Crisis in Japan - Page 130

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I was under the impression all reactors were shut down after the quake and before the tsunami hit. There is no _cold_ shutdown in any of the reactors, that's for sure.

I believe there was a 3rd power plant that also reported a state of emergency as well, but haven't heard any problems / updates yet

Really hope that's true. Watching al jazeera english live stream atm and they are reporting that operators at the 4th reactor are requesting the military to put out the fire... This is like the perfect shitstorm in japan. Really hope nothing else happens...

Correct. Tokai #2 has also a problem with one of their cooling system pumps, but apparently the backup systems are working fine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onagawa_Nuclear_Power_Plant "A fire from the turbine section of the plant following the 2011 Sendai earthquake was reported by Kyodo News.[1] On March 13, 2011, levels of radiation on site reached 21μSv/hour, a level at which Tohoku Electric Power Company were mandated to declare state of emergency, and they did so at 12:50, declaring the lowest-level such state. Within 10 minutes the level had dropped to 10μSv/hour.[2][3][4] The Japanese authorities assume the temporarily heightened values were due to radiation from the Fukushima I nuclear accidents and not from the plant itself.[5][6] On March 13 20:45 UTC, the IAEA announced that radiation levels at the Onagawa plant had returned to normal background levels" Actually NHK Live just mentioned the last reading was 5.7μSv/hour at Onagawa

![]() High radiation near the plant (limiting, possibly disabling rescue operations there soon), a fire and another explosion, all while the wind decided to turn south, sending radioactive particles towards the tokyo bay..things could get really ugly soon..you just can't evacuate 40 million people and more. Let's just hope that none of the units ejects huge amounts of its inventory into the air. At least the second plant has been cooled&stabilized, so if they have to evacuate that area too at least nothing should happen there. btw>The nervousness of the translator is quite disturbing. I don't even want to know how scared the people must be.

""Most of the shops are closed and quite a few Japanese people have left Tokyo to stay with relatives further west." Furthermore Reactor No. 3 still doesnt seem to be stable as opposed to what has been suggested in this thread before according to: "Radiation is 400 times the annual legal limit near Fukushima's reactor 3, the Kyodo news agency reports." If im correct No. 3 runs on plutonium which makes this by far the most dangerous reactor.

I'm not too up to date on the situation besides this thread but all I hope is that they can prevent a meltdown from happening and tainting the area with radiation for years to come. Edit : Reading about the wind, I hadn't really thought about it enough. I guess that could definitely be a worst case scenario if Tokyo has to be completely evacuated.

I'm unable to find real confirmation. It was mentioned on both the yoksonews and NHK stream once, but now NHK is back to reporting about the fire.
