MotM June 2014 winners have been chosen! For the first time, tried a process without any judges involved! Here's what we did this month:
Members of the Map Cave (skype group with 50+ members, PM me if you want in) have each picked their 3 favorite maps from this month. The maps with the most backers were then used for the public poll, which everyone could vote on.
I think that worked very well this month and we will be repeating the process for MotM July, with some minor improvements!

Anyway, here are the results of that process!

1st Place was claimed by Uvantak with his map KTV Chaac Marshes, with 25% of all votes!
He will receive 60$!

2nd Place goes to -NegativeZero- and his map AEM World of Sleepers, which got 19% of all votes!
He will receive 30$.

3rd Place goes to Red Rock Ridge by lefix, which got 16% of all votes.
He will receive 20$!

4th Place went to Epimetheus by Namrufus, which was only 1 vote short of being tied for third place.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

5th Place went to AEM Mutiny by Timetwister22, which actually was the favorite map of the map cave, along with AEM World of Sleepers. Also, only 2 votes short of being tied for third place.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

6th Place went to AEM Demon's Claw by NewSunshine, which was also not too far behind. Less than a handful votes seperated 3rd and 6th place!

Full results of the poll can be found here:

This month's Special Award goes to Disaster Area, another map by Namrufus. He will receive 15$ for his creative and also very polished map, which we would love to see some games on! Keep up to good work!

With that said, All map posted after the 25th of June on will be considered for MotM July 2014!

All you need to do is to create a map thread following the forum guidelines (please include a top down overview) AND publish the map on battle.net.

Please feel free to share your submissions in this thread! It's a nice way to give your maps some more exposure, and supports the winning maps by keeping this thread up a little longer. I will not make an extra thread for July submissions!

Once again we are taking donations! Like last month, 50% of the donations will be used for the competition prize pool. The other 50% will be saved up to fund upcoming MotM events. So far, there are 110$ in the MotM event funds!

If you also want to support MotM, send your donations towards

sc2motm[at]gmail.com

via paypal.

Donations for this month so far:
lefix: 20$
Plexa: 20$
Namrufus: 15$
LoveTool: 40$
-NegativeZero-: 30$

Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuttttttttttttttt.............

Okay, that was really unexpected, i was waiting for Mutiny or World Of Sleepers to win b/c they have some pretty damn interesting ideas. It's not like i'm mad or anything.... just unexpected.

None the less i'm always glad plp like my maps, but every time i see my own maps i can't avoid seeing their flaws and such, to me they look pretty ugly sometimes, i suppose everyone who has every done a drawing or anything related to art or design has felt this way about his own things.

Will there be a tournament using the maps? Would be awesome to see how they fare in actual gameplay.

I voted for the marshes. I'm not too excited about world of sleepers getting 2nd but /shrug.

Would be sweet to have 2 tournaments a year. Take the #1 map from each month and after 5 months you'll have 5 maps, which is perfect for a tournament.

So, we had May, June, July, August, Sept MoTM contests then a MoTM tourny with those 5 winners in Oct. Followed by 5 more MoTM contests etc etc etc.

Be pretty sweet imo.

Keep in mind you'd want to have some synergy between those maps. So I wouldn't neccesarily pick all 1st placed maps as a map pool, if other maps possibly compliment each other better. Feel free to theorycraft further

I also think Demon's claw would have done much better if it was a different texture set. Has there ever been a "good" lava texture map yet? As much as people say they vote for the "better" map, let's be honest here, a lot of people vote for the best looking map.

Sadly. I really should give up on dark tilesets, they seem to be the best way to make a map lose.

Maybe the reason it placed so low could also have been just because it's "too standard"? (not that there's anything wrong with that of course, I love well-made standard maps like that one, but just the majority's preference)

Indeed, there's a flash factor my map is missing, Mutiny is an excellent foil to it in this regard. I've started moving into deeper map dynamics though, stuff that changes how you approach the map in a fundamental way, only problem is it doesn't have gold minerals or rocks placed in odd ways. What I'm doing is more in the vein of Cloud Kingdom. And the tileset was never gonna help. Oh well.

I am actually into maps that stand out, without having "gold minerals or rocks placed in odd ways". Something like that is rare

Out of all maps ever posted? More like one out of 100.
There are alot of maps that are kind of wild and experimental, innovative if you want. But usually they don't feel very smooth and polished. That's something I rarely see, but that's just my opinion

Aren't rank 1, 3 and 4 all very standard maps?

So.. by my last count there are a few hundred maps on TL since sc2 launch, that would mean only 3 or 4 should have been "laddered in"?

What? I never said that :D
Standard maps are perfectly fine and it is challenging enough to come up with yet new layouts within the given boundaries.
I was only referring to maps that try to stand out from the standard.

There have been dozens of maps which would have made great ladder maps, but got overlooked.

I meant that since beta release, 3 or 4 maps that are NOT standard (whatever that means) could/should have been laddered in...

By my count only the lava map got in (which speaks volumes about blizzard's choices from where I am sitting),

.. my understanding of what you said is that only 3 or 4 of those "non standard yet interesting" maps could/should have got in...

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I am not discussing "standard" but only non standard / quirky / out of the box (whatever people call them..)

I was just trying to get people's opinion on the matter (yours first of course) on which ones you felt were "ladder good enough"

(for instance, the teleporter or special zones' maps (reducing speed or lowering hp of units ...?)

There are a lot of pretty good maps, and from only a month's work! I'm happy about that Unfortunately many of them have problems that make them unplayable and/or are super boring.

These seem the most interesting while still being playable to me:
Isomer
Mockingbird
Outpost
Pantheon Nova
Verge

These I really liked but wanted to see something different in order to pull it together. When the voting comes out I'll probably be more thorough in my critiques.
Tar
Samarra Mines
Fen
Enchanted Scar
Oasis

retexture it into a beach map and resubmit next month, no one will be any the wiser
