Are you thus ruling out unaware roles and/or voting roles?
Unaware roles are kinda like lying by omission.
Depending on implementation, voting roles (doublevoter, voteless, etc) may require the running votecount to be inaccurate so as to avoid modconfirming the role, i.e. the role effect is applied only at the EoD final vote count.

Shape, you mangled your time bbcode, bro.
Also, general PSA : it's better if you use the complete date tag (which can do date+time) instead of only the time tag in such situations.

You are the Time Traveler!
+ Show Spoiler +Research efforts into creating a time machine are still ongoing... causality is a major hurdle. BUT! With our current level of technology! We have discovered a way for you to send messages to the future! (It’s called “pen and paper”)
You can submit messages to the hosts to “send to the future”. You have a maximum of five messages per night. You must specify the following: - Message contents - Approximate time for the message to be posted (e.g. N2+6 hours, D3+32 hours) - Time must be at least one hour before or after the deadline All messages will be anonymous and posted by the hosts. The research team have achieved a massive breakthrough! Time Travel has been researched successfully!
During the day, you can go back in time and steal one use of a dead player’s role. Passive abilities and one-shot abilities that have already been expended are not included. Items and quests are also excluded.
A stolen role can be used starting from the night phase following the day phase on which it was acquired. Stolen roles may also be stored for later use.
Rules governing the dead player’s ability use will apply.
You can only use each stolen role once. You can only use one stolen role per phase.
This is in addition to your existing abilities.
The Gods deem a Change in Play
Government inspectors preparing to condemn an old, abandoned tavern have salvaged a magical item from the dilapidated building. An Ouija Board, an artifact that permits communication with otherworldly beings!
Each night, one poll question may be submitted to the Ouija Board along with a maximum of five answer options to pick from. There is no restriction the content of the question or answer options. (Please do keep question to a reasonable length -- no WoTs -- and simple options.)
To facilitate this, hosts will run an election in the voting thread.
To become a candidate, propose your platform in the voting thread. State what poll question you would ask, and what answer options you will provide.
##campaign Poll question…? Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Option 5
All players have one vote with which to ##elect: the “ouija board representative”. Voting is not mandatory.
At the end of the night phase, the elected candidate’s most recent campaign platform will be selected for the Ouija Board.
Only ##campaign and ##elect: actions allowed in the voting thread. Please keep discussion in the game thread.

Everyone has been invited to a feast! Listed below are the items up for grabs. To receive yours, PM the account “Irresistible Object” with the item you want. You are encouraged to submit backup options in order of preference as this is first-come-first-served! You may only successfully take one item.

