Straight from the LoL board leaders, I've got some bad news for anyone here playing this game through the Mac client:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the past 13 months we have been working with another company on a Mac version of LoL. We have been silent because both companies have been exploring every possible avenue to ensure the Mac version is up to Riot standards. So far we have been unable to ensure a consistent quality bar across platforms. At the heart of the issue is our rapid update cycle, where we make regular balance changes and content updates. We currently develop on the PC, but since the plan was for the Mac to share servers, we believed that a Mac version that was frequently unavailable was not up to Riot standards. For that reason we have severely limited the number of participants in Mac testing.
We are regretfully going to shut down the Mac Beta client indefinitely starting 12:00 AM PT on September 6, 2011. We realize our current approach regarding the Mac platform won't guarantee the quality and frequent updates we deliver today on the PC and are expected by our player community. We will continue to investigate the opportunity to provide player access on the Mac Platform in the future that aligns with our service and content update standards. We are committed to building a solution that will work on the Mac in the long run, but it will take some time. Additionally, testers that have utilized the League of Legends store during the Beta can either continue playing the PC version of the game, or receive a full refund on RP purchases made (which would close out the account). Details of the refund program will be communicated to these players via email. As a result of this situation, Riot would like to give all active participants in the Mac beta a code that unlocks the Champions Pack, as a token of appreciation for the time they have dedicated to helping us evaluate the Mac client and our sincere apology for not being able to have the testing work out as originally planned. To qualify for the reward, you must have a majority of your logins come from the Mac client, and you must login to the Mac client and click on the Store button between Friday, September 2 and Tuesday, September 6. Rewards will be added to the accounts of verified testers by the end of September.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm glad to see that they're giving the option for a full refund on any RP spent, that's responsible of them. So while I posted this more to make sure everyone was aware who might be affected, what do you think? Will it affect your playing of LoL?

Wow, fuck this. I just have a MacBook to play on, now I cannot play LoL anymore without getting Parallels or Bootcamp.
Trash.

Can't ppl just use bootcamp instead?

all active participants in the Mac beta a code that unlocks the Champions Pack
I wished I bothered to play on Mac client. That is all.

I don't understand, the client was perfectly playable. Can't they just restrict access to Dominion, which I assume is what broke it?

you can technically, but A) you're supposed to own windows to bootcamp it, and B) restarting ur mac JUST to play some LoL is annoying to say the least. If LoL was mac only and you were forced to restart your windows machine every time you wanted to play, you either wouldnt do it or would hate it amirite? same idea but turn it backwards
As far as the loss of the mac client itself, i cant say i'm terribly suprised, they way they run it (using a cider wrapper) makes it prone to quite a few unique bugs, and very poor performance even on fairly high end mac machines. (note the following is based on a somewhat limited understanding, but i think parts of it are def true) If they really wanted to make a mac client work too, they'd have to rebuild the entire architecture on something unix based, which is a huge task and something i'm 99% certain they are not interested in doing even within the next few years. My guess is that if they DO end up doing mac support, it will be in LoL 2.

Hi guys. I understand that for many of you who use a Mac to play LoL this is a major issue you for all. I'm a little busy right now, but I will make a post in our Teach Support Thread will as much detail as I can on this issue. I'll also put in some help on how to get the Windows LoL Client working on your Mac.
The Tech Support Thread is here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=243201
Most likely it will be a new post at the end of the thread rather than something on the first few posts since I'm a little pressed for time.
Thanks for your understanding, and I'm really sorry that the Mac Client is being terminated.

i mean you didn't buy your mac to play games on right other games have mac support but it's not a piece of cake to keep the client up.. the majority of players are windows users and if they have to take it down for a while, then so be it
|
I wasn't in the actual beta, I downloaded the client through some other site and it worked fine, no bugs at all and the updates worked well. Does this mean that I won't be able to play, even though i wasn't in the actual beta?
|
Its pretty good for me since they are giving out a champions pack to all mac users and im getting a new comp soon anyway so i will still be able to play with more free champions =D

i don't understand how a company with that large of a player base still doesn't have official mac support yet. i understand that the majority of gamers are PC users, but almost all the big games out there have OSX support... riot just not really on top of things, imo.

They can't code it for mac support because of the way the game is built i believe. It is simply to hard. Riot is behind things yes, but support for mac is not big for pretty much all big name developers, and i know that blizzard is the exception.

I'm both sad and annoyed.
Sad because of this I'm no longer able to play a game I love with my buddies and annoyed because a lot of the mac community doesn't even use the official riot client (which Riot hasn't supported in 6ish months) anymore as a group of super guys made their own after they got tired of dealing with the bad riot one and instead of just continuing their apathy towards our community instead they are actually just refusing us access to their log-in server if you're on a mac.

Short of Boom pulling a last second miracle with a wineskin or the client team (Edwir, YSfighter,Riddick, syitch and so on) managing to juryrig yet another client that gets around the new roadblocks riots putting in there isn't any solutions.
For various business related reasons I can't have pirated stuff on my laptop and I can't afford to pay for a legit copy of Windows 7 or Parallels/VMFusion.
