I think part of this is how social media amplifies stuff. Maybe there were three people on the left who got annoyed about the jeans stuff. They then get so amplified that they are a convenient excuse for people on the right to focus on.
Social media tends to amplify the stupidest and most extreme voices, and since people are incapable of imagining more than 3 other people, they assume that everyone (in that category) holds that viewpoint.
And of course, we all know who holds the keys to the algorithms that decide what to amplify. The idea that they might push things that helps them personally isn't absurd either, and they surely don't like anyone on the left, being billionaires.

It's often the case that people on this forum deny or minimize the whacky stuff on the left. Then they will turn around and share stories about supposed right-wingers that are overdosing on horse paste en masse to the point gunshot victims have to wait outside hospitals. People always object when I criticize some out-of-pocket noise coming from the left on social media but I never object when they talk about Qanon or pizzagate.
Anyway, it's really not hard to find left-wings losing their shit on social media over Sydney Sweeney. I mentioned it in this thread after waking up one morning and seeing this on my reddit frontpage. It's a post from one of the largest subreddits titled "Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle are gaslighting us."
excerpts of OP
I finally watched the American Eagle x Sydney Sweeney jeans/genes ads and I was appalled...
It was obviously a thinly veiled promotion of eugenics...
Sydney Sweeney is a MAGA racist. Racists do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. They haven't earned it and never will.
A sampling of some posts with 100+ net upvotes
I love AE jeans but the last pair I bought will be my last one, it’s worth the hassle to find a new brand that doesn’t lean into fascism like this
Fascists are too comfortable in USA right now...
Watching a corporate brand named “American Eagle” slipped into fascism is not surprising.
Get this - that exact rhetorical strategy is what white supremacy pioneered and is well known for: it deliberately upsets those who care, in order to say to those who dont: look how crazy they are over nothing, racism isn't real, join us against woke.
This ad didn't just pander to white supremacy, it uses its strategies knowing there would be a negative blowback that they could offset through the ability of white supremacy to dominate the narrative in America today = maximum sale of jeans and their vision of white America.
Then Sermokala shared to this thread that Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican. After I googled it I realized that was not part of the original controversy but something they found out days later when some internet sleuths queried the state voter registry and found her name. Evidently they were so triggered they had to put on their detective hats to find some dirt on her. Good job.

I don't know how you want to defend a blond haired blue eyes person in front of a sign saying they have great genes but I'm well looking forward to it.
The controversy was social media nonsense but there's no way you can pretend to be ignorant to the very clear gaslighting that there's no problem with right wingers getting happy to celebrate their genetic superiority. It's not surprising this eugenics argument is of no issue to a trump supporter. We saw how triggered the right got when a beer company sent a handful of personalized cans to a person. People have a lot of time on their hands and basic public records is low hanging fruit. Everytime there is any controversy People dig into their background.

Does Sydney Sweeney have great tits genes or not? Just answer the question. What, are you gay or something? Does the sight of great genes disgust you!? THIS IS THE PEAK OF HUMAN CULTURE.

Also my uncle is alive because he got an mrna shot to treat his cancer. The idea that curing cancer going to profitable to pharma companies is silly. The misconception that research dollars invested should be diverted to only known technologies and science is very ignorant and not how any of this works.

"Nazi!", "Kill em [cops]!"
Old quotes of mine? Inner monologue escaping? Reddit comments about Sydney Sweeney? Maybe, but definitely a new hire at Trump's DOJ.
Less than five years after urging rioters to "kill" police at the Capitol, a former Jan. 6 defendant is working as a senior adviser for the Department of Justice
NPR has obtained police bodycam footage from multiple angles of the former defendant and current administration official, Jared Wise, berating officers and calling them "Nazi" and "Gestapo."
"I'm former law enforcement. You're disgusting. You are the Nazi. You are the Gestapo."
As he stood in front of the police line, he continued to berate the officers.
"Shame on you," he yelled. "Shame on you. Shame on you."
Violence erupted again, as rioters pushed against officers, knocking one to the ground, according to prosecutors.
""Kill 'em! Kill 'em!" Wise yelled, as he watched the skirmish. "Get 'em! Get 'em!"

