A ceasefire must be implemented immediately. That means all attacks against civilians must stop. Troops must stop advancing on Benghazi, and pull back from Ajdabiyah, Misurata and Az Zawiyah. Water, electricity and gas supplies must be turned on to all areas. Humanitarian assistance must be allowed to reach the people of Libya. Colonel Gaddafi continues to defy the world. His attacks on civilians go on. Let me be very clear about the position of the United States. We will support an international coalition as it takes all necessary measures to enforce the terms of resolution 1973. America has unique capabilities and we will bring them to bear, to help our European and Canadian allies and Arab partners stop further violence against civilians, including through the effective implementation of a no-fly zone. Both France and the United Kingdom, along with other key partners, have stepped forward to play a leading role in enforcing 1973. We have said from the start that Arab leadership and participation in this effort is crucial. We look to them for continued leadership as well as active participation and leadership going forward. Also reports on french carrier Le Monde reports that the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier will leave port in Toulon tomorrow and take up a position off the coast of Libya as of Tuesday. edit: Russia says it regrets the West's decision to take military action in Libya.

It appears Gaddafi forces have fallen into an ambush and the freedom fighters have seized many vehicles Italy offers its bases and doesn't rule out military intervention Italy is offering its military bases as potential command centres for the operation. Silvio Berlusconi said: 'I have propsed that the military coordination of the operation be in the NATO base at Naples. For the time being we are making the bases available, but if they [the coalition] request it, even military intervention is possible'. Also: Several hundred Gaddafi supporters are said to have gathered outside the Libyan leader's residence in order to protect him from air strikes.

Escape was difficult for the families that fled. Roads through the old city – the port and its elegant Italianate architecture – were blocked with cars, forcing traffic to zigzag through the streets before they could reach the outskirts. Every corner was armed. Men in balaclavas directed traffic, clutching grenades with one finger already looped through its pin. Most had AK-47s. Others were armed with anything they could find – old World War Two Sten guns, machetes, baseball bats, shotguns, Molotov cocktails – whatever might slow Colonel Gaddafi's advance through a densely populated city of almost a million people. Also rebels with captured tank: ![]()

This situation is intolerable. Muammar Gaddafi and those executing his orders must immediately end the acts of violence carried out against civilians, to withdraw from all areas they have entered by force, return to their compounds, and allow full humanitarian access. We assure the Libyan people of our determination to be at their side to help them realise their aspirations and build their future and institutions within a democratic framework. "We recall that UN Security Council resolution 1973 does not allow for any occupation of, or attempt to occupy the Libyan territory. Our commitment is for the long term. edit: interesting article on Libyan refugees fleeing Benghazi Click here

"The bombing has begun and so has the backlash. Arabic websites are starting to call for a Jihad to protect Libya from the "infadel" invasion and we arent even a day in to the conflict. The world powers just ****ed up one more situation, bravo..."

Good thing Russia's sane at least, they should put an end to this, but i doubt they care that much, i'm sure they got a fair deal by french/americans to allow this. This reminds me of Serbia when they got a shitload of money to keep yelling but doing nothing.
