At that point, with Kassadin's Q, the 20 mpen from haunting guise is going to be worth about 67 ap, and when you add in the 25 ap from the item itself, that's worth 92 ap. The effect is only going to increase the more ap you get because the dmg increase you get from mpen is %-based so if you have 500 ap total, the increase is going to be worth more like 160-180 ap instead of the 67 ap. If they have more mres the effect is naturally going to be smaller, but it won't be significant until they have like FoN or 2 negatrons. In short: Haunting Guise is amazing. from there i make rylai, NLR -> deathcap, HTR -> HTGB how reasonable would it be to stop making rylai after GB, then build deathcap before finishing rylai? or sneak a haunting guise in there? i'm looking to boost my killing power between when i get the giant's belt (which greatly helps me survive) and when i finish deathcap (the point wherein i am fucking terrifying) should i just focus on farming better, or is there wiggle room in my build for other items? what are some situational positive items for kat when i can't freefarm between belt and deathcap & have to rely on open lanes with towers down or kills to generate gold? | ||

One has a long range poke, a ranged attack, a heal + attackspeed boost and at level 6 a powerful set of melee range nukes. The other has a blink on medium-high cooldown, a melee attack, a heal dependent on killing/critting creeps (requires being in melee range to attack them), and at level 6 can not die for 5 seconds. You aren't gonna win it by yourself unless the Nid is pretty bad, that's for sure. | ||

Are you going against squishy targets such as MF/Lux? Going pure AP is not a bad choice. Are you going against tanky Team Demacia aka Jaran/Garen? Going for more of a tanky build will make your life easier. Is everyone getting merc treads? Haunting Guise would lower that MR they get. Are you just plain feeding? Build pure tank. Now they have to go though 2500+ HP just to kill you when your only worth 90 gold. Of course there are core key items that you feel that you must need depending on your play style. It might be ryials for an AP carry like Kat, Iedge for a ranged carry like Tristana, and so on. With these key items that you feel that you cant live without, setting a timeframe for when you get that key item will guide you the right way. For a carry like Tristana/MF, a 21 min Iedge rush is considered standard. By using these timings You can also gauge how far ahead or behind you are in the game. The more ahead you are the more you can also stick more items in your item order. Likewise, the more behind you are, depending on the situation, you either (in the case of feeding) play smarter/defensively/buy more defensive items (aka Uta buying 2 chain vests on Kass) or (the case of lower cs/kills) cut some items that you usually get (aka stacking doran's or upgrading boots) to meet that timing. Items are for the most part situational but by knowing what to get at which time is best will give you the most bang for your gold per 5. | ||

edit: even if i'm behind, building pure tank on kat would be totally foolish. my job with the champion is pretty linear - when the ccs are gone, i kill everyone. the rylai's in my build keeps me alive through that. if i were to build pure tank from there, yes i'd be harder to kill, but as my opponent's team gets stronger i lose relevance because i've failed in my primary role and now my team is without a significant portion of damage. likewise, i seem to do more damage with rylais + deathcap than with rylais + htgb, which is why i build the gunblade later | ||
