one samurai vs one legionnaire is one thing
but 1000 samurai vs 1000 legionnaires is an entirely different battle
like, a spartan would probably get crushed by a ninja because the strength of ancient spartan (and greek) armies were in their phalanxes
I wouldn't bet on it. Their military strength in battle may have been in a phalanx but that certainly doesn't mean that a Spartan hoplite couldn't hold his own in a one vs. one scenario.
Pankration was a "sport" for the ancient Greeks, and it was intense to the point where it would make MMA look like a sissies activity. They may have run around in togas and the like but they could most certainly hold their own.
Hell, even Socrates, known for his mental strength, could probably lay the smack down on most people - having served as a hoplite at Marathon.

The Rhodesian Light Infantry, so bad ass that they managed to fight a war for 20 years, being surrounded by enemies on three sides, and under a heavy arms embargo from the western world, losing only 80 men. I'm a bit biased though, my dad is a veteran of their corp.
![[image loading]](http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5006/5358993489_937ae7f69e.jpg) They even brought their company cheetah out to visit when Prince Charles came to visit, giving it a place next to him in the dining hall. They didn't have much respect for the British crown (;

Reminds me of a quote I saw 10+ years ago. 1 Samurai can defeat 1,000 Ninja 1 Ninja can defeat 1,000 Samurai.
problem with spartans is that they are very scantily protected. leather spandex and cape, seriously? j/k :p Sacred Band of Thebes > Spartans What's more elite than 300? How about half their size. Sacred Band of Thebes is composed of 150 homosexual males (yes, it pertinent to mention they are homosexuals; they are selected because they are homosexuals). Defeated the Spartans every time they encountered. It took a total reformation of military arms and tactics in Greece before anybody to defeat them when Phillip created the sarissa.
I think you are reading it wrong bro. The wikipedia page says 150 couples aka 300 total guys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_band_of_thebes

Spartan military strength went up and down. At the height of their power the soldiers were a lot stronger than after they started losing land to coalitions of nations that stood up against them amongst the Greek citystates.

Agreed. White death, indeed.
Who else learned about him from the Cracked article? I had never heard of him before that.

Even at the height of their power, they were still weaker than Athens.

Sparta beat Sparta. Epimondas was a great general and his "sacred band" were great soldiers but by that point in history Sparta had spent decades fighting against numerous other city states while maintaining a nearly impossible social system which basically bled them dry of males. By the time they fought at Leuctra they were already on the decline.
Props to Thebes and all that but yeah, poor Sparta.

Greatest warrior is obviously one of those "my dick" debates.
However, for my own personal taste it would probably be one of three groups in history. The first was the Mongolian troops who we often "label" as the Mangudai, that is to say the units of Mongolian cavalry who were more or less the "bait". The second choice would probably be the Gurkhas and the third being the 442nd Infantry Regiment, USA. All three - if sources are to believed, displayed incredible fortitude.
