I don't disagree that toss should go for attack upgrades...especially if you ramp up your immortal numbers. It's just that defensive upgrades for Toss would be kind of worthless vs mass Thor.

So say we have a upgrade race between forge upgrades and armory upgrades...it wouldn't look good for toss.

Thors vs Stalkers: +1 attack = +3 damage ... +1 armor = -1 incoming damage
Stalkers vs Thors: +1 attack = +1 damage ... +1 armor = -0.5 incoming damage (remembering that stalkers are 50/50 hp/shields)

Obviously in the late game Armory upgrades could represent a serious advantage over forge upgrades.

Yeah like cruncher would be rolled over as well .

Or like HuK rolled over Hasu

I don't think anybody was expecting that, really. HuK was probably considered a slight favourite, but everybody had already seen too much of his PvP to be confident. Hasu had a pretty strong reputation in PvP coming in as well, so I don't think many people were too surprised about the outcome. I was expecting a 2-1 in either direction, personally.

I said that it was relatively even all the time but....

This was the liquibet for that match:
TLAF-Liquid`HuK 89% (6860 : 860)

Wow. I didn't realize it was that one-sided. Maybe that was the result of a lot of hopeful fanboys. =P (Or the fact that Hasu was relatively unknown outside of Europe, and especially Germany.)

I voted for HuK, but if anybody had asked me I'd have said that it was far from a sure thing. Without my Canadian bias, perhaps I would have voted for Hasu.

Everyone in the WC3 scene knows Hasu is a big name so labelling him "unknown" outside of Germany is false.

Everybody had been making a big deal of HuK since he won MLG Raleigh, and even more so after he joined Team Liquid and went to Korea. Hasu may not have been truly unknown, but I feel perfectly comfortable saying that compared to HuK, he had a very small share of the spotlight.

Completely true. I can't argue with that.

Great point and quote from Thorzain himself about the armor upgrades vs zealots and I retract my earlier assertion that zealots are a counter to Thors. Just goes to show how impressive those armor upgrades are vs toss...not only vs zealots but against stalkers (14 - 1 - 3 = 10) and against sentries (6 - 1 - 3 = 2). Even vs Voids (12-21 ??) would go to 8-17 (math could be off). Vs Carriers... 5 - 1 - 3 = 1... so would be just one hit per interceptor strike if my math is right. Vs Colossi... 15 - 1 - 3 = 10 (and that's probably with no splash).

Only counter to upgraded Thors would really be more immortals than you have strike cannon rounds or just a huge number of stalkers.

Carriers own em up pretty good. I'm trying to get a replay up now but I had 8 carriers, 10 Phoenix for vikings plus a few zealots & stalkers for cannon foughter and - he had about 8 thor, 20 marines, 6 BF hellions, 10 vikings, 10 marauders and I only lost all my ground, 1 carrier, and half phoenix while wiping his force out,

Great thing is since you're upgrading carriers attack anyway (a must) so do your pheonix and they start owning vikings too. He doesnt have the money to do it all at armory.

Voids problem is they clump up and get decimated by splash in addition to vikings and rines shooting at them.

Mass immortals problem is half get decimated by cannon right at the start, and you can't carry a good retinue with them due to supply issues, then his support troops and thors mop up the rest.

Wish we would see carriers more often on big maps...do think they are viable but so many pro's are stuck in the rut of not using them from when smaller maps were more popular.

I'm surprised that you build phoenix to counter vikings as 1 on 1...they are almost are the same in the unit map tester...and yet a carrier by itself no upgrades can take about 3 vikings (almost what a carrier would cost). Wouldn't it make more sense to just make more carriers instead? Phoenix and interceptors do have AWESOME attack upgrades vs vikings...if my math is correct they go from +5 to +6 with air +1. That's a 20% boost in firepower which is insane considering that blizzard loves to have the upgrades gravitate toward 10% each.

Because we watched how he played against the 2 zergs

And how is that? Safe? Idra is just a hypocrite and you guys are idiots.

more like boring. and Idra actually does cool shit like drops, Cruncher generally just sits on his ass until he's maxed and then attacks.

No Idra does not usually do drops. He did drops against Cruncher because Cruncher was turtling. Idra and Tyler criticize people for taking risks and not playing safe and then turn around and flame Cruncher for playing safe and having the best chance to win. Everyone on TL chimes in on the Cruncher hate. I'm not even a fan of the guy, I just think you all need to have your own minds instead of being fucking sheep.

It's not really about play safe, its that his style is so fucking boring. When he's not doing a 1 base all in he sits in his base and maxes out. Wins sure, but it's such a boring style to play. Mass up, attack, game is decided, that's not how starcraft should be and it's irritating because it works so well. If you watch people like incontrol play, their style is so much more dynamic. Always pressuring, dancing back and forth, sniping units, feigning aggresion, etc. Point is they actually do something with their units other than just wait for your money composition and move out. They;re always active, and that's really how the game should be played and what the game should reward.

