And if you watch the videos of him most of the "highlights" are 1vs1 situation with the ball on his foot. In CL or against high level teams you will not have 1v1 situations that often especially with the 65+ ball possession that barca usually has. Be fast and good on the ball is not enough on the highest level where you have 11 defenders against you. What makes Messis so great is are not his ballskills, it its his ability to make the right decisions at high pressure situations.
Two things, first barca kinda played bad this whole year, a loss with hands down in milan 2-0, psg managed to be able to advance until the last minute, rm basically outplayed us whenever we met and the final beatdown from bayern. It would be a different story though if the team was playing better football and more importantly if messi was actually fit against bayern. It's not like it was the first time that someone thought to man mark him with 3-4 players. It's that he wasn't physically able to cope with it.
The second thing is that you rightly said that in high level games neymar won't have the luxury of 1v1's. Well that's a good thing actually, lol. That means that either messi or iniesta will have a player less on them. Defenders now don't give a shit if pedro or alexis have a whole 20 squared meters of free space, but with neymar they will care and that will free up space for the rest of the team. The gameplan known as shut-down-messi-and-dont-care-about-the-rest won't be viable anymore.
At least I hope so, if neymar proves to be as good as he seems, if not....

I don't think anyone has any idea if Neymar is going to do good. I'm a believer of the fact that the hype is too big. He's not proven anything against strong opposition yet.
Considering everyone wants him and the people that decide that usually have a decent idea about football I suppose he has the talent. Brasilian league is nothing compared to the European top 5 leagues and as far as I have seen, he hasn't really shown it in international games either.
Will be interesting to watch though. He is young and he will be training with some of the best players in the world so he should improve tons at Barcelona.

I am of the opinion that he should have left Brazil one or two years ago and join a more modest club in Europe first, kinda like Ronaldo and PSV or Ronnie and PSG. I fear it is too big a stage right now for him. And I sure do hope he makes it as a true number 9 because I miss the old days of el fenomeno.
I will be cheering for him!

I don't get the whole "Neymar is overrated" talk;;; he is the hottest young talent in the world right now, and saying that "he's not playing in top leagues so it's too early to guess how he will do in Europe" is pretty silly, Brazilian leagues aren't a push-over and his performances in international competitions show his stamina and ability to adapt to different environments and work with different squads / managers.
Of course it's a gamble as to whether he will keep the pace up after a permanent move across the pond, for all we know he'll start doing cocaine and die in a car crash half way into his contract, but I would say picking him up is a damn good gamble for any team that can afford it. He's a better and more adaptive forward than most EPL vets are at the age of 21 for god's sake :p

He also scored 20 goals in 32 games for the national team. Although I dunno against who it does show he can score internationally as well.

Neymar is a gem, no doubt about that. Will be interesting to se how he adapts to a side that relies heavily on hard defensive work in the opponents half!

Gotta love Klopp,
"Cristiano is so fast, so strong, so incredible, but he has one problem : Leo Messi".
"Cristiano reminds me of german tennis player Michael Stich. He was destined to make history but then Boris Becker showed up".
lol, funny. I like the guy, especially cause he bonds with his players and cares for them and his club. Personally I'd prefer him over Tito any day of the week.

I'm sort of excited to see what Neymar will do in Europe. He's the most hyped player on the planet, so it's not surprising to see that so many are divided about him. I think he'll do well, but I won't go out on a limb and say just how well.
Also, Crystal Palace vs Watford for the last Prem spot. 10 minutes in. 0-0. Dikgacoi out injured for Palace.

Doesn't it feel like LeBron and D-Wade teaming up in Miami? Neymar is a breath of fresh air in Europe as Messi vs Ronaldo is already tired... but as he's teaming up with Messi in Barça then wont it be more difficult for him to get into the debate of who's the best? It's always going ot be Messi's team.

Neymar is more like Birdman. He is nowhere near a worldclass player.

On the first thing you are half right and half wrong in my opinion. You are right that barca had injury problems at crucial games but keep in mind which problems they had (the last couple of years by the way but it was overshadowed by briliant passing and positional play). The lack of hight especially in the midfield and defense, problems with teams that were able to fight on a physical level (like Chelsea 2011 and Bayern this year), and the lack of a "plan b" if the opponent is good enough defensivly against the tikitaka. Neymar will fix none of this problems. Yes Neymar is good and yes he will be an update if he plays at his highest level but paying ~ 50 - 100 M€ for someone who never played a game in a european league is pretty risky.
|
You are right on that and I wanna add that barca's play this year wasn't even tiki-taka, they just passed the ball between the defenders and the midfield back and forth and back again, that's just lame and an easy solution to not give the ball away. The reason this team was hailed as one of the best ever is their ability to pass the ball anyway they liked even some meters away from the goal, that was lost somehow this season. The players most of the time didn't know what to do with the ball so they kept passing backwards. That's the #1 problem tito needs to fix.
|
I agree. Some years ago, Barcelona gameplay used to be beautiful. Always attacking and players always giving awesome passes and assists.
This year with Tito (And last Guardiola year sometimes too) have been like They pass the ball between midfields. So boring.
Anyway, I dont understand why Spanish National Team Coach still calls Reina. There are right now better goalkeepers (De Gea, Diego Lopez, etc.). Reina is so bad, lol.

The question will be if barca is able to recover with this team. Xavi is 33, Puyol 35, Victor Valdes is leaving, Dani Alves (which was a huge part of the success that is often underestimated) is maybe leaving and looked exausted at the end, iniesta too.
A big part of the dominance of the Guardiola era was that he had 11 highly skilled players that runed and defended a lot. He perfectionated the "10 second rule" (winning the ball back as soon as possible) from cruyff but this is only possible with a team that is physical at 100%.
Xavi ran 12km at the 2011 Finals and he does that on a regular base with around 15-20 games more than Bayern or Dortmund (the German league has 2 teams less and only 1 game each round at her "Pokal" which is the german Copa del Rey).

It's more like if the NBA was a smaller league of about 20 teams with most superstars concentrated in a few teams, and the most successful of those teams in recent time get the hottest college BB player of the last five years. Unfortunately that team already has the best player of the world at his position...
So, no, not comparable at all.

Amazing end to ordinary time as Watford and Crystal Palace battle for a PL spot. Almunia playing out of his skin to make several great saves. Looking like it's headed into extra time.
|
Why don't we have any italians here? We must recruit some from other threads. lol
I don't follow the italian league anymore and I was so surprised by their new players in the last euro.

Penalty for Crystal Palace! Zaha is tripped by Casseti. Kevin Phillips cannons it into the top corner. Agony for Watford. 15 minutes to equalise, to drag the tie into penalties.
Penalty shout for Watford now. Looked suspect. Palace almost through now.
Headed away on the goal-line by Palace! Forestieri with the finish. So unbelievably close.
Close again for Watford as Deeney's header is deflected just wide. The resulting to corners come to nothing and the referee call it. Crystal Palace secures promotion into the Premier League!
