Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.
Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true. |

Its a possibility (finnish media is also saying so, so is the big news like bbc etc). Haiti and chile had some aftershocks after the first big ones.

This number have been mentioned quite some time now. So it should be right. At least I haven't heard anything against it. Aftershocks are quite common

its quite normal that there are several less intense aftershocks after an earthquake. I don't know if it was caused by a tectonic slide or volcanic activity, but I'm sure they cohere.
I'm trying to imagine a world in which mankind sticks together and puts aside politics, religion and profit to help each other. Kind of hard to keep this picture focused nowadays...

Isn't that kind of what the Japanese have done when homeless people are helping middle class stay warm, and people are standing in line patiently to buy food instead of looting. Stores are lowering prices instead of jacking them up (like we saw during Katrina in the states), and people still stop at stop signs even when there is a tsunami rolling through town. It's heartwarming.

why do they always build dangerous nuclear facilities at earthquake sites, there is one like right next to the san andreas fault too : /

The whole of Japan is on or close to the "ring of fire", basically a bunch of tectonic plates moving around. This means Japan as a while is suscptable to earthquakes. What do you expect Japan to do? Build them in Australia? They have to build them close to the place where the power is needed. Also, Japan has no coal or natural gas, the usual drivers for power plants. Your question comes across as really naive and uninformed.

The entire nation of Japan is an earthquake site lol.

The magnitude wasn't "upgraded", it was given a different number by a different organization. The US Geological Survey number, which you had been using in the title of the thread and which was bigger than any of the other estimates at the time, hasn't changed from 8.9 yet.

My thoughts are with Japan, I wish I could go there and help out.

They're built very well to withstand quakes.

Upon first sight, I thought this was a tracklist of an after earthquake rave or something...

they said on czech news that according to experts, there's around 70 % probability of another massive earthquake.. did they just randomly make it up or someone else heard this on news also?
Yeah thats true, i watched the live report from some conferences in Japan.

Japan upgraded earthquake from 8.9 to 9.0 They said it was much more worse then they imagined afterwards.
Btw. any new news about the reactors?

Some media groups claim a meltdown, others claim a meltdown imminent, others claim fearmongering about a meltdown.
There's not much transparency from the government, so no source is definitively correct.

its actually a 9.0 compared to the reported 8.8 which is 2 times the intensity of a 8.8 o.O hope their all ok ...
