In Exalted (2E), you were given a certain number of "background points" that you could distribute among various backgrounds, which provided you with things ranging from money to powerful artifacts to allies with info in various cities, etc. Terrestrial exalted, who're more established and affluent in the world than many other types, started off with more background points than other types, for example. Was a good system. In 3E it's been merged with the "Merits and Flaws" system, which is used to get various qualities like being ambidextrous, or a faster than average runner, etc. Still seems good - I like this approach much more than the d&d approach, although 4th edition had backgrounds that gave various benefits. Shadowrun's Character Creation (at least in 5e) is also a lot like this: you can have higher stats, but you'll start with less money for gear. You can get a ton of spells or whatever-the-tech-equivalents-are-called, but you might cast worst or have less Edge. You might get a race with a bunch of innate bonuses, but you'd have to take on a lot of flaws to purchase other things you want in your build. It's definitely more robust than D&D's system, no matter how you look at it imo. Sadly, I've never gotten to try it out (plus I barely remember my Exalted character creation process at this point). Was in my sweats reading a book with some coffee when I was supposed to be at work lol. Sigh... Also found out emancipator released a new album: + Show Spoiler +

Actually, since straight lines aren't really a thing on curved surfaces, there's still ways to fudge the question and come up with an alternate answer (which isn't really a problem, it'd just make your players maybe take way too long to do something simple by making it hard, etc).

If you view the cake as particularly dense spacetime then the line is technically straight
