(And on another note do/did you enjoy it) Hi Wave I know literally the entire musical by heart.

I was under the impression that OWB was the only TLer(that I know of) that is anywhere near me, but fwiw I grew up in Chardon, which is a little south of Mentor, and if that's meaningless to you then you didn't grow up near me =p.
I'm pretty sure NE Ohio is like a dead gaming area. I remember when TBC launched, I didn't pre-order it, I literally showed up to the mall at midnight and was one of only like 6 people, so I just walked up and got a copy for what I think was at the time the largest game launch in history. The Cleveland barcrafts that tried to get going had very little response(I followed the thread to see if it would be worth attending), there's like no local LAN scene. It would probably be different if I grew up in Columbus instead.

How musically oriented are you? I'm curious. (I feel silly asking an asian this question) Same question to those who answer the earlier question I guess. Really hard question to answer. I played piano (poorly) and violin (mehly), as well as a stint with a clarinet and an oboe that might as well have not existed. I'm an awful singer and practically tone deaf. I never really put the effort into learning music theory (again, related to my terrible pitch and tone abilities), but I'm very familiar with western classical (art) music traditions from an "academic" perspective, and extremely familiar from a music history perspective. For example, I can discuss in great length and detail on the significance of Beethoven's Third Symphony and how the Romantic period practically began with the C-sharp in the seventh measure, but god help me if I need to identify a C-sharp by ear. So I'm simultaneously really good and really bad at music if that makes any sense. It makes perfect sense, though I wonder if your 'poorly' and 'mehly' are false modesty. What is your point of comparison? Like...what level did you reach in piano or what was the most complicated piece you're capable of playing?

Essentially the reason I ask is because our program has a yearly "Skit night' in which each year has 45 minutes to do a variety show of sorts to make fun of profs, show off talents and whatnot. I wrote a bunch of songs with optometry-related lyrics to Les Mis songs (and not bragging here, but they're pretty awesome) and I'm getting way more resistance to the idea than I expected because apparently people don't know the songs and can't identify with them. (It honestly shouldn't matter much but bleh) I find it really difficult to believe that so many people in my class don't know the musical at all.

*shrug* I've never done theatre, but all 3 of my biological siblings have. It is surprising how few people are familiar with much of the theatre world though.

It's not false modesty. I gave up on piano pretty early when I was kid (something I regret). I don't know what level it corresponds to/what system of levels we're talking about (most of the classifications are super silly anyways...), and there's certainly a difference between playing and playing well. I wouldn't say I played any piece well, but to an untrained ear I could reasonably fraud something like most of Pathetique. To a trained ear my Fur Elise still sounds like shit so ~_~
I reached a notably higher level with violin, but I was also very preoccupied with other things while I played and never really committed to it (I also didn't like (still don't) the violin repertoire as much as I liked the piano repertoire), and that notably higher level is only in relation to my abysmal piano, so it doesn't account for much.

I'm using the term "musically oriented" to show that I have a really big passion for it. In the sense that I naturally have aptitude for it, in some areas I really do but in most places, I'm total shit. I'm really good at identifying notes from any instrument and playing them back (transposing, etc. etc.) but my reading and tonal shit hasn't gotten much better in five years.

(Jackman did a pretty damn good job imo but nobody compares to Colm Wilkinson) 10th Anniversary is undisputably the best performance of Les Miserables, but I think Russel Crowe got a really bad rap, more so than he deserved. Stars wasn't sung unbearably poorly, but it was still awful because he was just singing lyrics instead of really capturing the moral transformation that Javert goes through (something Phillip Quast does beatifully). Other than that though, Russel Crowe is by far the best person to ever act the part of Javert (and I've seen quite a few), and I'd seen the musical enough times to want something different in the movie, which they offered by mostly declining the beautiful melodic tones of Les Mis in favor of a more "unclean" musical performance carried by the acting. That was the job of the movie, and it did it well. Besides, we can't all have a 100 person orchestra and a 150 person chorus behind us in the acoustics of Royal Albert Hall. Just my two cents on that.
