At any point of IEM Kiev, if you think of an interesting byline, please drop a sentence in the Pro Scene thread. (e.g. "Day 2: M5 hype was everything people expected") At the end of the month, I'll catalogue the results of Kiev but also any interesting facts or events that happen over the course of the tournament. Thanks. Neo, 20.1.2012 |

Otherwise chaox/xpecial and odd one are pretty solid and will do what they do not overplay or underplay.
This is why they are a solid team, they don't have to many random factors they have to bank off of.
Also in the defence of rain man;
In general rain man is a great tourney presence (see mlg providence between his solo top play) but his solo queue can be pretty trashy. That's one of the main things I like about TSM - the consistency of their teamwork. And I believe they're one of the team with the most stable lineup. A lot of teams have had players come and go while TSM is just Rain Man, TOO, Regi, Chaox, and Xpecial. I think the last time they had a change in their lineup was Westrice and that was part way through season 1.
Me too. While they are immature, I really commend their team spirit a lot of times. They may flame each other, but it's nowhere on the same level as CLG. And Regi has expressed numerous times how he's more willing to work with what he's got even if it's not working out currently. That's a good attitude to have.
I also don't know why people compare solo queue play to tournament play. Especially for a position like solo top. There are so many non-existent factors at solo top for solo queue. AFK farm top and have enemy jungler babysit you? Ok, they lose position everywhere else. Your TP actually means something. Having a jungle that can actually communicate (and gank properly) and help you out is huge. etc. etc.

It's just that many people believe that Rain man is super bad/trashy; and ierno his attitude oozes that but only when he's on stream.. it's crazy he's like a different person when he's super focused.. I give him much respect in that department and i've always wondered why they don't switch dyrus with trm... but i understand more and more each tourney (that tsm's serious in) the consistency and continuity really make TSM great as Jbright and jaco have noted.

Just posting to say hello from Kiev, Daniel pointed me in this direction and it appears you guys are all enjoying the show.
I'll make sure to keep reading through the day, feel free to point out any improvements you feel could be made. First days at events can always have issues but so far things went ok.
Edit: Wow I just noticed I joined in 2008 and this is my first post, wow I am a lurker! I must have joined here back when I covered TLO in Supcom and he told me to do it!

I'm pretty sure that RainMan just plays a LOT better in tournaments than in solo queue or even scrims. To agree with what someone else has said.
TSM is also finally taking tournaments super seriously. I think that was one of the main problems for a while, and one of the main problems with their scrimming too. Their very first game against curse they raced through bans and picks, so they'd obvious sat and figured out their plans for the games today.

I love how all the polls are NO...Were the games really that bad ^_^
|
Its basically the reason Neo and I were laughing at anyone who sugestend that TSM wasnt the favorite going into this tournament. There is a REASON that they were at past IEMs and placed very well there.
Scrims dont mean shit because there is nothing on the line, most of the time teams are messing around with new strats, and realistically there is nothing to stop players from going full retard.
Rainman has proven time and again he is probably the most consistent tourney top laner. Chaox and Xpecial are the best bottom lane in the world, hands down, and on point (read non retard) regi is the best NA ap player, and quite possibly the best in the world.
|
I don't know why everyone hates on TRM's solo queue attitude. It's better than Regi's, and much better than HSGG's (and most of CLG for that matter -- except DL). He talks trash but laughs about it most time instead of PMSing live on camera like HSGG.
Sure he can get sour, but people worship and actually tune into HSGG's stream to see him do much worse. And HSGG messes his team up a lot as well. Ok, he got a clutch baron steal with Nidalee a few weeks ago so that's going to keep the hype up for a little while longer until the does one more clutch thing. Until then, let's all forgive his massive misgivings. Rinse and repeat -_-

I was going to say this as well. But was afraid of the HSGG fanboy lashback :-/
If you let Rainman AFK farm top, it's ridiculous how much control he gives in many aspects. Jungler / Mid come to stop him from stealing twin golems and dancing around between towers as Singed? Ok, Dragon is gone. Gank-Counter Gank-shitfest occuring at bot. Rainman TP to save the day. etc. etc.
It's also amazing to see how well they boost each other. The whole trash bag thing, as dumb as it sounds, is very effective it seems. Even if it's just to get them to play Solo Queue all day and practice mechanics. The discussions they have with each other sitting side-by-side are immensely helpful to them, as well as a great learning experience to viewers.

