Is there any top centre back around who would instantly improve the defense like van Dijk did around (and is not at a top5/top10 club in Europe)? The only one who comes into my mind would be koulibaly from Napoli.

Tough to say how he'd fare in a top5 club.

He's solid, and they look on track to win the Serie A for the bajillionth time in a row, but maybe because their defense was pretty good to begin with it's hard to be someone who can instantly improve a team's defense. Sergio Ramos is obviously a centre back who would instantly improve most teams' defenses, but seeing as he has played with Madrid for forever, one doesn't really think of him as someone who transforms the defense. He simply *is* the defense for Madrid (and the asshole who scores a header from a corner in the 93rd minute in *every important match* as well).

I think it’s pretty rare to have a defender who can instantly have an impact/isn’t already at a top club. Coordination with teammates and those verbal/leadership qualities are such a factor of the position. Which tends to take some time to mesh, if anything it makes Virgil’s impact at Liverpool even more impressive. There probably are tons of defenders who would potentially be great at a top club who never get to show what they’ve got, because they’re not surrounded by quality and never get to look as good as they could be. By want of a bad analogy, if a defender is a drummer or a bass player, a classy attacking midfielder is a lead guitarist or vocalist. It’s much easier to notice a great lead guitarist or singer in a bad band than it is to pick out the diamond in the rough drummer.

To say the game did not change on the fact they got a freekick that was not a frekick which they scored from is absurd. I know i am going back Chelsea to the hilt and whatever you want to say, but to say having a goal conceded in a game where you scored 3 goals in would not have changed the outcome is ridiculous. Regardless of that we somehow still have a chance to get in the Champions League, a huge chance that being said too.

Again, you cherrypicking one single situation that didn't go Chelsea's way does not sum up the game. It's the same as saying: "Well Keita's goal changed the game completely, if player X had tackled him better the game would have looked completely different. So he cost us the game". Of course that freekick changed the dynamic of the game, just like hundreds of other situations and decisions did. It's pure bias and you know it as well I'm sure.

So back to defenders: I guess I was too strict but then lets talk about potential who could become/is a world class defender? I used to think de ligt too but hes still young and will learn to deal with pressure. Upamancano from leipzig is one famous one who keeps getting mentioned but i dont think he has it to reach that final step. Ruben dias is certainly interesting but is there no one in the range of 25-27 years old with world class potential? Is van dijk the only one of his generation?

Chelsea players kept pushing and shoving Mané and Salah around/to the ground without the ref calling fouls for 35 minutes. Mané was just sick of it so he overacted the part, doesn't change the fact that Kovacic hit him. https://twitter.com/i/status/1286032101234675718 Again, you cherrypicking one single situation that didn't go Chelsea's way does not sum up the game. I am not cherry picking, football turns on a single moment that can change the entire outcome of a game, or why would anyone "cherry pick" when someone is sent off, or a penalty is given/not given....it is the same. Just the same way in 2012 when England scored a legit goal to make it 2-2 in the Germany vs England game and it was not given...it CHANGED the outcome of the game....The outcome of the game was changed because of that freekick I have no qualms with any other of their goals they scored, i was dismayed how they managed another worldy vs us when they are playing poorly which seems our luck vs them, i was also annoyed at our defending for their 3rd goal, but offensively we caused them huge problems in a game that i never saw us scoring 3 in. Alas now we move onto the final game and then somehow a trip to the Allianz again where we hope for another penalty shootout!

They have got to be there, as to who they are I would earn good money as a scout if I did! Virgil himself was only considered world class when he moved clubs, he individually isn’t a huge deal better than when at Southampton. I wonder if defenders are just as good as ever, but tactical trends have made it incredibly difficult to stand out as a ‘world class defender’. Defensive lines are higher up now in general. Coaches want players who are good on the ball too. You also have to be good in the air. The line being up is a big deal because you either need to be quick or at least have decent pace, or have great reading of the game to compensate. Or have a defensive partner who can compensate for your weaknesses. Makes the job a whole lot tougher for sure.

Well, exactly, de Ligt came to a team with an excellent defense as a 20 year old (or something, who gives a shit), pretty sure the most reasonable expectation was that he could learn a lot from his experienced peers to unlock his potential. It's the same for players like Upamecano or Konate - they are both 21.

Lets hope Yanited go 3-0 up in 15 minutes against Lesta sunday. Also the new premier league schedule has been confirmed with a start date of 12th September and end date of 23rd May.
