Unless there's some sort of silent agreement between all of the pool players to just fuck around, you'd want to get that high seed otherwise you're gonna end up playing someone like TSL_Alive or something in the first round, which to say the least, isn't something you'd want.

I'm sure IPL staff has good reasons for their format That's certainly part of the reason. The other part is if you win your group you're likely going to get the foreigner.

I think having "meaningless" group matches is a great chance for the tourney staff to make sure everything is running smoothly, etc.

A lot. They actually don't matter much at all. I don't see why anyone would play seriously and show their best prepared strategies and tendencies on games that have marginal importance.

It seems like its only there to provide more content, which isn't too bad, but I doubt anyone is going to show their real builds in the group stages. I'd imagine it goes something like: Top 16 of the open bracket qualify. bracket plays out 1-16 are placed. #1-4 pool play draws #13-16 open bracket #5-8 pool play draws #9-12 open bracket #9-12 pool play draws #5-8 open bracket #13-16 pool play draws #1-4 open bracket. Are people seriously thinking there's 0 importance behind pool play, it may not be your life and death in the tournament, but it's probably going to be the difference between drawing an EG Puma and drawing an EG incontrol. Players might not break out their brand new builds for this part of the tournament, but you can bet no one will be straight up messing around with their games.

I'm sure IPL staff has good reasons for their format The Format seems straight forward. - Pool play allows for higher level games for days 1 & 2 (avoiding the 2010 MLG problem). - Seeding *does* help the Pro Players. First in Pool play should get someone that finished 4th in their "Open Bracket", so that will likely be a weaker pro (or a good amatuer on a big run). This should avoid the Ret v Puma problem from NASL S1 Finals. - We get to watch more Boxer. - Fans get a chance to interact with the Pros more (see the number of Signings going on). - Gives content for 4 days rather than 2 or 3. And avoids the MLG 2010 problem, again. - Single Elimination for Championship bracket, as they don't have time to air a Double Elimination over 2 days, without doing 4 streams at once. - Let's players get over the "Jet Lag" problem, as if they biff their Pool, they still have a full run to the Finals available to them. It makes sense for what they want to do. Especially since everyone in the Top 32 wins 1k. A 1st in Pool is practically assured 2k.

It's not like you are guaranteed an easier opponent if you work your ass of to win the pool. They're not absolutely meaningless but I if you wanna do well, you have to be able to beat whoever comes against you in the bracket anyway. I'm sure the players don't take any pressure from the pool play matches.

Well facing the worst qualified player from the open bracket and then another bad opponent is pretty much a sealed ro8 spot anyway.
