Admittedly I saw the game on and off, Athletico looked to be pretty even to me. Second half I missed most of, so I cant really say how the game went.

I expect to see him rather often in play, but IDK if that is a good thing... When I think about it, Mourinho loves him... Maybe he will even be in the starting 11 (god forbid).

Also nice to see Berbatov getting to play some football again, after wasting away on the United bench. The man's to good to just sit and watch.

As the Guardian put it: Lass "Lassana Diarra" has left Real Madrid to fulfill his childhood dream of playing for Anzhi Makhachkala

Lloris, 25, has signed a four-year deal after joining from Lyon for a fee that could reach £11.8m. Lloris is like what, 5th best keeper in the world? £12m? Come on.

Lloris is one of the best in the world no doubt, but not top 5 (I would say top 10 definitely). IMO top 5 would be Casillas, Neuer, Buffon, Hart, Cech. €15m (£12m) doesn't seem too bad of a deal for him really. GKs don't go for as much as other positions since you only really need 1 starting, 1 backup, and 1 backup for that backup. According to wiki, the most expensive GK of all time is Buffon who transferred from Parma to Juventus for €54.2m (£33m). Second most expensive is Neuer who cost Bayern €24m (£19m) just last summer. Third is De Gea to United for €22m (£18m) also last summer. Lloris going for €15m (£12m) will make him the 5th most expensive keeper of all time.

The demand for them is just so low in comparison to other positions mainly because 1 decent GK is all you really need to have the position covered... Edit: It's even more sad in international competition where plenty of good keepers get overshadowed by superior teammates and get almost no playtime despite being able to get multiple call ups. Valdes/Reina (Spain), Sirigu/De Sanctis (Italy), Weise/ter Stegen (Germany), Mandanda (France), etc.

Some of the Guardian's football coverage is hilarious. A couple of seasons ago they referred to West Ham simply as 'Scott Parker' for a while.

If they are a marquee player, they will require wages befitting a starter, which means any club that already has a starter will not want to buy them in that season. Coupled with the fact that only a few clubs have the cash willing to pay the wages a top player will demand, you only have a small selection of clubs or maybe only one club at any one time that will want the big name keeper. Teams getting great keepers is often about luck - who is available at the time when you are able and willing to buy.
