So guys I wanted to start a thread on people's favorite warriors The basic rules would be why is these particular warriors is your favorite and why they would kick ass
My personal Favorite would be the Samurai... Why? Cause they were one of the honors who fought for their masters and with honor
So guys what warriors from history do you guys think is the best and your favorite??
Lets get more creative abt this other than Sc2 answers
Richard the Lionheart, because although he was a bad king, husband, son and father, he fought for what he believed in (not saying it was right). He was a good military leader that kept the morale of his troops high, I watched a documentary where it said he defeated Saladins army, which outnumbered his greatly, with nothing but his physical presence. And lastly, he forgave the child who killed him.
Id choose the Mongolian horde though, if you didnt mean a specific person.
Fire Emblem fighters have always been my favorite warriors since my childhood. But bleh...the newer ones keep getting worse and worse. Fire Emblem IV FTW
But for something real. English Longbows It was pretty much these guys, not guns that ended the Medieval era. Guns just acted as a catalyst.
Why not they are part of my nations military which does all kinds of crap in the interest of the people ie me. Although if i could go back further lets go with the rough riders
Otherwise, Soap must be the biggest Warrior there ever is. Saves the world twice, disregard bullet/knife/explosion wounds, and takes down like 3000 Russians.
I've always admired warriors and been in awe of them in any game, movie or old historical mythology. Samurai are probably the undisputed best sword-fighters with the Katana throughout history until gunpowder came around and has the longest 700 year tradition still alive through Kendo - The Way of The Sword.

Sir William Wallace
Sir William Wallace (c. 1270 – August 23, 1305) was a Scottish knight who led a resistance to the English military occupation of Scotland during significant periods of the Wars of Scottish Independence. Wallace was the inspiration for the historical novel The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie written by the fifteenth-century minstrel Blind Harry. For centuries after its publication, Harry’s epic poem, ‘The Wallace’ was the second-most popular book in Scotland, outdone only by the Bible.
To the Scottish people, Wallace was the exemplification of undying patriotism to the cause of that country’s independence, giving his life to such. His desire for peace and freedom brought the clans together while it struck fear into his enemies. Importantly, he continually defied the invading king, Edward ‘Longshanks’ Plantagenet I of England, when all others had given up.
On the contrary, English chroniclers consider Wallace an outlaw, a murderer, a perpetrator of atrocities and a traitor.
Wallace put the freedom of his country and people above all else in life, and is considered to be Scotland’s greatest patriotic hero. Dying a martyr, he became the very symbol of Scotland’s struggle for freedom. He is respected not only among the Scottish peoples but by people of all creeds and nationalities, as all can relate to the basic right of each nation to self governance, and all understand a man’s love for his native soil.
Guy killed hundreds of the enemy with just a simple bolt-action mosin-nagant, didn't even use a scope, because he'd sneak so close to the enemy that the glare would give him away. He also had a 100+ kills credited using a SMG.
Russians (edit: oops) actually called in artillery strikes just to kill this one man, and failed. He also survived a head-shot.
Spartans were probably the highest skilled warriors of all time, possibly only Samurai or Ninja could compete(On a real basis) and my favorite are all 3.
Reminds me of a quote I saw 10+ years ago. 1 Samurai can defeat 1,000 Ninja 1 Ninja can defeat 1,000 Samurai.

The only problem with threads like these is 90% of people have no idea what their "favourite warrior" was actually like and instead post their favourite fantasy.

Ninja, Spartan, Samurai, etc.
I get somewhat annoyed when people talk about Spartans in the way that they are portrayed in 300. There are way more bad-ass city states out there in comparison to the Spartans.
Sacred Band of Thebes were undefeated against the Spartans. Athens and Platea actually defeated the Persians at Marathon. 10 000 against 100 000 and they suffered less than 200 casualties.
Thermopylae was actually fought with other city states there were about 1200 soldiers outside of the 300 spartan bodyguards of King Leonidas. Guess what was one of the city states that participated; Thebes.

Gave up all wordly possessions to fight for what they believed in. Unwavering in believe even when the French decided to dispose of their Order.
The last Grand Master Jacques de Molay who despite torture and seven years imprisonment, on his day of judgement retracted his forced confessions and publicly declaring his believe in his Order. He was later that day to be burned at the stake and held his composure during the slow ordeal that people collected his ashes as a relic.

