Saying pool play is meaningless is almost saying that every ladder game ever played is meaningless. but people still watch player streams all the time.

They want to produce more content, more games. Some people may like it but personally I don't care about matches that don't mean anything. I wouldn't be surprised to see a ton of cheese and something like 1 base bc/mothership etc.

You still earn a better seed whereas placing last earns you a really crappy seed thus you don't get any "easy" rounds. So it actually does matter.

But how are they deciding which seed plays which player from the open bracket? Are they seeding the open bracket, and if so, how are they going to do that?

It seems like its only there to provide more content, which isn't too bad, but I doubt anyone is going to show their real builds in the group stages.

??? Unless there's some sort of silent agreement between all of the pool players to just fuck around, you'd want to get that high seed otherwise you're gonna end up playing someone like TSL_Alive or something in the first round, which to say the least, isn't something you'd want.

But how are they making sure that the best open bracket players get the highest seeds?

Dunno, one option would be to play it out (?) i.e when you reach top16 you still play the open bracket out to determine seeds.
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

The explanation given by the IPL staff made a lot of sense for me :

NASL got people to come from all around the world, and get knocked out after 1 BO3. So some of those people who have travelled from so far away have played 2 maps.

Here, every player who has been invited/qualified will at least play a full pool stage + 1 bracket match.

Seems weird, but cool for the players and great for the viewers imo.

That doesn't make sense if that's the reason...having players play 3 meaningless group matches just for the sake of them playing more games isn't that good.

I'm sure IPL staff has good reasons for their format

The Format seems straight forward.

- Pool play allows for higher level games for days 1 & 2 (avoiding the 2010 MLG problem).
- Seeding *does* help the Pro Players. First in Pool play should get someone that finished 4th in their "Open Bracket", so that will likely be a weaker pro (or a good amatuer on a big run). This should avoid the Ret v Puma problem from NASL S1 Finals.
- We get to watch more Boxer.
- Fans get a chance to interact with the Pros more (see the number of Signings going on).
- Gives content for 4 days rather than 2 or 3. And avoids the MLG 2010 problem, again.
- Single Elimination for Championship bracket, as they don't have time to air a Double Elimination over 2 days, without doing 4 streams at once.
- Let's players get over the "Jet Lag" problem, as if they biff their Pool, they still have a full run to the Finals available to them.

It makes sense for what they want to do. Especially since everyone in the Top 32 wins 1k. A 1st in Pool is practically assured 2k.

Not to mention the point of E-sport tournaments is to entertain the fans, and what better way of entertaining nerds than games with great players on a big stage?

How are they meaningless games exactly? Don't winners get a better seed?

Seeds are pretty random anyway. It's not like you are guaranteed an easier opponent if you work your ass of to win the pool. They're not absolutely meaningless but I if you wanna do well, you have to be able to beat whoever comes against you in the bracket anyway. I'm sure the players don't take any pressure from the pool play matches.
Yes, you are quite guaranteed an easier opponent. Just look at the open bracket finishes from the most recent MLG (Raleigh), which was fairly similar to the IPL3 open bracket in terms of good players :

13-16th : rsvp, Lost, Cruncher, wbc
9-12th : HwangSin, PainUser, KawaiiRice, ostojiy
5-8th : Drewbie, Orly, DeMuslim, Tyler
1-4th : Puma, Trimaster, Hero, Noblesse

I don't know about you, but wbc seems less intimidating than Puma as a first opponent in a single-elimination bracket...
