In American sports, that is. We had a player "come out" here in Sweden several years ago (son of former Liverpool player Glenn Hysén, in case anyone is interested). Then there's Justin Fashanu, which was a sad story.

That being said, even though barca signed a guy on the last year of his contract for nearly 30 mil, it seems like they paid less than what i initially thought they would. santos reportedly wanted like 50 mil, which i knew wouldn't happen, but i thought barca would pay close to 40, so i thought they did a good job there.
28 mil isn't enough to get a falcao or cavani, and its very nice to get one of the, no THE brightest prospect in the world right now and who will probably contribute right away.
Now, do i think neymar will succeed? who knows, but now that i think about it, i think its kind of wrong for people to doubt him so much because he hasn't played in europe. the brazillian league is actually probably one of the best leagues in the world and could very well compete with european clubs that aren't in the top 4 or 5 leagues. This especially because brazil has actually been able to keep a lot of their stars like damiao, fred, neymar for this long, ganso, and more.
Also, you might stereotype that defenders in the brazillian league aren't big and strong like the european defenders and that neymar could struggle because of this, but trust me, the brazillian league guys are very big and strong
I do agree that brazilian league is underestimated by a lot of peolple, but I don't blame who does that because the league is quite different from any other in the world, just at the start of the competition we have 5 or 6 favourites to be the champion, if not more. Here we have the "12 big", the clubs who will at least fight for the continental positions. And the best players of the league are spread on those 12 most of the years. Look at the Brazil national team, for example. I dont know any other league like that. And the size of the country must be taken in consideration as well.
Sorry for the bad english, i hope its understandable.

Stoke City are coming to the US for preseason as well. They are playing friendlies with Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas, the respective clubs of Geoff Cameron and Brek Shea.
CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, May 25, 2013) – The LA Galaxy today completed the signing of midfielder Robbie Rogers to a multi-year contract after acquiring the right of first refusal for him from the Chicago Fire in exchange for midfielder Mike Magee. Rogers, who will wear the No. 14 shirt, will be officially added to the Galaxy roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and could be eligible to make his debut for the club on Sunday when the Galaxy host Seattle Sounders FC at The Home Depot Center. That game, which is presented by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, kicks off at 8 p.m. (PT).
Departing West Ham United striker Carlton Cole wants a move to MLS.
The Mirror says the former Chelsea and England hit-man, freed by West Ham after seven years at Upton Park, is heading for America - despite interest from the top flight.
Southampton, Stoke and newly-promoted Hull are all keen to offer Cole, 29, deals following his release by the Hammers.
Leeds and relegated QPR, who will be Championship rivals next season, also want to sign the Croydon-born striker.
But Cole, who notched 57 goals in 237 outings for the Hammers, has decided to continue his career in the United States.
DC United, San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo are all ready to tempt Cole with a lucrative contract offer, but LA Galaxy is his preferred destination.

That's not what is worrying me at all... I'm sure he's going to rape many defenders even in Europe but... Is he tactically good enough to play in Barcelona? Will he defend, will he do high pressing? I doubt it... He also seems to be a very individual player, and that would be great if there wasn't Messi, but there is Messi...
The price is 25+ Millions (28?) but just for Santos which holds 55% of the player. The last 45% + the 10M they paid last year to secure the deal, and we're already at 50M. I still think it's a good deal, he will bring a lot of Brazilian fans and Barca will sell a lot of jerseys. And if it's a failure, the 5 years contract allow them to sell him around the same price...

i agree with you on most points, but no one will pay 50 or even 28 million pounds for him if he turns out to be a failure. I think he's a hit or miss player for barca. either he's gonna be awesome, or he will fail spectacularly. No real grey areas here imo

I agree on the last point. But I think he's still going to be good enough to be sold to another rich club like RM or City/Psg for at least 40M... We're not there yet anyway :D I'm still convinced it's going to be bad for Barcelona... To let Madrid spend 70-80M on him would have been the perfect strategy to ensure that they won't be a problem for us in the next years :p The worst thing for me is that we're going to lose Pedro/Tello/Deulofeu over this transfer... They're not gonna leave and Tito is going to have to put Neymar on the field even if he doesnt perform well...

What I meant was, if he's a success, barca won't sell him, but if he fails, then another club would want him for that kind of money on a player who, if he does fail, would be just another robinho. But yeah, we are far away from that haha.
As for letting real get him, I'd agree if it were just about any other club, but real's pockets are so deep that they would barely blink.
And what I'm worried about is that neymar is too similar to the three you named above. If he was under bought for 50 mil as u said, then I would have much rather bought a falcao, cavani or bale

Have you ever watched an entire match of Neymar playing for Santos? If you have then you shouldn't worry about him helping the team. Neymar is a great, great player. I think he won 3/4 of the "best player awards" he could have won since 2010 in BR. I just don't think he is "50 million" material. But oh well I think less than 5 players are worth that much.
I just saw some of his games for Brazil and the usual youtube videos, so that's why everything I say is 'I doubt', 'He might not', ... Now the issue is that even Fabregas that has been in la masia and plays for Spain with the same players, is too weak tactically (at least for now) to play for Barcelona. Just look at yesterday's CL final, both team were so good at teamwork.. These last years, the team that managed to play as one block managed to win the CL. Additionaly, can Neymar play for other players like Messi? Can he just be the number 2 (or 3 because Iniesta is the 2nd most important offensive player for Barca)? Because he will have to do a lot of dirty work like Henry did when he arrived there ('The coach asks me to defend more than to attack', whine whine), and what caused Pedro to replace him after some time. Because Neymar will have to win his spot against Alexis and Pedro who are both sacrificing so much to help the team be balanced... If he can, then I'll be glad I was wrong. But I, for now, am doubting a lot about his integration...
I see WW that you are assuming Tito will make his team press high next year. Why do you think that? He hasn't done so this season and that's one of the reasons barca declined. They need to get the ball immediately after they lose it to make stuff happen and struggle teams like bayern for example who can counter attack like a hurricane.
If Tito doesn't change his mind about that, barca won't do anything good in europe this time as well.
