there, forcefield the ramp endlessly until you hit a reaper wave. Throw down 2 more forcefields on the northern cliff to keep them from jumping up and storm twice.
Keep it up until they start to spawn behind you. The first wave is lings and can be taken down by 2 storms and slightly kiting... Probably 1 storm actually.
Go back down the ramp, morph into 2-3 archons depending on if you've had a few sniped or not. Kill the roaches and ultra directly, then back up the ramp to kill the banelings with your sentries and then charge the tanks with your archons. And that's it. Gold.
You won't go further with this strategy though But yes it makes gold.
One tip though: After you hit your forcefield for the ramp, make sure you put hold-stand on your guys again. Seems as soon as they cast, they go back to normal movement and go down the ramp to attack, get kicked and die.

I went back and replayed the psionic assault challenge, and got to a battle cruiser wave. Has anyone gotten past this?
|
Yay, gold on all, was hoping to get some sort of hidden achievement when i managed to get all of the basics without losing a single unit, but alas nothing happened Guessing there are no hidden achievements for doing way above gold level performance then.
|
Ugh. This one made me angry... the first time I did it, I managed only about 6 tries. I went back to record it to put it up on Into Starcraft's youtube channel (up soon, sorry about the shameless plug), and sat in front of the computer for what seemed like an eternity.
I hate those reapers. One missed ff spells doom. I barely made it.
My record's only 241. Lame
The rest will be uploaded on gold as well. Infestation was most definitely my favorite.

Psionic assault seems to stop at 298. # 296, 297, 298 are a battlecruiser, a colossus, and an ultralisk, repsectively. The BC wiped me so I couldn't go further.
Maybe it goes to 300? Carrier for 299 and mothership for 300? lulz if so.
|
299 is a thor 300 is a mothership.
Beat it without losing a single sentry/ht

invulnerability cheat more?

Thanks. Umm I can't find your BO.
Wow, I did it totally differently - went depot(9), rax(11), depot asap to make the wall and pumped marines as soon as the rax finishes - orbital as soon as rax finishes. This gives two marines by the time the lings come - repair wall and then have an scv ready to go build the CC in place while another builds a bunker to start to wall off the choke. First gas around now to save up for factory - finished the wall with a second bunker and three depots as time allows - reactored the first rax after the second bunker filled. Orbital asap on the second CC - all energy to mules. Mass gas around now and then macro all the way home.
It's a bit faster, I think, to start the CC in place right after the first ling rush rather than in the base and float over. Either way, it's not too hard whichever way one does it - lots of options, it shouldn't be too bad. I finished with two tech lab barracks pumping ghosts, reactor rax pumping rines, and two fac pumping tanks. I think I probably got gas and macro running a bit later than you, so needed two rax for ghosts, but there's enough time to play with that a lot of BOs probably work.

I scored 226/225 on the first try for the one you mentioned, but I think most of the Zerg challenges took me multiple attempts. Seems like the first three micro challenges were actually the most challenging out of the nine.

they need to make a guide in the liquidpedia section

im apparently really bad at macro, cos the only challenge i found really hard was the macro one. took me like 20 tries and in the end i finished with 8 seconds to spare :/

I've been working on improving my Opening Gambit time - got from 6:06 to 6:15 to 6:22 today. On 6:22 I lost a couple marines carelessly but thankfully didn't affect my time by more than a few seconds.
Not quite sure if 6:30 is possible, but then again my build does still have its imperfections

Psionic Assault was the best/most fun one for me. After I got Gold, I went back and got 300, where it ends. Some tips that I haven't seen mentioned yet (and a few that bear repeating):
1. You only need two forcefields to hold waves from the north (bottom of ramp). You technically need two FF for waves that come from the south (the choke point before the ramps), but you can get away with 1 for the very first wave (kill all the zealots before they get through) and 1 for the tank wave (too big to get through that hole). You only need one for the one wave that comes through the rocks once they go down (that roach/hydra wave).
2. Switch HT after every single storm, sentries I switched after every 2 FF or 1 hallucination. Sentry micro wasn't so important, since FF is so cheap. I didn't have any problems with sentry energy.
3. The protoss waves that come from the S are the most annoying in the whole challenge, you'll need 2 storms at least, 3 minimum when the immortals come.
4. Don't feedback the ghosts. You need to storm the marauders or hydras (depending on the wave) anyway, ghosts die to the storm before the marauders do, it's just a waste of energy.
5. Split your sentries up on both sides of the destructible rocks for the ultralisk--he'll dance around not knowing which side to stand on before attacking the rocks, giving you ample time to DPS. One storm is enough. Rocks should be at yellow or early red when he dies.
6. Dance with the roaches behind the rocks, sentries outrange them. Don't dance with the hydras. You will lose. Bring them down into a clump with a first storm; then when the rocks go down, FF quickly and then storm a couple more times.
7. The viking + MM wave is also pretty annoying. You need two hallucinated archons to take their fire while you storm--probably at least 3 times. Pull back instead of FF and sitting on the high ground, since they'll have vision from the vikings, choke/FF/high ground useless.
8. Battlecruiser gets 3 hallucinated archons tanking, one feedback, one storm, sentries DPSing
9. Mutas also get hallucinated archons tanking while storm/sentries DPS. I imagine guardian shield would be good here, but I didn't bother.
10. The wave with just 2 tanks you need 1 forcefield and nothing else, sentries kill it from the high ground before the next wave.
11. Last ultralisk wave my sentries all died, so I stormed twice and then morphed into archons. Turns out 3 archons (with micro) beats 1 ultralisk, then 1 thor, then 1 mothership (after a bit of kiting to frantically regen some shields). I might do this again just to feedback that motherflipping mothership.
12. Finally, note that the better you do in earlier rounds, the easier you have it later rounds--more units alive = more energy regen/second = more storms before you have to morph into archons.

For those doing the opening gambit, you really just have to 1rax Fast Expand and go from there. Make sure you get that gas early. I ended up doing the marines last because of all the extra minerals.

Dim2 how did u deal with the muta wave if u got marines last?

the only challenge mission i had trouble with was psionic assault

The key for me was discovering you could save along the challenge and load every time to get best results.
The basic levels you can beat with different combination of units, but you can easily get gold by following the tips the game gives you. Sometimes the tip sounds absurd like "Use your carriers against Thors", but it works perfectly.
The intermediate challenge is by far the hardest because of psionic assault. You just gotta save the game a lot, try to beat early levels without casting sentry spells much. Lings - No spells at all Marines - Storm Marines Marauders - Storm Hydra Lings - Storm Lings, Roach, Baneling - I think I used storm + 1 Force Field, not too sure.
When the units spawn in the other side, you can cast force fields below (not ramp, but cliff), and kill units from above.
Try to spend quickly the energy of two templars and morph them.
Most levels are actually easy after a few tries.

On August 29 2010 04:08 DARKHYDRA wrote: Dim2 how did u deal with the muta wave if u got marines last?
Ofcourse he got the marines at start, but all you need is 4 marines and 2 bunkers for pretty much all the waves... So he makes 20ish marines when ghosts are done. I think I did one fac, a techlab rax, two reactor ones, and I had almost 2 mins to spare.

Gold for all challenges was pretty easy IMO, but still lots of fun. Psionic Assault was by far the best challenge, despite how easy it was. I got to about 200 kills before losing my first sentry. The spellcaster multitasking and decision-making was really fun though