Game A Day 4
weather > shapelog’s internet
darthfoley was found dead.
You are an Apprentice of the House of Brown.
You suffered a delirious night filled with hallucinations and fevered dreams as part of your induction to become an Initiate of the House of Brown -- a secret society built upon “civilized discourse” and “freedom of discussion”, free of “[discrimination] against anyone based on their social, economic, cultural, political background and leanings”. You share a neigbourhood QT with the other members (link). Your alignments are not known/confirmed to one another.
Subsequently, you acquired a brown robe! Remain brown even when others peer closely at you! You show up as Brown to alignment checks. [This is a passive ability, not an item.]
With this, you were elevated to the rank of Apprentice.
Good morning, Citizens of Laz! DanausBank is pleased to announce today's lending rates for our LIQUIDity™ VoteLoans! The Borrowing Limit for today is 0.36. The prevailing interest rate is 12.8%. Eligible citizens may apply for a loan by submitting the requested amount to Irresistible Object: ##loan <amount> The amount may be specified up to two decimal places, and may not exceed today's borrowing limit. We look forward to serving you!
This is the poll that will be presented to the spirits:
Ok board, lets do round 2.
Who's the scummer?
1: Grack 2: Darth 3: Slam 4: Chez 5: GB
Their answer will be scribed in a public ceremony at midday today. All citizens of Laz are invited to bear witness.
Paper planes
The City of Laz holds a festival for their warriors every year in the springtime. Citizens would take the names of the fallen warriors, those who were not able to return back home, and put their name onto a piece of paper. They would write a message to that warrior. They finish off by folding their messages into paper planes and throwing them up in the air all at once.
Most are picked up by the city’s cleaners.
- Everyone is allowed to send one private message to a player of your choice today.
- Hosts will relay the message on your behalf. Do not contact other players directly.
- Submit your message via PM to the shared host account (Irresistible Object) using the following format:
Recipient: Message:
- Only plain text is permitted in the messages. No bbcode formatting or images please.
- Messages have a 400-character limit. Messages that are too long will be truncated.
- You will be identified as the sender of your message.
- Message should be submitted before midday (Tuesday, Jan 10 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)) and will be relayed “soon after”™ midday
Clarification: You may not send paper planes into the other game. Keep it within Game A please.
Weather Forecast for the City of Laz. Issued by the Royal Meteorological Authority It will be foggy most of the day with some light wind and rain. If we’re lucky we might have a few occasional spots of sunshine, but it is best to be prepared for a cool damp day ahead.
The Gods deem a Change in Play
The traveling circus is pleased to announce that its widely-renowned carousel has been repaired and has passed all checks required by the safety inspectors!
During the day, players can use the carousel by typing ##board the carousel in the vote thread.
All actions performed on carousel-riders during the following night will be randomised and redirected to other carousel-riders. All actions originally targeted at one individual player (say, playerA) will be redirected together onto another individual player (say, playerB).
In the event that only one player boards the carousel, they will compulsively use all of their own available actions (but not items) onto themselves. This does not include mafia KP. This overrides any restrictions on the number of abilities that can be used per night by the solo carousel passenger.
Players can only attempt to enter the carousel once per day.
Passengers on board the carousel can choose to kick someone else off the ride using ##eject <target> in the vote thread. Ejection from the carousel is determined by instant majority among passengers.

Game B Day 1
While the City of Laz struggled with the ongoing chaos and violence, within the highest circles a different kind of crisis was playing out. Various nobles had gathered to decide the future of the kingdom's government.
Rumour has it that many unscrupulous nobles intended to cut off the rightful heirs of Erisal's bloodline, and establish their own system of rule. It is even said that these nobles may now outnumber the righteous ones...
+ Show Spoiler [aborted version] +Succession Crisis in Laz (Game B) Setup2 Heirs - blue and green3 Nobles - blue, green and red (3p)Players will receive supplemental information in their role PMs. 48 hour day phases. Vote to lynch (e.g. ##exile: cakepie) one player per day. Use the voting thread. When there is a numerical tie in the vote count, the tiebreak rules are: - First, Nobles will be treated as having more voting power than heirs. - If a tie still exists, then 3p voting power will be treated as most powerful. Kingmaker situations will cause the game to end in 3p victory. This game is nightless. Deadlines are still at 00:00 GMT (+00:00). Players / Flipsdarthfoley ExO_ Koshi Superbia Time Traveler
Game B Day 1 When King Erisal died, he left no direct descendents. At the time, he had two distant nephews, who were both too young to rule. And so the Kingdom has been administered by a regency council, a committee of nobles, while the two claimants to the throne grew up. Neither heir has a particularly strong claim, being distantly related to the late King. But each of them are supported by a faction of nobles who wish to see their respective candidate on the throne. (And to reap the political benefits, of course.) And then there are also some nobles who view both heirs as illegitimate, and seek to seize power for themselves. It is in such political climate that the two heirs have come of age. Now ready to claim the throne, they have arrived in the capital of Laz, to stake their claim. But they are new here, and it is difficult for them to know: who among the nobility are their allies and foes? And so begins the backroom dealing to determine the next ruler of the Kingdom.
Role PMs soon™ You may begin when you receive your role PMs.

