Of course it was an accident but they endangered the lives of many people. If a private person would have done something like this they would be in soooo much trouble so it's not more than fair that these guys get some jail time or have to pay a couple million to every person in that neighborhood

Not a single second will be spend in jail by any member of the team.

What a tremendous mistake, pointing a loaded cannon towards a residential neighborhood. it's more like how could they miss a row of trashcans filled with water hit through a concrete wall and through another house and the god damn canonball did still not stop. Sounds like they used way too much blackpowder or american houses are made out of paper. Yep american houses are made out of paper and wood lol I still dont completely understand why this is the case. Why dont they just use bricks ? It's way stronger, less maintenance. Is it just cause it's cheaper and faster to build ? Bricks major weakness is seismic activity. (Mythbusters is filmed in California - where earthquakes occur frequently)
Look if it blew through a cement wall a whole house onto someones roof and through a van. They would need to build a house made a of brick, except no room in the house. Just a house size full of brick.

People like you give me so much enjoyment.
If a private person got the same permits and undertook the same precautions as Mythbusters did they'd be in the same position. Perhaps the most noteworthy difference would be that most people would assume these precautions were not taken from someone they'd never heard of. This is, however, not interesting as far as the law goes. They'd be judged the same way, and as this was from what I understand a freak accident there's probably not going to be any suing to begin with, and even less so any criminal indictments.. Even if Discovery probably will pay for damages and try to save as much face as possible.
If a private person just fired a cannon randomly in some suburban neighbourhood, though, they'd obviously be charged with reckless endagerment among other things. But that would happen to Mythbusters too, had that been the case.

If a private person had done the same thing (employ several experts, fire the cannon at an approved location, take every possible safety precaution) then they would not be in any more trouble. They would be if it was just a dumbass firing a cannon out of his backyard, which is an entirely different scenario.
No one will receive any jail time for this and it is ridiculous to suggest that it is appropriate. This was an accident, plain and simple.
If you're driving your car, hit an icy spot in the road and lose control and damage another car... should you spend time in jail? You did nothing wrong, but something bad happened that could have injured someone, do you deserve years in prison? Of course not.

That was pretty dangerous, thankfully no one got hurt.

what planet are you on!?!

Problem with speculating of whos fault this was and what happens to show and so on is, that we don´t really know what happened. It´s not like they accidently fired the cannon while it was pointing 180dec wrong direction, more likely its wheel broke 1sec before firing or something like that.
And even if someone is sent to jail, mythbusters got loads of experience of how to get out.

They always see to have predetermined conclusions, and their methodology is often questionable, if not scientifically inaccurate: case in point, this cannon ball incident, the cowboy episode where a cowboy hits a moving target from a moving horse, where they decide that it is impossible to do so where in reality it is simply a matter of statistics, and the more you do it, say you are a cowboy gun slinger yourself, the more you are likely to achieve it. And there is also that ninja episode. Also, I really disliked how they treated the moon hoax episode. Too much Americanism while disregarding rigid scientific procedure.
It's a reality show about explosions and weird myths. Can't you just enjoy it without picking apart everything they do?

There are no "standard" precautions for what they're doing. All we know is, they didn't have enough precautions and can/should be sued/prosecuted for negligence. They put unknowing bystanders in mortal danger and no ammount of "normal precautions" can forgive that, legally or morally. They shouldn't do what they do if there's a remote chance of someone getting hurt (except maybe the production crew themselves).

I was gonna respond to about a million misinformed posts in this thread but then found that other people already had, so now I really have nothing else to say haha.
Glad no one got hurt though, and hopefully this doesn't hurt the show too much. Although it's not too scientific, it's still a lot of fun to watch.
Also that's my local news! Since I live about an hour away from where this happened.

Well I really like the show (last months I spend my free time watching starcraft rather than sit in front of tv though), but this was way too much. Why the hell do the do this stuff in a neighbourhood? They can afford to blow up lots of expensive things so why cant they move somewhere safer? It would be really shame if this caused halt of the show, but they clearly deserve it. You cant just say "well nobody got hurt so whats the deal." Cannon is a weapon made to kill and according to the news, they werent far from it. They deserve some kind of punishment and shouldnt get any special treatment just because they are tv persons. I think even jail should be considered

sometimes i wonder about the internet....
The place where they did this is probably the only place where they CAN do this... Yes obviously someone made a mistake (actually someone made a fundamental mistake, almost every student of history would be able to tell them that they'd need a massive amount of sandbags or an earthen wall to stop a cannonball) but since no one was harmed and they got the proper permits (which shows that the people issueing those also have no clue about history) any question about jail time is simply idiotic.

They were at a bomb range designated specifically for doing these types of things. It's probably the safest area possible already, not to mention the only place that's legal. The houses were quite far away. It was a freak accident that the cannonball happened to ricochet and go over to the houses. They were under the supervision of police, fire department, and many other officials while doing this. They had complete permission to do it.
Not to mention the houses were most likely built AFTER the bomb range was already there, and were probably sold for cheap under the pretense of "it's close to a bomb range so you might be bothered with some explosion sounds sometimes, but it will be cheaper because of that" which means the owners of the houses knew full well about living next to a bomb range when buying the house, though I'm sure they never expected something like this.

They did the experiment at the same bomb range they've done a bunch of other experiments, not a neighborhood. The cannonball took a bad bounce over a gigantic dirt mound. Likewise, because they took reasonable (read: all possible) safety precautions there is little legal action to be taken against them.

Well that's cool. Let's hope we get to see it miss and everyone on set collectively "Wat..."
