I am here to talk to you about DYESL, and a tournament that I want to run in order to find new maps for the upcoming Autumn Season of the League.
Let me start from the beginning. Under my team, Discover your Energy, I run a tournament league (monthly) in Edmonton, Alberta. It draws from the best talent in the province, including xsixMKENGYN, nrgDime, area51SaroVati, etc. We have about high master/grandmaster players that attend on a semi-regular bases, and maps receive about 100 or so games per tournament.
Maps receive such a high play-rate because the tournament uses a map pool of four type-specific maps. Those familiar with Brood War will understand this system, for those of you who don't, this is how it works:
There are four "types" of maps in SC2/BW: Strategy, Micro, Standard, Macro.
Strategy maps require a new, different style of play- it's the map that you prepare something special and different for. Cloud Kingdom, Crossfire, are good examples of Strategy maps. These maps are free to be very different and special. They never are starting maps at DYESL tournaments, and they are the quickest to be rotated out, because they are inherently imbalanced maps once their strategic depth is depleted (think Crossfire).
Micro Maps are smaller maps with fewer expansions, specifically ones where early/midgame and micro situations are most common. Ohana is a great micro map.
Standard maps are the bread and butter maps of SC2. The ones where you CAN rush, you CAN play macro, you CAN cheese, or do whatever you want. The open ended maps. Daybreak is a good (if not a bit old) standard map.
Macro maps are those that encourage late game, long situations. They are those where it's hard(er) to cheese, 4/spawn maps are more common, etc. Whirlwind/Metropolis are good macro maps.
For reference, DYESL Summer had the following map pool: Strategy: Cloud Kingdom Micro: Ohana Standard: Daybreak Macro: Metropolis
DYESL Autumn is looking at the following map pool. Maps in brackets will be used if no better maps are found.
Strategy: YOU DECIDE Micro: (Ohana) Standard: Macro: Whirlwind
This brings me to the tournament itself. I am looking for maps from you awesome community members to be played in DYESL events. I will be judging the maps with my team, and play-testing them both with local players and pros that I have contact with (at their discretion). Local players will give their general impressions on the maps as well, which will weigh in on my decisions. Moreover, the community will have a chance to vote on submissions (of course I'll ask you to not vote for yourself.... please It ruins the fun). At the end of the day, while I will take the polls seriously, I will withhold judgement. Maps will be rigorously tested before being picked as well
Each player is free to submit 4 maps, 1 for every "map type" (rush/strat/macro/micro). When submitting maps, please label them above the picture, next to the name of the map according to their type. If you are unsure of their type, please put "unsure of category" in the header.
Prizes: For every map used, I will give the winner $25 via paypal. If your map is a resounding hit during the tournament, I will give you an additional $25. Do understand, however, that your map has to be ADORED to earn the additional moneys.
In short, you will have a potential $50 to earn for every map you submit.
Finally, this tournament will most likely NOT run monthly, but quarterly (Jan/April/July/October).
Submit Deadlines are September First. I will be judging the maps in the post. If you edit in a revision by the deadline, please PM me that you changed the map version.

Sorry! Haha. Woah. didn't know there was a prize involved! Good luck on the tournament!

Oh cool, I will definitely be submitting some maps. Thank you for considering community maps for your tournament. It's a win-win situation as map makers have the opportunity to get their maps played more whilst small tournaments like yours get a unique feel to them, making them stand out from the others. To submit maps do we just post them in this thread?
Ooo interesting. I'll definitely have to submit a couple maps to this. September 1st eh, that's plenty of time to hopefully create something new! That or just tweak up some of my older maps. haha.
DYEAlabaster, you get one thousand map community points. This is the kind of grass roots (I want to shoot myself) buildup that will make mapping into a mainstay of the sc2 experience and not just a hidden assumption like your water and electric service. I hope some innovative maps get the spotlight! Such a sweet number of quality games on new maps.
edit: Also, adapting on new maps should be a much bigger part of the pro play experience, not just hashing out the same build orders on a revolving palette of standard maps.
I'll toss a few maps at this. Can't hurt~ (Although I'm very curious to see the Edmonton community's reaction to whatever you pick at DYESL given their reactions in the past. Looking forward to it!). I might even finish a fourth map between now and the end of the contest, but no guarantees!
Bug testing is complete, just needs masters-level games played on it to confirm everything before it becomes a full ESV map as per new testing policies
We have rotated this map out of ESV's map pool due to a large volume of newer maps coming in. Ignore the watermark on the image, I still need to update the image

I might have something ready for this, I have a couple of special maps I'm working on that should hopefully be... dare I say... worthy :p
It plays out pretty standard, aside from the backdoor x)

Oh wow, I didn't realize the only thing that attributed to this was size and & of bases. The map is reasonably choked and built around 2 base play, not turtle to 4 bases and make all the boys. :D