And in my mind I also wanted the ring quest to serve as a test of HoB -- to reinforce that they are not confirmed to one another, and to see if they could surmount the N1 and heal the rift to regain trust in one another like their D1 circle. (Snap decision in response to df question, to allow impersonation made things too hard and caused even more trouble, in hindsight)

Like disfo, I gotta go back to bed and catch more sleep Will be back later for any remaining questions about wtf happened etc since the QTs and docs are a veritable labyrinth. Will also help supplement existing answers -- even Shapelog is forgetting stuff here and there lol. Just so many moving parts.
Will maybe give some observations about balance hits and misses, which was tough with how dynamic things were trying to adjust so many moving parts. As per disfo we had some PM conversations about that, so I'll let him say his bit first.
For now..
Thanks Shape for hosting and the game format -- first time is a bit experimental but I think the format has promise, if we learn from the lessons of this game and adjust accordingly. ( If anyone will even want to subject themselves to such torture again, lol. )
Thanks Calix for coming up with lots of excellent roles and quest mechanics, basically a large portion of the mechanics heavy lifting. Meanwhile I was mostly doing clerical and org work and otherwise running around like a headless chicken lol.
Thanks Artanis / rels for the assists when you guys got back in.
Thanks players, hope you enjoyed!

Though I really thought he was scum for the post where he did his low activity/excuse thing. I was honestly thinking he would flip red until the very end. Still was kinda like a policy lynch as I absolutely hate him claiming vt over and over again like that. Probably I am a bit of an ass here. I mean at least he didnt nuke himself, though well he kinda did with his posts. Didnt even vote. Which is another thing I really don't like. Calix: He had a quest where he wasn't allowed to talk about PRs/ abilities; claim VT thrice; end the day with no votes on him. That would have given him a vanilla-riser ability (or "vanilla virus" as people were calling it?). Needless to say, he failed the third part hard.

disfo: For some reasons I had a bunch of problems reading Grack and DF. The house of brown thing probably played a huge part in that. That was real mean. Calix: Mean? That's not how you spell "genius" After their HOB discussion, we wanted to lob those three into a chat and then we were like "wait isn't putting three of the most active townies in a chat kinda OP?" and it blossomed from there :D Feel free to complain if you want :p This flash of inspiration happened here: https://www.quicktopic.com/52/H/TV4fddk34mkq/p140.133.1 Some players suspected during the game that we actually made them mafia, and then undid it upon realizing that it was terrible balance... nope! fake mafia was the plan all along ;Þ
disfo: Thanks to the house of brown their N1 filters were not usable to ascertain their alignments. It also greatly affected them D2 as they were super confused. So it def. made all three harder to read. And that put a lot of shade onto like the only 3 towns playing the game (besides me). Like the idea is amazing I am not going to dispute that. It just made the game way harder for town imo. calix: N1 is a legitimate concern as they all thought they were mafia when they were not. However I disagree on D2 onward as you could read into their reactions. You managed to correctly pick up on TT, for example. Maybe it was harder for you since all three of them were town and thus had similar responses. disfo: ... fair point on D2. Just was like... df was acting real strange D2 all of the sudden, but we also managed to figure him out. cakepie: Um, yeah... about that... disfo: he was on a quest? -.- Calix: I think I know why DF was doing that but you'd have to ask post-game to know for sure.
We did troll the HOB a bit more after they realised they weren't a mafia team with this D2 quest but that ended up being a bit more anti-town/ a distraction than we intended it to be (since they didn't really trust each other post-D2 due to some actions they did during N1 and we hadn't accounted for that). I've talked about that in passing in #3360 in response to df, but to elaborate more fully on what happened:- House of Brown fake mafia created N1, planned to be revealed as neighbourhood D2.
- Due to something we picked up in thread about 'fishing' for responses, we created a "fisherman's ring", originally planned to have the item power of "neighbourizer". (This was soon changed because it was too stronk, see below.) There was a pretty cool ritual involved in that the ring would be anonymously presented to the target, and they would have to respond by kissing the ring or not.
- The ring was granted to Grackaroni in his role as "the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost of Brown".
We made up a fake recruitment ability for it: Chez is a "traitor" deep undercover in the city, and the Ring can be used by Grack to prove his identity to recruit Chez. All of this is was part of the fakescumteam deception
- We originally planned to activated the ring's powers at D2, at the same time that we reveal the true role of neighbours.
- Due to the ring being too strong, we decided to change it's ability to ascetic-izer. (ring kissing ritual remained)
- Furthermore, we delayed the ring's activation. On D2, we give tt and df quests to obtain the ring from Grack. Grack's D2 role PM also mentions the ring. When one of tt/df gets the ring, then it is activated. + Show Spoiler +
For me personally, this also serves to reinforce that the HoB dudes are not confirmed to one another, and is a test of HoB's ability to regain their trust in each other.
- Because Grackaroni only talked about "recruitment" during N1 without ever mentioning there was a ring, we had to mention to tt+df that "grack hasn't talked about this item, but it exists!"... this caused some trust/wifom issues
- As far as hosts can tell (let us know if otherwise), Grackaroni probably didn't notice the ring being mentioned in his PMs at all. + Show Spoiler +
He seemed oblivious about the ring on D2. On N2+D3 we gave him a role that needed to give all his items away (which gave df+tt hope) -- Grack gave away everything but the ring at EoD3. We finally decided to drop a ton of bricks on Grack's head and quoted the previous host PMs at him, highlighting the parts about the ring. On D4, Grack intentionally chose to keep the ring for himself... No thanks to Alakaslam's Gollum video. -_-;; This made df+tt even more suspicious that Grack was hiding something...
- df PMed hosts to ask if he could engage in impersonation in the neighbour QT. A snap decision was made to permit this, and tt was also informed as such. In hindsight it is clear that this made the ring quest a lot worse since it caused a lot of distraction over tt and df's alter-egos posting in the QT. Somehow it got to the point where Grack was speculating that Chez or TiTr or hosts were messing around in the QT...
- There was some consideration given to making TT 3p (whether involving the ring or not)... such plans were quickly scrapped when town kept punching itself in the face
tl;dr: Ring side quest got waaaaaaay out of our control.

