Of course, you also get your problem customers.
Just today, I had a lady come in my express lane check out - 12 items or "less" (should be fewer) - and check out some items. Barring the fact that she had more than twelve items, she seemed like a kind old lady, and we exchanged pleasantries. I don't mind if people have more than twelve items in the express lane unless there are other people behind him/her, in which case I direct them to a normal line if they have too many items. But there was no one behind her. I summed up her total and she gave me a check.
She wrote the check for thirty dollars, even though it was 26.67. I remember that, honestly. I put it through the automatic check reading machine, and it processed. The receipt came out, and I didn't give her any change. She asked me why, and I said you were only charged for your total. Then she pointed out to me my mistake, and I apologized, but told her that electronically, she was only charged for the amount of her items.
She asked me for money from my till, and at this point, there were other customers coming in. I replied that I couldn't do anything about it, and she was only charged for 26.67, and that we keep a store copy of our records and the check I returned to her was worthless and that she could just throw the check away and rip it up. But she was adamant.
So she stood there until I would give her the money back, which I obviously could not, as I didn't owe her anything. I helped some customers out, and then I asked her if there was a pressing need for the 3.33 she was "owed" in change, and that I'd give it out of my own pocket for her to just fuck off.
Of course, she just stood there, smiling at me, saying some random shit I couldn't care less about. I didn't know it was that possible to be such a pretentious, patronizing, hag, but then again, to be pretentious you have to have some semblance of worth and her life was completely and utterly worthless. She then told me, after I took a break from my other customers to address her concern, to "go help your customers". About fifteen minutes later, she decided to go "see a manager", and I politely pointed her to the courtesy desk. I finished up some people and started blinking my cashier lights. Then I accompanied her to the courtesy desk where a CSM (customer service manage) would help her.
The fat bitch that no one in their right mind would want to touch explained the situation, but the CSM informed her that she was only charged for 26.67 and that the check was worthless after it got into our records. We print and return the checks, and the machine printed on 26.67 over her writing. She then turned to me and said "I hope you realized that you made a mistake". At this point, I just smile to her and say "I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'll try to do better next time". She then says that she "saw" me make mistakes before.
What the fuck, you worthless heap of leftover organic matter? Were you stalking me or something? There's no way in hell she could know how my performance was, especially since I'm usually unfailingly amiable and polite. I even bagged her items based on utility and expected order she'd put them in her house in. My mistake was a tiny oversight on her check. Her mistake was existing.
So at this point I'm wondering how much of her blood it would take for a clean up in aisle one to spill over to aisle two. Then she, still smiling, leaves, probably thinking that her bloated, self-righteous vitriol would somehow get me to feel guilty about myself and that she scored a major victory against Wal-Mart. Of course, all I felt was a sense of curiosity about if her intestines were long enough to strangle herself with.
What a whore.
