I do wish there was a way of "thumbs up" or liking a post, because my likes would be all over that. Which Laphroaig? I loved the Quarter Cask

![]() I immediately knew it was bad news. I remembered from my early Ralfy watching days the lowish score he gave it, citing e150a and chill filtration not doing the brand any favours. At 40%, and distilled an extra time, almost every review I read told of flat flavors and weak experiences. Suffice to say, as a present, we decided not to exchange it for something more respectable and give it a try. What a mistake. The nose is the only redeeming quality of this malt, but upon further inspection all you're really getting is a soft draft of barley sugar and light fruit. This should almost be a perfume worn by women. The taste is completely lacking. Both of us have been drinking scotch for a few years now, and we've tasted everything "good" (we even enjoy McLelland's Islay, 5 year old bowmore) to the stuff which just isnt like this: (the bottle on the right). http://c0728562.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/WS05369_HR.jpg And I can honestly tell you this just doesn't have ANY taste. The first time you try it you'll say "Sure, it's got barley sugar... and... some florals... and... some really diluted salt... and... well shit. This tastes like a glenlivet watered down to 30%". Yes sir. Because it's been distilled a third time and then watered down to 40%. The malt is touted as an excellent "beginner's malt" but honestly if you started someone off with this they would think Scotch is the most boring liquor in existence. Happy holidays!

An acquaintance of mine once recommended this to me and I got it. I remember thinking that it "tasted like fruit" and that I didn't particularly fancy it. I never understood why he recommended it, as it's not very cheap either.

That's harsh haha. I had some Auchentoshan yesterday, and yes it is very mild and I guess fruity. I always keep a bottle at home precisely for beginners who want to try. They simply won't appreciate most better ones anyway, and it's a good one to get them past the idea that all whiskey tastes like fiery puke. Although Glynelish 14yo is still my favorite hook into the whiskey world for beginners.

First of all, I found this batch to be a bit more complex than the last time I tried it. I get almonds and marzipan, vanilla and some green fruit. Sure its not a big flavour bomb, but its a lowland whisky so you shouldnt expect a flavour bomb. At its price point I think its totally decent! Anyways If you want more flavour, I also got a bottle of Laphroiag triple wood: Its alright but I think the peat is too fresh. Theres supposed to be oak, bourbon and sherry influence in it, but you REALLY have to get your nose deep in the glass to find it. On the palatte the sherry is a little more noticeable, sweet clean grape notes. The bourbon influence comes through in the form of cinnamon/nutmeg/christmas spices. To the casual whisky drinker I doubt they could distinguish it from standard laphroiag bottlings. Also, im gunna take some christmas money and go buy a indendent bottling of Mortlach 15, I will review it here when I do :D

Did not add water or ice, wow what a taste. ![]() The first three he introduced me were Auchentoshan Classic, Glenmorangie 10 years and Speyburn 10 years. (my uncle likes soft whisky) All of them were pretty similar to my untrained nose and mouth, but if you had to choose on of them i would go with the Speyburn. Later he bought two bottles of Knockando 12 years, which has a great toffee nose for me, and Jura 10yo. The Jura was the best whisky i had so far, despite the low prize it has (23€ in the internet i think). My Dad, my uncle and me were blown away by its strength. Even though it has only 40% alcohol it gives a great taste with softness and a nice almond nuance. 2 Days ago i tried a cheap bourbon thats new in our supermarket "John Medleys" 6yo for 15€. It was quite fun, because instead of a normal bourbon we experienced banana in our glasses. Oh and for christmas my aunt bought me a miniature of glenfiddich 12, but i didn´t open it yet and i will wait till the right setting occurs ![]() In the future i hope me and my friends are able to buy some more high quality stuff

I've always introduced people to whiskey with my Dalwhinnie 15, very approachable. I haven't actually tried the 2 you're discussing, have you tried the Dalwhinnie? Wondering if I should acquire a Glynelish... For christmas I received a bottle of "Glengrant - The Major's Reserve" and I would certainly consider using that as a beginners whisky as well. As I saw it described somewhere - it honestly has no strong "stand out" flavours. It hints at many things, but nothing really grabs you. I haven't had enough of it yet to have a well rounded opinion, only having tried it the once, so i'll avoid anything specific, but I did enjoy it, as something a bit different to my usual full-on taste... Which brings me to the bottle of Ardbeg Galileo, which I brought for myself some time back... It's fantastic! Certainly my favourite of the Ardbeg lineup that I have tried (10yr, Corry, Uig), it brings a fruity taste to an Ardbeg that hasn't been present in the others, whilst still retaining all of the smokey flavours that make Ardbeg fantastic. (Can you tell I like Ardbeg? ![]()

![]() I'm trying to get started with wisk(e)ys, as in no one around me knows anything about it, which is rather not cool ![]() It's my birthday soon and i've been reading a fair share of this thread but didnt find what I was looking for. I decided to buy myself a present but since I dont have a clue at the moment about what I might like or not, I wonder if some of you could advice me, say, a sweet scotch, a dry bourbon and a smokey irish whiskey, or vice versa. Regarding price i'd rather not pay mor than 40€ (50 us dollars) a bottle. Cheers!

Can't really direct you well in for Irish whisky or bourbon, but for scotch... smokey - Ardbeg 10, talisker 10 (softer introduction for sure, smoke with less of the "tar" flavours present in Islay peated whiskies) sweet - Dalwhinnie 10yr

Unlike most irish whiskeys it's only distilled 2 times (instead of 3) and peat is used during malting. Should be about 30€ a bottle. Bushmills on the other hand is pretty sweet, really easy to drink, no smoke at all. Really like that one. And it's not very expensive, about 25€ a bottle but I haven't delved into the world of whiskeys that much myself yet..

![]() I've come to love the sweeter whiskies, which is probably a no-brainer, since I'm still relatively new in the whisky-tasting business. My introduction to peated whiskies was an Isle of Jura: Superstition - a whisky which I am not fond of. I like the aftertaste but especially the smell; No thank you, none for me. Im eager to try fx a Caol Ila 12yo, which isnt necessarily that expensive, and hopefully have a better experience. If you have recommendations for cheaper peated ones, do holla. So right now im enjoying a dram of Glenfiddich 12yo. A new bottle, but the same whisky I had a bit left of (for irish coffee) for a long time back then and despised the taste of when it became too dominating. Now I am thoroughly enjoying it. Funny how things change in such a short time. But im very glad they did.
