What's probably really hurt him is that he can't win a Ballon d'Or with Bayern even if Messi and Ronaldo play shit seasons. From what's been reported, the man's got a massive ego problem. Even though he's broken records nobody thought would ever be broken, most Bayern fans want him gone now, would have agreed to sell him already with the reported Barca offers. Because the feeling they get from this whole situation is that in 8 years in Munich, he never grew any attachment to the club.

He’s won everything there is to win and fancied a change of scene, left with the club’s blessing, the fans didn’t largely begrudge and Liverpool got a not inconsiderable but reasonable fee. It's how it should be but considering the massive ego's and self interest of both clubs and players I'm not surprised that we have so many transfer drama's instead.

Dortmund was an underdog just hitting their stride, trying to establish themselves as European powerhouse. They had won a Bundesliga, but UCL was painstakingly close and they would be trying to push for it again with the same core. This could be the the best shot they'll have in many decades with the talented lineup they have. Damn sure they'll try to hold on to their young star players and especially not hand them over to their toughest rival. Meanwhile now it's Bayern. They're almost always hitting the UCL round of 8, they're dominating the league. Lewandowski has been their reliable star player for 8 years and is approaching the final years of his professional career. He's been talking about some possibility of transfer for a few seasons now. He's also helped Bayern win everything possible in the world of football. There's nothing left to do but to repeat the same success at best. Blocking a transfer is not how you reward a loyal servant on his final years. Behind the scenes there could be all kinds of things going on, but in public there often seems to be a pretty clear cut difference between what's considered acceptable transfer request and what's letting the team down. For example Liverpool fanbase still has some bad blood between them and Sterling whereas Mane transfer was generally taken really well and people expressed plenty of gratitude towards him despite him wanting to go. --- And to be clear, I don't think this Lewandowski saga is going to flip a switch and make Bayern some kind of team nobody wants to go. Things change slowly and the next transfer storyline could spin the club image the other way round again. But Bayern has presented themselves as a bit of stubborn bully this window and it can creep its way into bigger and smaller things in the longer run. Maybe some of their current roster is going to think twice before accepting a longer extension or maybe they'll want a bit more cash to compensate the risk that they'll get the stuck the similar way as Lewa did. I also do think Lewa could act way more professionally and so on, but I don't think that matters too much here. As long as he doesn't completely come off as a irresponsible maniac during this, he'll have quite a bit of sympathy because of his current stature and public image and all that. No club wants to have a public feud with their star player of 8 years, it's just not the type of battle where the club is going to look like a proper winner vast majority of the time. I think Bayern are delusional enough to think they are bigger than everything and everyone.

I think both sides made PR mistakes and could have resolved it better, on one hand you have a "selfish greedy" player who won Bayern everything and on the other you have that egomaniac club that treats one of their best players of modern times wrongly.

luxury signing yada yada, had pressing needs elsewhere but as long as the wages aren't absurd i'm not too upset.

Barca should up the offer for Lewa by another 10 mil in extras over the next two seasons and be done with it. Pretty sure Bayern would accept. They just want their moneys worth and don't want any handouts given for Lewas agent

Just memory at work from the ungodly amount of podcasts I listen to. I don’t believe Salihamidzic is particularly popular internally because of an approach that seems a bit haphazard from the outside looking in. Lewa wants to go, with the huge wages that he commands, others want to finish their career with Bayern but they’re playing hardball with both sets. Football can be a ruthless business of sporting ambition, or it can be a place where loyalty is fostered and rewarded. Sometimes it feels players get all the flak for acting in their own interests and desires.

They just want their moneys worth and don't want any handouts given for Lewas agent It's a shame that because i think he would be open to that move. He wants champions league goals to secure the records there, he has that chance at Bayern. He also wants to win and Bayern have a great chance to do that domestically as well. Plus with Bayern and getting Mane in, they will have a lot of "legs" around him. Add in Lewa wants to leave, getting Ronaldo in as a "stop gap" on a 12month deal while you scout out for the next striker makes perfect sense to me. However, if Bayern don't want to break a wage structure for him then i can understand that, but for me there is A LOT more pluses than that only negative for that deal, as it mainly it gives you 12 months to replace Lewandowski who clearly wants to go.

If there aren’t compromises there it’s more hassle than it’s worth, if there are he could make a good stopgap

I like this quite a bit. It makes sense footballing wise and I'm not sure if a short contract even breaks the wage structure that much. You can probably at least try to argue that Ronaldo's case is unique enough and doesn't really set a club wide standard. Of course if it can be used as a leverage, then you'll end up feeling the effects way longer than just the Ronaldo contract, so maybe it's still better safe than sorry on that aspect... If they really need a hasty stop-gap solution here, it definitely doesn't seem like a bad one. CR7 gets to leave Utd and gets a solid shot at one more UCL run, Bayern gets at least 12 months to fix the striker issue and even United will be compensated quite nicely probably. CR7 also could be a league winner in 4 biggest leagues in Europe.
