Big G's games are becoming disturbingly similar to mine. It seems since this game doesn't have a learning curve or barrier of entry it is everyone's first MOBA and there are so many stupid mistakes being made left and right by people that then lead to them flaming the team.

These issues won't improve until the Blizzard matchmaker actually starts matching players of similar ranks/mmr.

After some time in queue the matchmaking stops trying to find people that matches your mmr, i still hope the system will work with a bigger player base and find nice matches fast, but who knows. Right now the queue times can get long and you find bad matches anyway, but i dunno if its caused by the small player base or if the system is bad.
In PvZ the zerg can make the situation spire out of control but protoss can adept to the situation.

Well, as I complained about quite a bit previously in the thread, there did not seem to be matchmaking problems like these at the end of alpha, which is why I have my doubts that it is a numbers issue.

I've got another theory, alpha players were better. Since the invites were so scarse way less new people entered the game, and didn't enter it as frequently, that gave new people the time to lear and get better. Now that invites are so frequent, there are lots of new players, the problem is they frequently play with other new players with a veteran here abs there. This ends up inflating the MMR of some, but they aren't actually playing better, because they are just playing with other bad people. My guess is when you play right now most of them have one month playing the game, at most two. Whereas in the alpha most of your party had the chance to be playing sonce, april last year, or at least October after the wipe.

I have no doubt that Alpha players were better on average, and I'd expect as such. The issue is why Alpha players (and the good Beta players) are routinely being matched up with complete newbs -- even in hero league. I had a game last night where my team had 3 masters/diamond players (2 rank 1's and a rank 4) and then 2 bronze players (both rank 48). And believe me, it showed that the two bronze players were bronze players. They definitely earned it. It was literally a 3v5 game. Matchmaking like that never happened Alpha. It is routine in Beta.

The point is that it will take some time for the MMR's to rebalance. Even the lowest MMR players were pretty good in the alpha. Now you have an influx of new people with the same or similar MMR as these lowest alpha players, but they have far less skill. These people will all get matched together until the alpha players can slowly separate themselves from the pack. But meanwhile the newer players win some matches too, so they'll go up also. It's just going to always take a while to get the proper tiers set up again if you're only going to soloQ.

The issue seems to be the match maker tries to make it so something like Team1's sum MMR == Team2's sum MMR. So if me, Daunt and Phantom queue up and we're decent so lets say our MMR is 1000 each. We get matched with a team with an average MMR of 800. Not as good as us individually but not terrible. So their sum MMR is 4k. Our MMR together is 3k so it has to fill in the ranks with two 500 MMR players -- or about half as good as each of us. Like I've said in this thread before good players can lead games and sometimes win but you can't carry two dead weights in this game. So they are a team of average players against a team of 3 good and 2 bad. And the team of average players will win that.

Possibly with more people and with a better system it could make it so it tries to find you better matches and refuses to allow you to get filled with players within a certain MMR discrepancy range

It is really, really hard to carry teams with catastrophically bad players on them because it is so hard to fight shorthanded. If you aren't able to force the other team to make mistakes and put them in positions where they are often shorthanded, you're probably going to lose. Even then, it only takes one mistake in the end game to cost your team the game -- even if you have a huge lead. In the game that I described above, I was playing as Uther and the other two players were Tychus and Muradin. We were lucky that we had the core functions of the team covered. We won most of the teamfights despite having a dipshit Zeratul and constantly split-pushing Zagara (I think I interrupted the enemy ETC's ult like 3-4 times), and still almost lost at the very end because our two newbs continued to screw up.

It seems like you can take good engagements and get a lead early with some bad players on the team but eventually when those harder hitting talents start to kick in you need all 5 people to be performing their roles correctly or you'll lose out in the end

I have lost so many games after winning the race to lvl 10 that it's not even funny. Yesterday we had a big lead on Dragon Shire, but our Tychus did nothing but split push (at least I learned that the laser can outrange a keep...)

So of course we lost, he would constantly go it alone and get ganked, our Diablo after starting off well ended up doing nothing late game too (enemy had a Diablo too, so just comparing the two was frustrating).

In hindsight we got our early lead because two of their players had connection issues and once those were cleared up our poor team just gave the game back to them.

While I agree with you, there's definitely something going on with the match maker though. I'm in the mid-40's for Hero League and the estimated queue time hit 4 minutes yesterday. I think people are scared off of Hero League right now, either cuz of poor MMR or angry players. Kind of shows you what happens when you release something before it's ready?

Personally, when I started in December I was often the newbie on the team. So I had a huge opportunity to learn by seeing people play the maps properly and pinging around (also seeing what happens when people land their skill shots =p). If you play with a bunch of scrubs then sure you'll win as it's a fair match, but what do you really learn? It's the same issue that people who play Co-op will have when they wonder why they keep missing skill shots or what not in a quick match. For those of us lucky enough to be bought into Heros in smaller proportion to the existing player base that was a great time to learn.

But back to Hero League, I wonder if it's a cause-and-effect issue. When Beta started a small group of players were already lvl 30, that causes havoc with the match maker. Then they get joined by a bunch of Beta players, that causes more havoc with misleading MMR's which 'fixes' the match maker but ruins the experience for others? I don't know, just thinking out loud here.

i do think that rank means nothing to matchmaking, but their internal MMR. Most of the time, i get games with people +-500 my MMR on hotslogs, rarely i will get people below that tresshold and more often than not, most are closer to my MMR (3.3k) at hero league. Mind you, i am rank 37. So the ranking system is quite funky since i mostly play and get matched with people from ranks 3-20.

I do think the problem is in their hidden MMR itself, and how it's incapable of good matchings short term for players who are accessing to hero league.