+ Show Spoiler +note that I wont any of that against you, as running such a game takes a lot of work and balance is fickle. I kinda think you guys overestimated town/underestimated scum. but tbh this town was pretty crap and that stuff is super hard to predict anways, so whatever. still i am feeling like ranting about a bunch of stuff that i observed/think might be a bit borderline.
Was pretty surprised when one of you said he thought chez role would fuck scum over at some point. his role is prolly the only reason he didnt get lynched super early and in a game where town has 0 trust to each other (house of brown) you just give town kp and wathc them kill each other. or themselves. so i am 0 surprised his role was good for scum. but again. this shit is super hard to predict.
general observation: i think it is has very low risk to a very high reward for fakeclaiming stuff in themed games. in palmars game iamp was able to get away with convincing town of being anti town 3P. in dota 2 Hoshi nearly rode out the game off having made up a pro town ability. This game btdt was able to convince town of being a 2 shot cop. though tbh its more that he bussed tt2 super hard.
in dota 2 it was somewhat easier to determine fake claims since the abilities were kinda tied to roles and a rolecop would be able to somewhat determine if someone was lying. a pity he died n1.
I don't know if Chez or BTDT role names would have helped, but for like meacha-cow or the plains dragoon it would be impossible to find out what abilities they had from the name. well. dragoons usually have a horse and a carbine, so you could argue for a vig shot. so not sure how good GB's rolecop ability was.
you maybe could argue that town might to try figure that out based on balance, there were some posts about too many prot/investigatives around, but this is a bastard game, so how the fuck are we supposed to know what ideas you guys had. maybe all the investigatives are insane? which is I basically ignored those posts on the grounds of not wanting mechanics at all to figure out this game. on that note I should not have trusted the red check on GB. but I would have checked GB, too. So the check made sense and the result kinda did too. Also would have had to fight Grack over not trusting the red, while trusting my blue on LS. didnt want to do that.
so that might have been my bad, not sure though. tldr: i think if i am to run a themed in the future I will probably include 1 town fav. role/mechanic that makes fake claims more risky for scum. I dont want to make it stupid/impossible, as good fake claims are good, but I think in the last 3 games it was low risk very high reward.
This one was tackled in depth by me, excerpts follow:
I had a couple thoughts too re "balance" We have to keep in mind this format was kind of experimental But I really think it has some nice potential if executed correctly
I think selling the troll factor and "bastard" nature of the game was a mistake If ever something like this is done again it should be approached in the mindset of like D&D or tabletop gaming. The hosts are like the game masters and will adjust the gameplay on the fly, to provide interesting stuff, make things more dynamic than just preset roles or preplanned power ups, and just a bit of troll for spice and fun.
But the contract should be that we will try to keep balance as much as possible (disclaimer: no promises cuz it's hard to predict what weird unforeseen emergent gameplay might happen) perhaps some limitations on what quackery is allowed/disallowed and what is fair/unfair. NOT what shapelog did going all over the place making a big deal about "anything is possible *trollface*
I kinda think you guys overestimated town/underestimated scum. but tbh this town was pretty crap mafia was quite hilarious too. Tragedy of errors on both sides all game long
Was pretty surprised when one of you said he thought chez role would fuck scum over at some point. I knew all along that it would be a mechanics-based deepwolf if town got obsessed with roles and mechanics. But he was also quite limited in what he could do.
town has 0 trust to each other (house of brown) (already discussed above)
too easy to fakeclaim stuff in themed games. ... good fake claims are good, but I think in the last 3 games it was low risk very high reward. valid observation. worth thinking about how to compensate for this as hosts, and conversely players should also be more cautious about what they believe.
I don't know if role names would have helped nope. once we got past the SoN1 hump and started flavoring shit properly it was completely useless. We gave scum a useless flavor name cop, lol.
how good GB's rolecop ability was. GB wasn't rolecop at all. GB had a vanilla cop power that was essentially useless past N1. GB correctly switched to using nanite milke (combat medic) subsequently. GB's bungled N1 role and action claim caused a big ruckus with LS; it was so painful to watch that we eventually fed LS a clue about it.
but this is a bastard game, so how the fuck are we supposed to know what ideas you guys had should not have sold it as bastard game.

