Even this is small if you compare it to the golden years of BW... I often wondered about that. Do we have any official viewer numbers from PL/OSL finals from like 06/07/08? I never saw specifics unfortunately, only anecdotal stuff. Or were you guys simply talking about live attendees? I mean then it's clear, but you have to realize that old BW events were always free to attend, while Riot completely sold out Staples for 50-100$ tickets in one hour. You have to do a bit more of theorycrafting here in my opinion to truly get an idea, instead of just comparing the crowd numbers at face value. If Staples had more space I'm sure a lot more people would attend. All in all I hope the rumours are true that S4 Worlds will be held in Seoul, it would truly be the best thing ever ever ever ever. 2004: 100,000 2005: 120,000 2006: 48,000 2007: 70,000 2008: 30,000 2009: 70,000 There seems to be a misunderstanding. I was asking about viewer numbers So TV ratings + Chinese number or whatever else may have been a relevant number back in the day. I would have guessed it to be at least 2-3 Million or something, but I have 0 actual numbers whatsoever for that, unfortunately. That's what I was trying to give you albeit I gave you approximates for national television. I know TeamLiquid has published those statistics a few times for the Finals as well.
Oh I didn't even see your comment, whoops. Yeah, seems hard to estimate. Montecristo on LO3 said that 3 Million peak concurrent for the Finals would be a "very safe bet", so it could be possible to rival whatever numbers they had back then, albeit with the whole global audience in this case, so there's still immense room.
One thing I often tend to dislike is how people nowadays tend to talk about these events (Worlds, TI) as like the biggest thing ever to happen in esports, as if BW never existed. But whatever, I suppose it's mainly due to enthusiasm and I can't blame anyone for that.

It's just because it happened in Korea and most people aren't familiar with those times. Sure, a few of them might have tried BW but they never really got into the game or knew about the scene. Unless you knew about communities like this then you really had no idea what was happening. Sure there were other websites like gosugamers, wgtour, pgtour but TL was pretty much your go-to page for information on the Korean scene if you were living outside of Korea.
Okay, after getting more accustomed to the search (I never had to use the drop down window to find certain stuff).. I did manage to get some interesting tidbits:
Mind you this is just some figures for the Ever 2009 OSL Final between Flash and Movie.

The only official numbers I can find are for the Grand Finals of the 2008~2009 Shinhan ProLeague, which had around 2,934,370 viewers watching it. So your estimation of 2~3 million viewers for a random ProLeague Grand Finals would be more or less correct. However, considering the viewership for that particular finals doesn't even cut it into the top twenty most viewed event in history, the legendary numbers from competitions such as the So1 StarLeague would most likely be quite higher than that.

so good

I saw that on Hai's stream lmao.

I think the biggest draw in Korea would end up being SKT vs CJ Blaze. KT B is a major name, but doesn't have the same following as the CJ teams in Korea.

SKT versus whatever team Madlife is on*

I'm going to wake up at 5am or so (UK time) and be able to watch most of it. Someone has to suffer, this time round it's Europe, but even then not too badly. Plus the Korean GP qualifying is on from 6am UK time that I was going to watch anyway. You just have to put in some dedication and remember the actual games won't start straight away because they will do lots of intro stuff, and then 10 minutes for picks and bans/etc after that.

Come on, I have to get up at 5 in the morning too, but you have to realize that it's standard west coast prime time for sporting events. That's just how the world works... Also they'd be dumb to screw over all of Asia, with 2 Asian teams in the finals and all.

You guys probably have around 30-40 minutes before the actual games begin.
|
Its even better with the Youtube stream. you can start watching around 6 am and incase you missed part of game 1 you can still go back and watch it and use the break between game 1-2 to catch back up.

Not only that, but the youtube stream always seems to behind the rest as well. ;3

Dude, gotta wake up! Show that dedication to the game.
I used to wake up at like, 4:30 for OSL BW matches... the days *reminisces*.

Royal wins Game 1 and 4. SKT takes 2, 3 and 5.

I'm just going to stay up all day and night until the finals. I've done it before for other games(SC2) and I don't see a reason not to do it here.

There are 8 hours between California to England to Korea. There is literally no way they could satisfy everyone and they picked NA + Asia.
If you wanted to be prioritized, should've won All Stars

Also if you skip the first couple of games and, if we are lucky, it goes to 5 games then you can just tune in around 7am and watch most of it anyway.
