Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |

400 mSv rated around plant #2 (I think 2). Insane.. thats quite a jump.

He, most likely, posted in the wrong thread.

Radiation levels within 20km are high enough to cause infertility, did I hear that right? That's more serious than I thought.
|
What kind of 'protective gear' are they talking about? I never heard of suits that protect against hard radiation aside from sealed suits that prevent contamination, but that doesn't help against radiation.

Flash is good enough to be posted in any thread.
Anyways, keep in mind that distance is a huge factor. We're talking about reactors from the same site having differences of 400 mSv -> 100 mSv, and then at the main gate it would be 1000 uSv. That's not good for the people working there, but it is miniscule 20km away.

No, interestingly the 400 mSv were measured at #4 which is currently on fire. But that's even worse, because if it was at #2 it would have been easier to pinpoint the cause.
We don't have enough information about the situation at #4 right now, and I'm going to retract my previous statement that the fire is not an issue, after seeing those readings.

It's directed at the guy that made an illogical deduction relating to the reactors. Does anyone have an opinion on the evacuation radius? People within 20 miles are supposed to evacuate, but people within 30 miles aren't supposed to leave their house? Kinda sounds like people living within 30 miles should be away from there but it's too dangerous to even step outside... Plus, is 30 miles really far enough?
Also, since Japan isn't that big (has been compared to the size of California), is it possible that the evacuation radius exceeds what is possible for them to move beyond, without getting on a plane or a boat...

Japanese PM has gone on TV to address his nation. He has ordered all workers to abandon the Fukushima plants.
Did I hear that right from the japanese report?

I didn't hear that...the stream right now is saying that workers in rad-suits are currently trying to put out the fires.

What report? He was just on live for a press conference and said almost nothing new.

Thanks for that correction.

No. He has said that they have evacuated the non-essential personnel from the site, 50 workers remain to continue with the operations.
Edit: Which was already known before. The only new thing that the PM himself said was the announcement to the people in the 30km zone and the fire at #4.

Protective Gear will help ... alpha rays cannot really pass through your skin, beta rays will go a little further and can probably cause burnings, skin cancer and so forth ... nothing can stop gamma rays completly though ... so no against gamma rays no gear will help except a VERY thick wall of lead ... also gear will keep iodine, cesium, strontium s.f. away from the inside of your body because there is where they actually do their dmg ... radioactive iodine will be absorbed by the thyroid, while cesium and strontium (because of their similarities to calium) will be absorbed in the muscles and skeleton ... there they will do the most dmg

2:41 DJ: Radiation 400 Times Legal Limit Measured Near No. 3 Reactor At Fukushima - Kyodo ------------------------------

This is where the really scary part stars to be honest, they have 4 reactors to control with radiation leaking as it is. At some point, they can't keep sending in engineers to fix shit, and they'll have to rely on the cores melting down in a controlled setting.
Every redundancy so far has failed, and I'm not very hopeful that the containment vessels will hold, after quakes, explosions, fires and 1980s design, I think its a very safe bet at least one will fail.

Japanese weather doesn't seem as impressive cause they measure in Celsius.
