I remember 5-6 years ago getting all excited about the Belgium golden generation. But only to be frustrated with Martinez struggling at the helm. Now, I'm actually quite excited of Portugal's new generation of stars (Felix, Leao, Ramos, etc). And now Martinez is in charge as well... *facepalm*

- Belgium did finish 3rd in WC2018, beating Brazil and Engerland (twice!), losing to winners France. In Euro 2020 they beat us and lost to winners Italy; - Belgium's team was way past it by 2022 and the newer generation is worse than the Bruynes, the Hazards and the Kompanys; - Portugal doesn't have a golden generation right now - it has a constant flux of great players from world class academies in Porto, Benfica and Sporting (the latter being a notch below the other two right now imo). So it's not a "now or never" situation. We can see how he does in the Euros and change course for the next WC if needed.

His substitutions in 2018 and 2020 were weird and while Belgium did well, they didn't appear to be utilising their star players maximally. Maybe they were tired after long seasons of club football, or maybe there was something that didn't jive between them, but while Belgium did okay, it felt they could've done better. That said, maybe our feelings are wrong.

Although i cant pronounce his name it looks like Benfica is closing on him for 10+6M for 80%. Is he good? Now it seems you're also buying Casper Tengstedt from Rosenborg, for a similar sum. This guy I saw plenty of. In 14 games he scored 15 goals and had 7 assists, and few of the goals were easy, several were real beauties. Basically in more than 30 years of following Rosenborg, he's the most dominant attacking player we've had. Pure class. However, not a given that he'll succeed. His main strength is exceptional composure and finishing, when given enough time and space. In the Norwegian league, he got just that. In Portugal, and especially in Europe, he might end up being a tiny bit too slow. Might be that he's a smashing success - for us he was an absolute revelation and the best signing we've ever made (his price seems to have more than 10-doubled in 14 games), but even then, I think he'll need some time to adjust to the higher pace. Anyway, seems like you basically bought the best player from the Danish league - a Norwegian youngster, and the best from the Norwegian league, a Danish one.

Since our previous President got "removed" due to legal reasons, and Rui Costa took over, things seem to be getting different. Although I don't like Rui Costa that much, since he was like the number two for Luis Filipe Vieira, he's clearly trying to move away from the modus operandi of the previous direction. A big percentage of our transfers ended up in the pocket of people that had no business being there. The thing that i'm liking the most is that we are getting away from Jorge Mendes. This two transfers we got from the scandinavian leagues were made, in theory, without any intermediation and without putting money on agent's pockets. Since we got Roger Schmidt it seems that we are also trying the scandinavian market. With these two transfer the count of scandinavian players goes up to 4 this season only. We already got Alexander Bah and Fredrik Aursnes. Aursnes is probably one of my favorite players of the team right now alongside Rafa, Enzo and António Silva. Let's see how this goes, and if we can be the Champions League Dark horse this season. EDIT: And in other news, what Chelsea did with Enzo was really messed up. They talked directly to him and his agent and said they would pay the release clause. The player got full of himself, and being ill advised, went to argentina for the new year and missed training. And after all that Chelsea "only" offered 85M + Zyiech (According to the rumors). I don't know if Benfica will report this behavious to FIFA/UEFA, but we should.

It's basically the same story for all our current top players and top players from the past two decades. John Carew going to Valencia was probably the last guy who went straight from a Norwegian club to a top European club who wasn't somewhat of a failure. (I did defend Ødegaard's decision in the past, but that's because he was so young and he basically went to RM's B team followed by going to Netherlands and then having a reasonable progression from that point.)

At least we're closing Mudryk and hopefully we get a new midfielder too How certain you are in case of Mudryk? Lots of rumors and related news for the last couple of months and still nothing. In Ukraine we tend to say that he's stuck in the golden cage and Shakhtar is trying to get as much money as possible from this transfer. Mudryk is very talented, motivation won't be a problem, but he needs a strong coach in order to keep progressing. Arteta might be the one who knows how to polish young diamonds

Things are improving under him now? He was the theoretical number 2 behind Luis Filipe Vieira, but I think he worked more as just smoke and mirrors (because he s kinda of a Benfica legend for most of the supporters, although he didn't play here that much). He maintained a big part of the directorial team that worked under Vieira, so I'm not fully convinced that things changed that much but at least we can see a shift in the club politics, that are much more football centric vs money centric. Which is smart because if we play good football we will also increase the value of the players. Let's see... I'm not sure we are off the hook just yet, but things seem to be improving.
