On October 09 2022 21:10 {CC}StealthBlue wrote: Germany to transfer Tanks to Ukraine but from Greece and Slovakia. Ice starting to Crack? Who knows. But it seems this detail was left out till the last moment. I guess because said countries are meant to get new Tanks from somewhere else.
I think that is just re-reporting the deals germany struck with those countries, providing them with leopards from industry stock in exchange for soviet equipment (IVFs from the BMP line iirc). Given that I could not find anything in german during a quick search, my assumption is its that + a failed translation. The german word for IFV has 'tank' in it, and occacionally people shorten it to just tank. They also seem to reference the statement from about a week ago where the delivery of IRIS-T was assured, there was no change in stance on the delivery of tanks during that statement.
Nexta is not exactly a reliable source, they are a bit hit or miss, so take everything they say with a grain of salt, especially if no source is linked. I have even seen tweets where their source did not support their claim in the tweet, or it would have been a far stretch. They did not have a major mishap in that regard as of yet I think, but I don't think you should trust in them as your only source.
EDIT: Here is an example of a german news article that can be very confusing if you just read the headline and bolded summary via google translate: www.n-tv.de. You would be left thinking that ukraine is to receive tanks soon from greece. If you skim the article, you could still have that impression, given there is this quote from lambrecht in it The first tanks can then be delivered from Greece to Ukraine very quickly + Show Spoiler +Die ersten Panzer können dann sehr schnell aus Griechenland in die Ukraine geliefert werden
But what she is referring to is the 40 BMP-1 "Schützenpanzer" (IFVs). The same section clarifies that, but for me it is very easy to see how articles like this can get misinterpreted if not read with enough caution.

The IRIS system is a big deal though, absolutely state of the art in 2005, more than enough for everything the Russian air force might throw at them. But also just delivering on a promise from early june.
Watched a Bundeswehr interview today, where there was a lot of praise and admiration for Ukraines military again. One point was that they are way better in making use of the new euipment than anyone could have expected. I sometimes think Ukraines military is too successful for its own good. Fear of overescalation holding the western countries back from giving more military support.
Edit: Russia announced train traffic over the Kerch bridge has resumed in both directions with regular passenger trains to start later today as well. Business as usual, EVERYTHING IS FINE! /s

The thing with the IRIS-T was that its not like we gave away a system of our own, germany doesn't have any at the moment. It was a system that was already purchased by someone else, so some sort of deal / alteration to the contract with the original buyer had to be made first. I am also not 100% sure if the system was ready in july. But it is a pretty good system indeed, and will also very hard for russia to deal with / disable since its a dispersed system.
To avoid confusion, what is referred to in the news as IRIS-T is actually IRIS-T SLM or SLS. IRIS-T is the name of an anti air rocket that is used by the system afaik, and that is already in use by the german airforce. What ukraine is getting is the system IRIS-T, not just the IRIS-T rocket.

Kiyv got struck by one or more missiles about an hour ago. Some deaths and injuries. Not a military target, the strike was aimed randomly. According to BBC this missile attack is the first in many months.
|
Reportedly most of the major cities were targeted: Dnipro, Lviv, Tarnopol, Kyiv, Zhytomyr...
|
The regime who called the Kerch bridge attack 'terrorism' because it 'targeted civilian infrastructure' is now once again aiming missiles at civilians.
Anybody else shocked?

I am absolutely shocked that a regime well known for its respect for civilian lives, and without any history of hypocrisy, would behave in such a way!

They did the same thing in Chechnya, Georgia and Afghanistan. In general Russian army isn't known for its humanitarian traits and their method of waging war is quite far from modern standards.

Apparently they chose to target the Klitschko bridge in Kyiv with a missile... a pedestrian bridge. And it was a near miss so it's still standing

That would be a very big explosion for an anti air missile dud. The bridge is very high in the air and the explosion goes a lot higher than that still. That's a big payload.
That EU building is indeed the nearest building. Though missing by 80 meters is not exactly great accuracy if true.

Information on strikes on the UA energy infrastracture from RU OSINT. Acronyms: CHPP - Combined Heat and Power Plant (which generates not only electricity, but also a centralized heating for the population, in USSR they were often combined). SS - Substation TPP - Thermal Power Plant + Show Spoiler +To date, Rybar's team has managed to confirm the following strikes:
▪️Kyiv: Kyiv CHPP-3, Kyiv CHPP-5, Substation 110 Vokzalnaya, Darnytska CHPP — there are massive hits.
But no strikes were recorded at the Brovary SS, Severnaya SS and Kyiv CHPP-6. Either they were not included in the list of targets, or the Ukrainian air defense systems partially worked.
▪️Rivne: Substation Rivne 330 kV - a hit on the object caused an overload of 110 kV substations and a power outage in the city.
▪️Khmelnitsky: Substation Khmelnitskaya 330/110 kV - since there is no electricity in the whole city, only the 330 kV substation could be affected, which provoked shutdowns of the Rakovo, Stara, Thermoplast, Ozernaya, Dubovo substations and the Grechany traction substation.
▪️Ternopil: Substation Ternopil 330/110/35 kV - there is no electricity in the whole city, substation 110 kV Zagreblya, Ternopil supporting, Galician, Promyshlennaya, Plotycha, reinforced concrete production plant are powered from it.
▪️Sumy: Substation 330kV Konotop - the hit caused power outages in the entire region.
Kharkiv: there is no electricity, water, communications in the whole city, the metro has stopped.
This may mean the simultaneous decommissioning of the substation Zalyutino, Kharkovskaya, Losevo, as well as Kharkovskaya CHPP-5, Zmievskaya TPP, Chuguevskaya CHPP-2. But due to the lack of communications in the region, it is not yet possible to confirm the decommissioning of all facilities.
▪️Kryvyi Rih: Kryvyi Rih TPP, one of the largest in Ukraine.
▪️Zhytomyr: Substation Zhytomyr 330/110 kV
▪️Lviv: Lviv CHPP-1
▪️Ivano-Frankivsk: Burshtynska TPP
▪️Vinnytsia: train delays are recorded, which may be evidence of the failure of individual traction substations. But there is no information about this in open sources.
Also Putin made a short speech to RU Security Council where he officially called these strikes as a retaliation for Crimea Bridge and said that more will follow if Russian infrastracture would be attacked. https://tass.ru/politika/16005709

Russian infrastructure. On Ukrainian territory. Currently being used in a war of aggression against Ukraine.
But sure, committing war crimes sounds like a sensible reaction to that.

Ukraine retaliates after missile strikes from Russia:
Oct 10 (Reuters) - A loud explosion was heard on Monday morning in Russia's Belgorod region, close to the border with Ukraine, two witnesses told Reuters.
The witnesses reported a loud bang and windows shaking.
Russia's RIA Novosti news agency cited local officials as saying the blast was caused by explosions of ammunition at a landfill site.
Belgorod region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that in a separate incident, Ukrainian forces fired on border villages on Monday.

Does Ukraine have the capability or desire to attack Belarus right now?
|
Probably no even though it would be justified. Russian false flag attack to create an excuse for direct Belarusian involvement is more likely. I don't think Lukashenko wants to get involved, it would be unprofitable for Belarus, but it's not like we have reasons to expect Russia and her mini-me to behave like rational actors.
|
Following some OSINT sources and it appears hundreds of Belarusian tanks were given to the Russians and are en route to Kyiv