Ok king of starcraft I didn't know that you get to decide "how the game should be played".

It doesn't take a king to realize a dynamic, eventful game is far better than one where two sides do nothing but get a desired unit combination, attack each other once, and have the game be decided right away.

V mass thor the protoss player wants to play the upgrade style though, ie expand everywhere, harass everywhere, all the while building up a slow advantage, either through tech (carriers) or upgrades.

Ridiculous. Thorzain played well, and also benefited from the ridiculous SCV repair rate.

So many scrubs in this thread...

Who cares if you live in a closer vicinity than someone else to a specific player. Do you have nothing to be proud of in your own life that you have to take pride in such arbitrary things such as a nationalities results in a SC2 tournament, and make it public? The same thing goes for WC3 vs BW. If you preferred one game, why bother taking pride in a player that was a pro in that game winning... just appreciate the players as people.

I think it's compensation for so much ignorance around here regarding the EU scene, rather than nationalism per se. I mean 90% of people picking Huk over HasuObs or the absolutely uninformed hosts of SotG saying that Kas would lose 3-0 Nada -- that made me lol -- and the legions of bots agreeing with them kinda was too much for some people -- me included, and I am not even from europe lol.

I think the "absolutely uninformed hosts of SotG" picking Nada had more to do with them loving Nada and less to do with their ignorance of EU.

My point is, if your opinion will affect so many people, shouldn't you make an effort to at least be objective?

What influence do they have over the results of the game? Hmmm....

Yeah... that's right.

I think you just randomly typed something there trying to make sense but failed. Please RTFP before posting such dribble.

What did you have trouble comprehending?

Trying to understand non-sequiturs isn't my forte.

Well I'm glad you didn't just specify what part... but I will break down all of my response towards you. Obviously the part before the quote was not addressed to you.

"What influence do they have over the results of the game?" This is a question asking you what influence the cast of SOTG has over the outcome of the game. The answer is clearly none (unless you really want to argue over small psychological factors...) therefore I put "Hmmm...." to imply that the answer was very obvious.

Then I said "Yeah... that's right." The purpose of this line was to show that since the answer to the question was clearly that they have no influence over the games, that their opinions really don't matter. You can therefore imply that I feel it really isn't necessary that they each research every topic they are going to discuss... especially when questions are brought up on the fly.

I never claimed they --sotg-- exerted any influence on the game results, ergo it's a non-sequitur.

Probably, but they're still human.

I give them a break. I also don't take everything they say as scripture. And I also enjoy their show.

It's possible to do all 3 at once. It's a good show that's not perfect and it features opinions of a group of 4 humans. Nothing more.

It's easy pal, you don't need to be super-human, just invite someone who really follows the EU scene.. not just US players who spent half the time whining about balance and who have no time to follow smaller tournaments.

Well the problem is that there's like... 1 progamer from the UK, and the rest are faily uncomfortable with English. Sure they can all speak decent English, but often times not very freely.

They don't need to be pro players.

They've already stated that they're not gonna bring in a cohost who's just some random master level guy, as it's a whole different thing when it comes to tournaments and pro level of play.
Things work in the highest level that doesn't work on the ladder, and most stuff that works on the ladder doesn't work in pro level of play.
TLO is a good choice though imo. He's very unbiased obviously, and he plays both zerg and terran back and forth, which balances out the protoss heavy panel

It would depend on the type of discussion.. for balance discussions, well of course pro player's opinions are very important... the thing is, the show follows mostly a Sport Center format.. where they ask each host their opinion about every tournament that occurred in the last 7 days... how and why they went the way they did... you really don't need to be a pro to answer those questions, you just need to know all the participant players really well, i.e. you need to follow the scene.

Well the hosts do a brilliant job (atleast imo) of telling how and why things went as they went.. They just say they're surprised when a relatively unknown player who's won like 1 viking cup beats two GSL champions and the old TSL champion.
It's not like it's hindering their analysis in any way. They can still discuss what was showed in the games, even though they can't really comment on what went down in the viking cup.
Speaking of Thorzain ofcourse as an example.

Well, KAS was tearing the EU scene dude, he was not just winning a viking cup here and there.. the thing is, neither of those guys KNEW that, because they just don't have the time to go and watch EU tournaments. Not having information would obviously hinder anyone's analysis, and this was not exception.

Again it doesn't matter that it hindered their analysis, they are just sharing their opinions. Im sure most people watch sotg just because its funny as hell and like to listen to their input. If you want to know whos good or what not, there are plenty of good ressources on TL, you could check TLPD for stats and theres also a tournament roundup every month in TL news.

I am not so sure about that, but I rather stop this discussion right here if you are ok with it.

Australia/Asia to US server ~200ms latency.
Australia/Asia to Europe server ~400-500ms latency (for some weird reason).

400ms latency is you being killed, you reacting, and ~1s later your units respond to your commands.
