Unlike some other countries, people in japan cares about each other and not over some
calculated magnitude numbers...

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members. Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

In fact I thought the initial breaking news coverage to be quite confusing and poorly done. It seemed that media outlets/broadcasting stations were trying to exaggerate the extent of the true magnitude of the earthquake. For example the anchor would say "8.9 earthquake" and the caption says 7.9 while the embedded live footage from NHK says 8.8. This was also true for the death toll. I recall the cbc anchor claiming that "over 1000 confirmed dead" and they switch to a japanese correspondent who is like "160 confirmed dead, 650+ missing".

2042: Professor Patrick Regan, radiation and environmental protection expert from Surrey University, has told the BBC that it appears none of the secure vessels holding radioactive material at the reactors in Japan has broken, and "it looks like the worst is over".

The magnitude is a necessary factor in calculating the risk and magnitude of impending aftershocks. It's more important than one might think. Right now, according to NHK, as of the reclassification from 8.8 to 9.0 (USGS measured 8.9; Japan measured 8.8), it's estimated that there's a 70% risk of another M7+ in the next 2 days, and a 50% risk in the 3 days following.

Unlike some other countries, people in japan cares about each other and not over some calculated magnitude numbers... Looking through the posts you are referring to, none of the posters are downplaying how this has affected the japanese people. You have a point when saying that "small" diffrences in magnitude make little difference when you look at the big picture. But the fact that the numbers posted by certain organisations are different, is centainly mentionworthy - especially in this thread. And lastly, no one has said that japanese people don't care about each other, from what I've read, the opposite actually seems to be the case. So, I feel like "Unlike some other countries", is an unfair and unnecessary comment to make.

Daiichi reactor exploded 0.0 yesterday, trying to find source, i read it on the newspaper EDIT:bingo! LATIMES another reactor fails And aparently the core of the reactor is still... intact? Some rods have partially melted, and there's a small amount of cesium/iodine in the air right now. A few hundred people have been exposed, and they're being treated for iodine exposure as a precaution, though at 1,015uSv/hr, the amount of exposure they've received isn't so bad that there'll be lasting effects.

Haiti was a "mere" M7 and it killed over 300,000 people. That's not the point. The point is that seismic data helps to predict aftershocks, and that's necessary for ensuring that the people that are still alive are as prepared and safe as possible.

The latest eruptions began on January 19, 2011, and the alert level was raised to 3 on January 27.[1] As of February 2011, a lava dome was growing in the volcano's crater.[3] On March 13, 2011, the volcano is reported to have erupted again in the aftermath of 2011 Sendai Earthquake that occurred on March 11. Whether the cause of the eruption is related to the earthquake is still unknown.[4]" It's really not the end of the world. Yet.

A 9.0 Earthquake would wipe out any city that isn't in Japan, any, take your pick. New York? Paris? London? Beijin? Moscow? Having a triple digit deaths due to the quake(most of the deats are due to the Tsunami) is astounding at least.

The US Geological Survey number, which you had been using in the title of the thread and which was bigger than any of the other estimates at the time, hasn't changed from 8.9 yet. I will update the title with the number given by the Japanese source, which has been what I have been doing all along. Thanks for your input though.