disfo: I was thinking about the carousel but couldnt figure out how to use it for towns advantage. =D
Problem is: I already spend 24/7 overthinking the scum hunt, where should I find time to figure that stuff out too? And tbh I am not too versed in crazy mechanics =D
cakepie: carousel was contributed by Artanis. It is a way to force scum to shoot into ???. Assuming that there's somewhat decent reads in the game. So not sure how helpful it is in this game. Strategy: Towniest and scummiest players board. Compel scummy players to do so by threaten to lynch those who won't comply. Eject the ??? from carousel. Scum can't shoot into carousel for fear of hitting themselves. Town uses scum NK to flip the ??? a bit like a vig by proxy except scum won't shoot scum.

That should cover most of it I think.

On January 15 2017 02:36 disformation wrote: The paper planes were very scum favored, if used right.
They were a one-shot per day, one-way PM. They were tied to weather: - fair weather = delivered normally - fog = message delayed by 12 hours - drizzle = minor obfuscation of message (ink+raindrops, bad combination) - breeze = RNG redirect 35% +/-1 and 15% +/-2 offset from intended recipient - downpour = message lost
Each person gets a different weather each day by RNG; the weather forecast dictates the RNG probabilities for each weather effect on that day.
I don't think one-shot PM is that terribly scum favored. Yes, you're thinking scum can use it to send misleading information out of public eye. But town can also use it to coordinate and share non-public info. It just needs evaluated.
The weather put a twist on things but for the most part fog and drizzle effects did not really do much damage.
Not everyone used it on D2, and only LS used it on D3 and D4.
Of course, that D4 paper plane was game changing >-<;;

