In a last ditch effort to rake in some money they threw up the "please pay us" thing. They then shut the site down after making some hard cash from people who paid right away, took the money and ran. That's what I was thinking too.. STOP USING GROOVESHARK IT HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY GOVERNMENT. ANYONE WHO USES THE SITE WILL BE RECORDED AND FLAGGED FOR "Piracy Watch" FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS. THEY ARE WATCHING YOUR DOWNLOADS AND ANYTHING ABOVE 256mb A DAY WILL AUTOMATICALLY PING AN INVESTIGATION INTO YOUR PAST/CURRENT/FUTURE DOWNLOADS. ABANDON SHIP
My sarcasm detector is broken, if this is a case of sarcasm I apologise in advance. Just thought I'd say you don't download anything on Grooveshark, you can only stream the music unless you use external programs (afaik). So yeah.

You don't download them in the traditional sense, rather store them in temporary files.. either way you're in the E-permanent file system permanently.

blocked in denmark... but there are ways around these things !

I feel like it's only a matter of time before it's pay for everyone.

Its not been converted to a "pay-to-use", the ISP's have been told to block it same way they did with the pirate bay. It's a simple matter to get around it but its still annoying. I really like grooveshark

People always want things for free, people ad block the streams they watch very regularly. As soon as things which are usually free over the internet start getting charged for, people get up in arms about it. People fight against sopa and acta on the net (which were wrong, I don’t disagree on that), but people think that EVERYTHING on the internet should be free. That music and films and TV series should be available to anyone without any kind of trade taking place. I watch hours of internet streams a week, be it SC2 or LoL or things on You Tube and I can’t complain about adverts because that’s what is keeping all of this available to me. I didn’t get into spotify until they were playing an advert every 3 or 4 songs because that was how they survived, I’ve never had a problem with it.
People need to realise that piracy is a massive problem on the internet, and we don’t have the right to simply watch or listen to things that people have made for free, regardless of whether or not the profits are going to the artist or the meaningless record label who will simply churn the next act out of their factory.
We might not agree with everything that happens in this world, but the people who make these fantastic pieces of media that we all watch and talk about and discuss and debate deserve the right to protect what they have done, and personally, I think that comes above our right to be able to expect these things for nothing.
I’ve probably gone way too far in general with this post but there’s been so much recently about freedom of speech on the internet recently posted on TL, that I just wanted to put my thoughts forward about the issue in general. Yes, I think its brilliant that people rose up in a singular voice and said no to things like SOPA, but on the other side, I know that if I was making original content, be it through a music studio, a film production company or sitting in a basement of a shitty flat, I would want the things that I made to be mine, and for them to be distributed on my terms, and if I wanted to charge people to watch or listen or whatever to my media, that I was able to do so fairly and not have people assume that downloading my creation off the Pirate Bay or Mega Upload or anywhere else for free was fine.
I hope this makes sense to some people.
Peace out TL, your all awesome.

I subscribed to Rdio a while back and absolutely love it. I was worried about Grooveshark eventually going away so decided that it was worth it (to me) to get onto a service that sounded like they had lasting potential.

I'm shocked that so many are willing to pay for a service that doesn't pay the artists anything.

Update: Grooveshark is free in paywall countries again (at least it's free in Finland again), but now they want you to view an advertisement video every few hours. If you paid the money when they asked you to, you will not get the ad video.

All the good ones (namely Rdio) are United States only. The only ones here in Finland are Spotify and Deezer that both require a Facebook account to use.
I got the $9/month for mobile grooveshark and I'm happy with it as long as it doesn't get shut down. Would love to pay for Spotify but they don't let me sign up without facebook.

Was scared when I saw the title. I use groove shark all the time. Glad it still works in the America's.

You would... pay?
I pay for Spotify Premium, 10 euros a month or something like that which I find cheap for such a great service, it's also an easy way to atleast contribute a tiny bit to my favorite bands.

Spotify Premium is just so much better. Spotify on my phone, every song I'd ever want add-free on my computer. And knowing that my money is actually supporting the artists I'm listening to just makes it so much better to me. And yeah, it's kindda cheap - and legal

Their Mac standalone client is fantastic, and seems to be based off Mac iTunes (which is actually good unlike Windows iTunes) though their Windows client could use a bit of work. There's almost all the music I like on it, and it's only $5 per month. For the amount I use it, that is a huge deal, as I probably listen to it for 6-8 hours a day. For a 30 day month, that's less than 3 cents per hour. During finals I'll probably use it more like 10 hours per day.
I used to use Grooveshark (but only for a little bit) but they seem kinda shady as they essentially sell your info in exchange for album rights, which they don't pay for until the song or album has a huge number of listens. (Source)

Grooveshark now asks for money when you try to play a song, or you can listen for 4 hours after watching a 30 second commercial.
It literally came into effect today for the U.S., I think.
