In order to maintain some kind of respectable thread quality and to show some respect for those who lost friends in this tragedy, we're forced to enact a hard line policy for this thread. Any posts holding an opinion on who is responsible or making an accusation that is not held by neutral media will be banned. Policy is in effect from page 27 onwards. Specifically, citing a Ukrainian or Russian source for your claims is going to get you banned. Opinions/facts/accusations arising from neutral media sources (i.e. media whose country of origin is not Ukraine, Russia or one of its puppet states) will be permitted. This policy extends to all forms of media; if a youtube video or picture has not come through a neutral media source then don't post it or you'll be banned. If you wish to discuss this policy please use this website feedback thread. Updated policy on aggressive posting and insults. |
They want to be their own state? fine recognize them as their own state and then call this an act of war and remove them from existence. The most disgusting thing about this is that I expect nothing will come of it. No European action taken, no sanctions, nothing. We have shown time and time again that we have no spine and no willingness to do anything other then mildly stern language.

Going well today. They are now removing bodies to places nobody knows and again disallowing investigation teams. :-X That is pretty much the "west"'s fault, no? After the OSCE was abused for spying purposes and war preparation in Kosovo, why would anyone still trust them?

Who would they trust then? I feel it's more of a us vs them situation where they just want to be in control of the situation.

How about letting the OSCE do their work while supervising them? Right now it just reeks of wanting to allow evidence to deteriorate over time.

Or if anything, let the Dutch send in an investigative team/recovery team... I don't think anyone over there should oppose that. A Dutch team to recover and be responsible to returning the bodies and possessions to the other nations should be a reasonable request.

I obviously don't know who the rebels would trust. The wreckage is in their territory though so whether we like it or not it has to be a team they trust, since forcing the way in is obviously not an option.

Dutch prime minister enjoying the sun shine.........

Scandalous way to act in the face of one of the biggest warcrimes commited against dutch citizens since the second world war. The dutch government has been very reluctant to even acknowledge the gravity of what has happened and has been hardly visible. I fear this toothless approach is going to result in no justice for the victims and no one will ever be prosecuted for this. I'm very ashamed of the way the government is handling this.
I think the Australian prime minister was a beacon of hope. His speech resonated with me.
Edit: Photo has been confirmed to be real, taken at 1 pm today.

I do think it's really sad that no one from our government is at the site yet.

Yeah, he should only sit in dark places from now on on.
Seriously, random paparazzi photographs are not interesting. I see a guy sitting and speaking on his phone. How is that scandalous? Plus obviously it could be from whenever. Is a prime minister not allowed to ever sit in the sun?
|
Do agree. It's not like he can do anything by himself anyway, and for phonecalls it doesn't matter where you are or how you're dressed. Also, it's pretty farfetched to call it a "warcrime". For that you would need to be at war in the first place.
This is a tradegy. And who gives a shit where he is/what he dresses like? Maybe he can't do anything at the moment because he already did what he can, to go apeshit now because the PM is casual seems pretty hysteric to me. 1pm is dinnertime, and he clearly just ate judging by the empty plate and coke. Be reasonable.

I don't get it? Should the prime minister be wearing black and wear a veil and never make public appearances again?
|
I don't think it's that big of a deal (if the photo is even actually real), but it's just a dumb thing to do. His last appearance was in a press conference uttering 'we will not rest until'. If his next appearance is chilling on a lounge couch that doesn't give much confidence in his determination or his words.

Of course the man needs to eat but it's about appearance and this doesn't look like a strong leader recently confronted with an attack killing 200 of his citizens. He looks like he's having a leisurely lunch and might stroll back to the office.
Can u imagine Barack Obama behaving this way after an attack on US citizens?

Earlier there were talking did other planes fly over that area after malaysian plane got shot.
Singapore Airlines (codesharing flight with SAS and Virgin Australian) flew only 100 seconds behind Malaysian airlines. Air India plane was also 25km away from where malaysian plane got shot. It was going from Delhi to Birginham

If this were a pre-planned attack on Dutch people this would have made sense, but given the circumstances what can anyone possibly do? No one targetted the plane intentionally, it was a horrible mistake due to stupidity and incompetence of the people who got their hands on the anti-air weapons system, but still a mistake.

That's what you can do with paparazzi photos, you can make someone look however you want them to look. Just pick the right photo out of the hundreds you've made. In this case, pick the one where he looks perfectly relaxed and content and publish them and voila, perfect outrage material.
It's incredibly stupid to even care about pictures like this, let alone get angry about them.

The way rutte has been handling this crisis has been very disappointing. Not sure what he could have done better but somehow it feels like he has done nothing at all besides expressing how terrible it all is.
Its time we start taking our own responsibility in this incident and acknowledge our own faults. British airways and air france did not fly over that area, yet Malaysian airlines/klm did (apearently because it was cheaper..) They should have taken precautions and not fly over this area (in wich several planes where shot at high altitude in the weeks before..) There should be an investigation who decided to fly over that area and there should be an investigation as why the dutch authoritys didn't forbid their airlines to fly over that area. All this to prevent something like this ever happening in the future.
"The most disgusting thing about this is that I expect nothing will come of it. No European action taken, no sanctions, nothing. We have shown time and time again that we have no spine and no willingness to do anything other then mildly stern language"
Yup,nothing will come from this unfortunately. It was a horrible accident, what can be done? All we can and imo should do is investigate our own role in all this and if we could and or should somehow have prevented this from happening by not flying over war zones.

MOSCOW (AP) — A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash — suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off.
The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna on Friday quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that "a significant number of the bodies weren't fresh," adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition.