I found them all pretty boring and you could probably sum up the amazing plays the camera people didnt miss in 3 minutes. There was just too much difference in team strength. TSM very solid, SK not taking it too seriously and having roster changes, poor curse having a literal last minute sub. The other team i have never heard of :D.
|
So if I wanted to watch one game because I have time, which is the least bad? SK versus TSM is the obvious answer since it has a few YES votes, but the VoD isn't up yet

I remember those days!
Only thing that bothered me about today was the lack of cameras on the players. Sometimes a nice touch to have a glance at the players while the game is setting up, or while they are celebrating after a win. It kind of lacked the LAN feel, felt more like just an online tournament apart from the interviews.
Really enjoyed the casting though, as always Leigh!

Good to see shoutcasters even read forums which are not mainly focused around LoL. I guess because he have a pretty mature forum compared to most LoL forums. :o

Edit: Wow I just noticed I joined in 2008 and this is my first post, wow I am a lurker! I must have joined here back when I covered TLO in Supcom and he told me to do it! Hi Deman! Great to have more of the shoutcasters on board here on TL. Alright then, a few things from me.
1) Channel your inner Korean. The commentary so far has been good, and there's good chemistry between the shoutcasters. The educational value is also much greater than is was last year. However, sometimes when something big happens, I just don't feel as excited as I should be. When some absolutely nuts happens (say, a massive Kennen Ult at an important fight or a Baron Steal), I want to feel pumped. I want to feel like the sky is about to fall. The most obvious example of the Korean Commentator spirit is the Playguuuuuu!! meme. These are things fans really remember and talk about long after the event has happened. When we see game changing plays, we need to feel excited when it happens. Commentary is no different from watching a replay without the entertainment value that fires you up. Fiery commentary gives you that feeling you're actually there live at a big event and something dramatic is happening, even if you're just yelling at your computer screen on your sofa.
2) Interviews need to be more focused. I noticed that there's a lot of redundant questions being asked like: "Do you have any special plans for your next match?" Realistically, you're probably not going to get a good answer and asking it because it's a tradition doesn't seem right. Interviews with the players are a really unique opportunity to get some good commentary or opinions from them that fans don't normally get. It would be really great to get some direct and specific questions where we see some high level player thought process. I noticed players were always more willing to talk about other teams than themselves or the games they played. Some questions that would open a lot of discussion and dissuade one word answers (hi SYDTKO) could be things like: "TheOddOne is one of the lynch-pins for TSM with his jungle pressure. But not all teams are able to emulate that. What do you think TheOddOne does that's different from other junglers and gives him that extra edge?"
3) Give shoutouts to TeamLiquid I guarantee you we will love you even more if you do this.
4) During downtimes, it'd be nice to get to learn about our shoutcasters. Shoutcasters are personalities, and people are drawn to personalities. So, let's learn more about you, JoeJoe MillerMiller and the rest of the crew! How did you get into LoL? Who loves (or hates) Teemo the most? Who are some of the production crew we should know about and how hard do they feed? Casters are more engaging when you feel like they're one of us. (See: Day9, Tastosis, etc.) They don't just have good chemistry and insight, but make a much more personal connection with the viewer. Now that LoL casting is getting better and better, I think it's a good time and take that next step of further developing that connection with viewers.
5) The stream quality only goes to medium at the most. I'm not sure if this is venue or broadcaster related, but the highest option available is only 450p. It makes watching at full screen a bit hard because details like the summary HUD at the bottom can be blurry to read at time (e.g. continuing minion kills), or the game timer at the top (Is that an 8 or a 9?). It would be great to get some HD streams, although arguably the LoL Community is very spoilt by having had free HD streams nearly all the time compared to, say, MLG HD which requires subscription.
6) E-Sports Shoutouts! This is something that's come up in SC2 a bit and I think it's relevant here. If you have any extra time (say, games finish early) talk about how people can support E-Sports. Tell people to contact sponsors (Team and ESL) to thank them for their commitment and tell them how much we/she/he/it appreciate their sponsorship. Tell people to contact their favourite teams and say "Good Job" because it'll mean a lot to them. InControl wrote a great post about this kind of engagement and it'd be great to see similar things in the LoL Scene.
That's all from me then. Keep up the good work!

That is the free stream, there is a higher quality stream you need a subscription for. As that is quite cheap but nearly noone buys it, I think its fair to say that the free stream quality is still so high that it makes noone buy the premium stream.

TSM rips hard. Just goes to show that scrims mean jack squat. They are for fleshing out strats, seeing what works and what doesn't nothing more.
|
I would second the playgu point. tf's get crazy and I've never seen a caster be able to explain whats going on it the middle of one so just get loud and make it hype.
Everything else that chi said (great post btw) is true. I thought it was pretty good when they where talking about vodka being cheaper then water and joe joe miller miller.