On January 15 2017 06:32 Koshi wrote: You people call it a bastard game but it was a really well balanced and fun game. The only bastard part was the obspolls that kinda made it a bit interesting. But town needed it. I beg to differ, the Ouija polls were intended to be balanced around an even mix of
20% scum fabricated result 20% (live+dead) scum votes 30% dead town votes 10% obs votes 20% host votes (which we used for troll and anti-swing)
However, in practice:
In the first poll, scum team completely missed the fact that they had both a fabricated result to send as well as actual votes -- which should hint to them quite clearly that some kind of mixture of results is going to happen. So btdt only submitted a (poorly) manipulated 3,2,1,2,3 result and none of the scum voted. The results turned out to be combination of 25% scum fabricated result 37.5% Koshi 12.5% HtS 25% hosts
In the second poll, scum team failed to send a fabricated result, and only chez sent in a vote. Also there was no obs participation, and deadchat just sheeped Koshi. The results were combination of 28.57% Chez 42.86% Koshi and co. 28.57% hosts

The emergent gameplay is pretty nuts.
At some point in host chat I wrote something along the lines of
slam incorrectly thanks hosts via walkie talkie for the paperplane from LS to disfo getting blown off course by breeze, thus inadvertently radioing it to GB dentures
That was when we realized we had created a monster.
Gotta tell this story properly for those who didn't connect the dots / wouldn't go digging for it:- Calix & I were refining N1 feast item ideas. We crippled the "thermal goggles" + Show Spoiler +
The battery seems to be running low… enough for one night’s use. As long as you still have battery power, you can target one player each night. You will spy on their house, and find out if they were visited by anyone. But you will not learn the identities of any visitors. by giving it only enough battery power for one use. Then I added the "walkie talkie" + Show Spoiler +You turn it on and find that it’s in perfect working condition! Then you feel silly because you only have one walkie talkie and no one to talk to. as semi-troll complementary item that doesn't actually work as communications, but its batteries could be taken out and used in the goggles. + Show Spoiler +Calix be like: what if no one takes the walkie talkie? I was like: just you wait, people love that kind of shit
- ExO gets the walkie talkie, tries using it to no avail (feedback: only empty static)
Meanwhile Alakaslam fails to get the walkie talkie, makes a big fuss in thread.
- thermal goggles are in mafia possession (we expected them to hoard and never use it)
So we add "dentures"+ Show Spoiler +You have some dentures! Surprisingly, they fit! to N2 feast, with hidden function as a passive receiver for the walkie talkie.
- ExO got lynched D2 so when Grack picked up the dentures they did nothing.
- On D3, Grack gets surplus items from feast leftovers and dead players for redistribution. He is also compelled to give away his own stuff. At EoD3/SoN3, walkie talkie goes to Alakaslam, dentures go to GB.
- D4. Alakaslam tries to communicate with the hosts by walkie talkie, which is not what the walkie talkie was intended for. When his in-thread efforts fail, he goes to PMs. This happens:
![[image loading]](https://s23.postimg.org/48808746z/dentures.png) GB responds to hosts by PM + Show Spoiler + which has no effect
- LS sends paper plane to disfo. Each player gets an RNG weather each day based on the weather forecast. LS rolled breeze on D4, so the message was diverted to Alakaslam instead.
- Alakaslam assumes hosts are responding to his walkie talkie calls:
![[image loading]](https://s30.postimg.org/wbwqzj6ep/dentures2.png) "Thank you based alien :D" occurs. Not clear if GB has picked up on "alien" linking the message to Alakaslam or not...
- GB interprets the "intercepted message" as being from scum?LS to scum?disformation; accuses disformation
- disformation mails the fission using the nuke that mafia!inventor Chez gave him.
Side note: + Show Spoiler +crossbow (LS: no ammo) and small spear (btdt) were another pair of complementary items in N1. The flimsy little spear fell apart when btdt tried to stab someone with it, yielding a stupid little pointy stick -- which would have work as crossbow ammo.