Pankration was a "sport" for the ancient Greeks, and it was intense to the point where it would make MMA look like a sissies activity. They may have run around in togas and the like but they could most certainly hold their own.
Hell, even Socrates, known for his mental strength, could probably lay the smack down on most people - having served as a hoplite at Marathon.

Sparta beat Sparta. Epimondas was a great general and his "sacred band" were great soldiers but by that point in history Sparta had spent decades fighting against numerous other city states while maintaining a nearly impossible social system which basically bled them dry of males. By the time they fought at Leuctra they were already on the decline.
Props to Thebes and all that but yeah, poor Sparta.
Greatest warrior is obviously one of those "my dick" debates.
However, for my own personal taste it would probably be one of three groups in history. The first was the Mongolian troops who we often "label" as the Mangudai, that is to say the units of Mongolian cavalry who were more or less the "bait". The second choice would probably be the Gurkhas and the third being the 442nd Infantry Regiment, USA. All three - if sources are to believed, displayed incredible fortitude.

oh sup you killed my friend let me just go into a rage and kill your entire squad. And that's not even how he got the medal of honor.
favorite warriors were probably the roman legionaries, the tower shield/gladius and pilum is a pretty awesome design and is professional looking. A very good standard infantry for the roman legions. Also obviously not the best warriors though, but i like their style. One of the Best warriors would be the mongol cavalry archers. Their technology>the rest of the world. greek phalanx's and such are way overrated in this thread as usual.
phalanxs probably went out of date when generals mastered double envelopment. An average guy who goes to them gym is probably tougher than spartan warriors back then. people were shorter back then and not quite as healthy, haha.
Currently reading the ''Emperor'' books, so I'm totally into the roman war machine at the moment. So my answer would be a roman legionary. Great skill and awesome discipline. But I like the Knight Templar as well, and when it comes to pure fiction I would choose a Jedi any day of the week. :D
Very tough Nepalese troops who fought for the British Empire throughout history (and in Afghanistan recently from what I understand)
Mongol riders:
They were mass murderers, but damn were they effective in battle.
Honorable mention: (Polish) Winged Hussars
Looked pretty badass as winged cavalry, and quite effective from what I understood as the noise from their wings would scare away enemy cavalry horses.

don't get me wrong, I'm not saying a spartan would be weak in a 1 on 1 scenario
I'm just saying training to fight in a 1 on 1 scenario and be the very best in 1 on 1 combat (which would probably even vary depending on the armaments and training of the opponent one would face) is an entirely different subject when compared to the theory of how one should fight within a large cohesive force. hell you're not even going to have one best soldier in a 1v1, in reality warrior "a" probably has an advantage over "b", who probably has an advantage over "c" etc etc
also, a sort of master-of-all is master-of-none/to be strong everywhere is to be weak everywhere sort of thing is at work as well. the best techniques and methods for fighting in a duel would not be the same as the best methods and techniques one would use as part of a group. someone who devotes themselves to mastery of one has a one-up on someone who tries to mastery both (given that there are one two possibilities, when reality there are probably many more which further decreases the plausibility of attempting to master all styles)

