I explained what his skills do because it's something unique he can do that others (specifically assassins) cannot.
Also a good veigar can land his stun instantly if aimed properly, which is not at all predictable?
In particular these are things that help a lot late game (of course... they help mid game too. It's not like these are particularly better late game then the mid game.)
Edit: Not trying to say that veigar is the bestest late game hero of all time, but to say he is one of the worst is just hyperbole.

I have all minus Curling Veigar, and that's actually my least favorite of all his skins haha.
Greybeard was my first love, but then they released both Baron von Veigar (giant glove!) and Superb Villain (dat hat) which were were both awesome. White Mage was legit since it actually looks quite nice in game. And then Bad Santa came along which was just amazing.
I really like all the Veigar skins, Leprechaun is the one that never made a deep impression on me compared to the other ones though.
WTB Balrog Chogath skin so we can have Veigar Greybeard faceoff :O

I don't think he is THAT bad late game. If you can use your stun as a peel/zone control type spell to separate a team so you can burn down someone he can be effective because he does a good bit of dmg even to tanks. Plus controlling a large portion of space in a fight can be huge.
However like Sheep says there are just better options out there in the AP meta right now, he isn't "garbage" but simply doesn't fit quite well in how the game plays out now. Doesn't mean a team can't design a comp/strat that he would work well in, but no one is doing it.
He might work well in a comp that has another aoe cc champ in it (like Sej).

Daggers, I want that rammus skin, but not any of the others. Stupid bundles.

AP/AD Mids that I would rather have over Veigar when everyone is at 6 items:
Ryze Orianna Karthus Zed Jayce Khazix Swain Ziggs Anivia Twisted Fate Vladimir Lux Lissandra Kogmaw (AP) Fizz Cassiopeia Diana Galio Kassadin Kayle
Comparable/situational Brand Malzahar Xerath Syndra Gragas
Prefer Veigar Annie Zilean Leblanc Talon Pantheon
It's rough, I might've missed some people, it's my opinion but here's the general gist.
Some of it obviously depends on specific team comps, but overall, there are very few champs I'd take Veigar over from a similar position. And note that most of the ones I'd prefer Veigar over have insanely strong early/mid game utility/strength too, meaning it is easier for them to snowball an early advantage. The Prefer Veigar section is basically filled with early game assassins who will destroy Veigar lol.

And Zilean has way more utility at all stages of the game. Dat ulti.
Not to mention the bad matchups in the rest of the sections.
EDIT: I suppose you could always use the Lord Mordekaiser skin instead. :o
But I really don't want to play Veigar vs Morde. Ugh, so painful.

Can probably stick Zilean into the situational category, but yeah, Zilean amazing utility, 6 items of farm might be a tad wasted on him which is why I stuck him int he prefer Veigar category.

There's nothing to say that the 6 items need to be AP. :o
To move this topic away from Veigar though, what's everyone's thoughts of Mikael's? I've been getting it alot of Nami, because spell spam is niceeeeee (and I run all GP10 anyways, even in yellows, so I have the golds).

That random AP ratio. It seems Riot really wants Triforce to be mandatory on him.

In which case you might as well play Zilean support and assume he got 6 items which wouldn't put him in competition with Veigar, since we're just taking a silly little exercising of a what-if scenario anyways.
Also I'm prejudiced against Zilean because back in the day there was a period when all CLG do was spam Zilean mid and be absolutely useless with him most of the time, times have probably changed.

Comparing Veigar to assassins and saying he's more practical to use lategame is a bit silly, seeing as most Assassins tend to not be fantastic lategame teamfighters to begin with.
Especially since a large number of those assassins are also very good at split-pushing lategame, which cannot also be said of Veigar.

I actually kind of like Veigar's split pushing actually haha, that's one of his late game merits. He's still a threatening 1v1 since it comes down to a game of positioning, warding, and who gets the first move. AP sclaing means his tower pushing is decent, and W waveclear is solid. Grab a TP on him and you're good to go imo. Situational for sure since often you want ignite in lane, but again, in our silly hypothetical late game scenario Veigar's split push is well within acceptable territory imo.

Yeah, but it was painful to watch until they finally figured that out, where jiji would be running around with 300 farm and 5 items and still do nothing come late game.

There's always Lich Bane as well (though it's crowding out a defensive item).

Since it didn't gain any traction in the Vi thread, what do people think about AS/Armor/MR/ArPen? Stole the idea from TOO's Nocturne setup. You get your AS while giving solid amounts of penetration.