Yeah it's a self defeating argument because it's implied in the name: research. In any case, I'm always very careful when talking about biotech stuff, because my gut feeling is that it's also a bit of a hype cycle thing with many spin off startups only to underdeliver year after year. I don't like antibody tech, but it's still the bell of the ball it seems. What I do really like and is maybe the best innovation in years (after CRISPR), is the CAR-T therapy, which if they're able to expand this to solid mass tumors for example, will give us an extremely interesting future. Obviously the end goal is to edit your genome in a way that cancer altogether doesn't occur any longer, but the ethical and technological framework is still pretty underdeveloped for that.

Reddit threads and upvotes need to be treated the same way as compilation sites citing twitter posts for articles.
None of this stuff is real, we know there are tons of karma farming and other bots on reddit and twitter. Its all manufactured outrage for engagement.

It's fascinating that BJ came here to claim that a post on TwoX chromosomes, a very niche and feminist subreddit is somehow relevant to this discussion.
You know what would be relevant and "proof" that this was a big deal on "the left" before rightwingers like you decided that it's a big deal, if anyone in this thread, full of "the left" brought it up before you guys did.
For that matter, if any of these controversies that you think are "proof" that "the left" is problematic were brought up by anyone other then right wingers.

Is it the only treatment he got? Is he the only one that got it? Because obviously the US government can't afford $500 million per life saved, so please expand the anecdote or its significance.
On August 08 2025 20:02 Sermokala wrote: The idea that curing cancer going to profitable to pharma companies is silly. What is this sentence supposed to mean?
Are you saying pharma companies are intentionally keeping people sick with cancer to get more money? Or curing cancer would be a loss for them? I don't see how any company that "cured" cancer wouldn't be worth over a trillion dollars overnight.
On August 08 2025 20:02 Sermokala wrote: The misconception that research dollars invested should be diverted to only known technologies and science is very ignorant and not how any of this works. This is a great rebuttal to something I haven't seen argued.
It is a mistake to presuppose that the word "research" necessitates any government anything whatsoever. The research isn't banned, is it? If it's so promising, why does it need public dollars? If it's such a long shot, why would it deserve public dollars? Stuck on level 1 if this can't be answered.
Nor is mRNA unknown anyway. Billions of doses worldwide. Should we fund it just because it'd be really nice if it worked out? There are thousands of proposed treatments for everything that have fallen by the wayside. Okay? Cost benefit. For example, it'd be really great if the world had a cheap source of nearly unlimited clean energy. It just so happens I'm working on it, it's called cold fusion. Do I deserve $10 billion in taxpayer funds, maybe not.

Yeah, Kristi Noem did shoot a young dog for misbehaving. Yes, ICE is offering $ 50 K signing bonus and paying $ 100 k salaries for people with advanced education. What is a long shot? Basic research into the drug delivery/stability/effectivity? Have a deeper understanding of public health? Do you think developing strategies for maximizing public health is something undeserving of public dollars? Companies don't do the basic (fundamental) research because that's incrediblly sunk cost, but the potential future applications can have astronomical returns. The problem is that you can't know in advance which research will be the next grail. CRISPR would have never been uncovered with private money. This was just people dissecting bacteria host defense systems to see how it worked and then there was the light bulb moment. And then comes the waterfall effect of a trillion spinoffs trying to capture some kind of market.

I can see the argument in general media and focusing on certain beauty archetypes, that often centre around race shaping and reinforcing things on aggregate, indeed I’d broadly agree with some of those critiques. Although I think we’re also collectively doing a better job here than decades past.
Idk if this instance is really all that egregious. If genes didn’t rhyme with jeans, I mean sure, it immediately becomes pretty bloody sinister. Although, simultaneously a nonsensical campaign
Or if it were a campaign that wasn’t just centred around Sweeney, but had loads of blonde blue-eyed chicks around and nobody else. And if it had turned out they’d specifically specified in casting calls for people with that characteristic

Conservatives have a very difficult time with deconstructivism. Changing the rules on a societal/legislative level is very difficult for them. People changing (tricking other people) how they look/identify is just like a complete dismantling of their own worldview. If they can't even trust their own senses, what can they trust? They're so disgruntled by this, they invent fascism to curtail it. By the way, was Germany also famously progressive in the 1930's? Edit: let's cut that down to from post WW1 up to Hitler. Didn't they have a trans culture thing at the cusp of Nazi Germany?

The only reason I know about it is because a Discord server I'm on had a meme about Republicans rejoicing that some controversy is taking the heat off of covering up child rape in the Epstein files.