Biased opinion: Vikings... From what I've heard the only ppl the romans wouldn't attack out of fear. Hearing tales about vikings riding their shields down mountains for fun (and speed) and fighting while entoxicated was terrifying for the legionnaires. On top of this vikings were around 30-40% larger than the majority of the rest of the world at that given time.
English longbow men. Pretty much switched the entire way of warfare in all of Europe. With aim and range beyond any rivalry these guys pushed us into the future.
Since we're pulling in fictional warriors... They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them, and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines so that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear. +++ The Emperor of Mankind
As for the actual topic, I'm torn between the Spartans and Roman Legionnaires. I suppose if we are discussing the individual warrior I would have to pick the Spartans for their complete devotion to war and its preparation of it. Few societies have spent so much individual effort and time to the art of war. But as a unit/army I would have to go with Roman Legionnaires. Few armies could stand before the Roman legions at their prime. They were also a shining example of war in more than its direct contact dimensions, they employed vast logistical capabilities and engineer units that helped them both in the field of combat but also helped hold the Roman empire together (through the construction of roads and the such). While the Legions themselves were also held together by the iron grip of discipline, a trait we still to this day seek to instill into soldiers.
Shaolin monk. Focused on peace, calm, and fighting for no reason other than reaching a state of perfection. Capable of physical feats that still amaze us even today.
Also, if I'm not going with something historically accurate...
"Ammianus Marcellinus remarked in his memoirs that members of the Pushtigban were able to impale two Roman soldiers on their spears at once with a single furious charge."
Simo Häyhä is a total badass. Soldier with most confirmed kills, no one else comes even close (double the amount of Vasilli Zaitsev). I've even met him once, he's the reason I went for sniper training when doing my compulsory military service.
It seems somehow odd to reduce history to "badass warriors" such as samurai, ninjas, spartans, etc. There is so much more to it. The political system in various state-cities of Greece, their culture and their way of thinking were fascinating things we inherited.
Opposing "a spartan" and "a legionnaire" is kind of playing Pokémon. It's implying that those men were nothing more than fictional characters in your eyes!
And also, past 16 years old, you might be a bit too old to nerdgasm over the picture of a shiny knight.
There are a lot of great warriors and warrior casts and a lot are already mentioned in this thread. There is however a great warrior cast missing and that is the group that left us with the word Assassin.
Assuming he did what he's supposedly done: Bradley E. Manning - warrior for truth. In the face of making the most dangerous nation on earth your enemy. Guy's got balls the size of the moon.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like victory. Someday this war's gonna end...
Not only being badass for having the manliest of manly nicknames, "Pips" (if you'd translate it it should be something like "squeak", it is onomatopoetic for the sound a mouse would make) also shot down 101 enemy planes during WW2. Now that's a lot, but not that much in comparison to other Aces(seriously, there were 14 Germans alone with more than 200 credited kills, and god knows how many Allied pilots could handle their fighter aircraft famously well, I bet there were a few). The thing is, this is one of only two(the other being his lesser-known wingman) German pilots who flew an attacking mission on the invading forces at D-Day. While probably still drunk and hung over from an ironically held binge-drinking-celebration about the withdrawal of his whole flying squad from the front the day before. And they motherfucking survived flying across the beach and invasion fleet with probably thousands of anti-aircraft guns from the shipspointed at them. This is what I call a gauntlet run.
Shiragaku beat me to it, english longbowmen were the heralds of a new era of warfare. Roman legionnaires are a close second though, as they truly were a military force ahead of their time by at least a few hundred years.
While they have a long and illustrious string of asskickings under their heavyweight championship belts, the Winged Hussars' finest hour came during the epic Battle of Vienna in 1683, when the Ottoman Turkish armies were busting nuts across Eastern Europe looking to conquer all of Christendom. With the main body of the Holy Roman Imperial army completely surrounded and besieged by over 200,000 Turkish warriors, the badass Polish King Jan Sobieski led the single hugest and most balls-out cavalry charge in history. Their wings fluttering and zipping like creepy, spear-flinging birds of prey, three thousand Winged Hussars plowed into the Turkish force, driving them back, plundering their supply train, and driving the Turks from the field.
That's a pretty effective fighting force if you ask me :-)

Most of those AWESOME quotes you heard in 300 are actually true and come from the real Sparta.
Yes!
"One famous example comes from the time of the invasion of Philip II of Macedon. With key Greek city-states in submission, he turned his attention to Sparta and sent a message: "If I win this war, you will be slaves forever." In another version, Philip proclaims: "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city." According to both accounts, the Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If." Subsequently, both Philip and Alexander would avoid Sparta entirely."
My granddad. No joke. In the danish resistance under WW2.
There was a bounty, if someone catched him. He helped in the great escape helping thousands of jewish people to Sweden. There was a bullet hole in a danish museum in Copenhagen. It was a group of Nazis chasing and shooting after him.
He lost a bunch of friends and 'co-workers' during that time. He told my grandmother, that he was working late in a newspaper factory.
He passed away 6 years ago, but he never really wanted to talk about what he saw or did, but in his last month, he really opened up.
The greatest warrior ever, Link! Just selflessly and more or less individually indulges on a quest to save everyone in the world from evil, ignoring the incredibly dangerous obstacles, and reaps none of the benefits of his quest! He saves everyone else, then goes off on his own again, no princess, no bounty, no fame! This guy fights undead and robotic opponents without even flinching. He kills a fucking dragon with a hammer, how much more badass can you get?
no one have mentioned the vietnamese .... they are a great defends force: 3 times held off mongolian (while they were conquering the entire asia), multiple wins vs chinese through out the entire history + win vs French and US modern war (and yes, they won that shit, not US LOL).... Most of the material art/action scenes you see in western movies now a day are came from vietnamese material arts (spidermans, transporters, etc...) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_invasions_of_Vietnam
if some one could held this off: they surely are smthing right?

Weeeeeelllll not to nitpick but they did have the greatest military mind of that age directing them and they had the benifet of amazing calvary support as well. They were pretty badass though.
As for me, I am partial towards the Spartans or the Vikings.
Ah wait, I forgot the fictional one, I guess i'll go with Björn Wolfsklaue (Bjorn the Fell-Handed). Space Wolves Cybot who was alive as a human being when the Emperor and Leman Russ still were alive and walking and killing shit.

Their might and tactical power was unmatched during that time, bringing pain and destruction across Eurasia; i.e. total ballers.
They were pretty awesome. The reason they were so deadly was because instead of having archers train to be horsemen, they trained expert horsemen to shoot while mounted. While they weren't as accurate as an archer on their own two feet, they were able to crank out an incredible amount of shots per minute, while being somewhat accurate in a general area (usually there was a group of soldiers they could just fire into). Combine that with an incredible mobility that can carry you all around the battlefield and you have a deadly combination. It's also worth noting that contrary to traditional horsemen, these mounted archers didn't have to engage in close-quarters combat, rendering spear men rather ineffective against them.
One of my favorite historical "warriors" are the Chinese troops that used the Chinese repeating crossbow, the Chu No Ku. Basically in an era where people had longbows, etc, the Chinese used a machine gun. They would fire volleys of arrows at a time into the ranks of the enemy, wiping out whole platoons at a time.
"Speirs successfully took over the assault and led Easy Company to victory. During this battle, Lt. Dike had ordered a platoon to go on a flanking mission around the rear of the town. To countermand this order, Speirs himself ran through the town and German lines (as this platoon had no radio), linked up with the other soldiers, and relayed the order. Having completed this, he proceeded to run back through the German-occupied town."
"he single-handedly captured the fourth 105 mm Howitzer."
He was a german mercenary about 500 years ago. Besides his numerous exploits involving him taking revenge on employers who stabbed him in the back, he also was a leader of a peasant rebellion that he straight up abandoned when it started becoming a lawless, angry mob, something he refused to be a part of.
But what really gets me about this guy is what he did after being shot by a cannon, forcing his sword back and causing him to hack off his own arm. He made a new limb.
That is a metal, mechanical arm. Made five centuries ago. It was so ahead of its time, he was even able to use it to write with. Of course, this also meant that it could hold a weapon, and punch people. Which is something he did do a lot of.
Oh, and Goethe wrote a play about him. In it, he actually invents the phrase "Kiss my ass". Okay, that one is really more Goethe, but still. Bad ass.
EDIT: For the guy that posted about the character Gutts from Berserk, this is the actual human being he was based off of.
as far as i can remember speirs was on the border or perhaps even OVER the border to becoming a war criminal himself. I believe he tortured and killed german prisoners of war. Now while I do agree that he is a great warrior because without leaders like him I'd probably be typing german right now, I also can't help but disagree with his methods.

The Gaesatae, a celtic warrior. from the website of a mod that actually did some research on the subject (though i don't know their source) :
Historically, the Gaesatae were Gallic naked religious fanatics. Their skill was a source of terror, and their frightful appearance shook many. Most horrifying, even beyond their size and skill and terrifying cries, was their seeming invincibility. A chemical they used allowed them to brush off and ignore any pain. They were remarked to do things such as rip javelins that had struck them free from their bodies, and hurl them back, and continue to fight with gashes and wounds that would have surely fell a normal man. They were Hannibal's favored Gallic mercenaries, and were used as his personal guards, as they were so devoted and trustworthy, as well as brave and skilled.
Not posting a pic, thank you very much.
Funny that apparently Hannibal's personal gards were stark naked...
yeah it's video game stuff, but like i said, that's a mod that was insistent on doing research on absolutely everything they were doing. quite a job they did, overall.

Sorry, you're not even close. classical Hoplites used much larger shields and much shorter spears, whereas the "phalangites" pioneered by Alexander's father used the 3-7 meter sarissa, which the greek city states only adopted in modified form much later.
The film 300 is terrible inaccurate though, that much you got right.
I'd have to go with Persian and Medes horse archers with composite bows...Because there is nothing more badass than to charge your enemy with a horse and shoot at him with expert marksmanship, at the same time!

I wouldn't bet on it. Their military strength in battle may have been in a phalanx but that certainly doesn't mean that a Spartan hoplite couldn't hold his own in a one vs. one scenario.
Pankration was a "sport" for the ancient Greeks, and it was intense to the point where it would make MMA look like a sissies activity. They may have run around in togas and the like but they could most certainly hold their own.

don't get me wrong, I'm not saying a spartan would be weak in a 1 on 1 scenario
I'm just saying training to fight in a 1 on 1 scenario and be the very best in 1 on 1 combat (which would probably even vary depending on the armaments and training of the opponent one would face) is an entirely different subject when compared to the theory of how one should fight within a large cohesive force. hell you're not even going to have one best soldier in a 1v1, in reality warrior "a" probably has an advantage over "b", who probably has an advantage over "c" etc etc

You guys do realize there was a show on Spike TV called the Deadliest Warrior. Both warriors did incredibly well:
Spartan vs. Samurai (http://www.spike.com/articles/yznjuy/deadliest-warrior-winners-bracket-show)
This is a real strength vs strength match-up between two warriors who would absolutely never back-down, retreat or surrender.
A Spartan was the ultimate soldier who trained from childhood in the ways of war. They were known throughout the ancient western world for their battle-hardened training and for their mantra of no-retreat, no-surrender.
The Samurai were elite warriors who mastered a large array of weapons and lived their lives according to the highly ethical code of Bushido. Like Spartans, Samurai fought to the death. The Japanese believed that, in battle, a single Samurai was the equal of twenty regular soldiers.
Match-ups Defenses Bronze vs. Banded The Spartans had a bronze kit that covered their shins, torso and head but their defenses really centered on the massive shield they carried. Samurai used leather and banded-steel plates to protect their bodies and a wide sloping helmet to protect their head and neck, but their real defense was speed and skill. Edge: Even
Close Combat Xiphos vs. Katana The Xiphos is a wicked little sword, but the Katana gets the edge for the superior length and quality of its folded steel blade. Edge: Samurai
Mid-Range Spear vs. Naginata The Naginata is quick and deadly, but the Spartan Spear is 8' of death. Edge: Spartan
Long Range Javelin vs. Yumi The Javelin can be thrown from behind a shield, but the Yumi is far more deadly and accurate at longer ranges. Edge: Samurai
Special Shield vs. Kanabo The Kanabo is a devastating weapon, but the spartan shield can take serious punishment and deal out death blows as well. Edge: Spartan
Prediction: Another very close battle here but I'm giving the edge to the Spartan due to his devastating combination of Shield and Spear. With no shield of his own, a Samurai will be at a great disadvantage against the Spartan when it comes to mid-ranged combat.

They were just so effective. They took years of practice to train, and had incredible range and accuracy. Better range and accuracy than guns did for a long time, the only downside was it was easier to buy guns than train a someone for years to use a longbow.

favorite warriors were probably the roman legionaries, the tower shield/gladius and pilum is a pretty awesome design and is professional looking.

I came in pretty much just to comment on what you said... U said the wings are useless.. war is a lot about freaking out your enemy.. in Vietnam the Vietcong used to mutilate the enemy soldiers after they died just to psych out the enemy soldiers.. it was pointless to do so , and if they where doing it and our troops found them they would have been dead, but they took the time to do this to freak out the enemy soldiers like I said. This has the same purpose The wings look useless to you because we see them just as wings. But in those days the more fierce you looked helped. Psychological is a WARFARE ... u say useless but that can help win battles. Also war crys you dont have to scream when ur going into battle as a warrior , but they do to make themselves seem tougher, and to make it sound like there is more of them. On a Samurais helmet / mask some of them have horns coming out of the top like the devil would... they didn't serve a point in the battle, but it made them look fierce and scary. Ninjas didn't have to wear masks... Vikings didn't have to drink out of there enemies skulls... Hawaiians warriors didn't have to have tattoos on there face... I mean I can go on and on about these type of things. You say "useless" but in enemies eyes it made a point.
