I didn't see a thread on this one, and thought I would put this up:

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/02/201121716917273192.html

If you can see the twitter feeds on that, people are saying their death toll is already above Tunisia's. Apparently protesters are being shot by snipers and fighting back with rocks.

Edit: from twitter accounts, it seems like Libya's govt brought in Bayda (not entirely sure what that means) mercenaries to attack protestors, but in some towns the protestors have driven the mercs out. They're saying in some places 50%+ of the population is out protesting.

"Day of rage". That sounds like yesterday when I tried to ladder.

This sure got violent quickly though, why would they put out snipers if the protests begun peacefully?

He also said that the government had released 30 people from jail, paying and arming them to fight people in the street.

What the fuck?

Edit: I guess the protests never really were peaceful. But wow. Those people on the streets are BRAVE.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than you!

Gaddafi is a serious nut case. I'm neither surprised that there are tons of people who hate him nor that he resorts to violence to stop protestors...

This reminds me of a thread I once made about my favorite dictator:
Libya "bans" EU-citizens

Col. Gaddaffi is the king of kings of Africa (according to Egypt's FORMER president), the longest serving president atm. 42 fucking years. That's like double the age of the average TL user.

I think what governments in Libya , Bahrain, Yemen Iraq and Iran are doing is exactly what the Egyptian and Tunisian government did. 1) Make spontaneous pro government protests. 2) Release convicts from prison and let them "handle it" 3) Send in police officers wearing civilian clothes to confuse the shit out of you. 4) Send the army in and remove all police.
Don't be surprised if they add something to the mix. In the end its power over people to them.

"Day of Rage" was the name of 25th January, the day that started the Egyptian revolution.

Britain is revoking arms exports to Libya and Bahrain, and possibly(??) to Yemen.

Usually it ends when the military rolls in, if they are loyal to the regime. It also, generally, means very very bad things when you allow the military to enter a city. These things weren't true for Egypt and made their revolution a lot less bloody than it could have been.

Edit: I have no idea what the Libyan army's relation to the government is or where their loyalty lies.

According to twitter feeds, their internet is totally down, news stations cut off, and the govt is having people shot in the head while praying, sleeping, etc. Spread the word, and pray for Libya today.

Libya Live Blog
7:20 am Al Jazeera is speaking with a number of sources inside Libya, including Fathy Terbil, a lawyer who represents relatives of more than 1,000 people killed in an alleged 1996 "massacre" at Abu Salim jail in Tripoli. Terbil's arrest earlier in February helped ignite the ongoing protests.

Speaking with Al Jazeera via an Internet phone on Saturday, Terbil said there had been a "massacre" in Benghazi, the country's second-largest city. Security forces were using civilian cars without license places to drive about the city and open fire; dozens had been killed, perhaps hundreds.

"People here are living under very tough circumstances," Terbil said. Residents can't move about or drive their cars due to the random gunfire. Alleged mercenaries wearing yellow construction helmets - reported by numerous sources in the country - are roaming about and attacking protesters, he said.

TRIPOLI, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Libya's anti-government protesters hanged two policemen in the eastern city of Al-Baida, Oea newspaper reported Friday on its website.

The two policemen who were trying to disperse protesters that swept the city on Wednesday were hanged after protesters managed to hold them, Oea newspaper reported on its website.

Meanwhile, the paper said that a group of protesters killed the managing director of AL-Galaa hospital in downtown Benghazi, Libya 's second largest city. The victim's body was tortured, it added.

This is bad. I won't ask myself why there's going to be much more force used by police/military. There is always a problem with angry mobs doing absolutely absurd things like that instead of just protesting. Now you understand why policeman/soldiers will shit their pants and shoot to kill in some cases. Unlike the police/army the mob is not coordinated, the mob is driven by fury, it does not think. God help if the police/army will become driven by fury or revenge wish or even worse... fear.
They first ignore you. After they laugh at you. Next they will fight you. In the end you will win.

Well, I`ve spent some time in Libya as a kid and I think the situation there is a bit different from what happened in tunisia/egypt. People there really liked Kaddaffi. At least he was investing some of the petrol money back to the country economics. But that was 15 years ago, so I guess things have changed.

The number dead probably ends in 'thousand' by now. News reports are well behind the rumoured developments reported elsewhere (like whole cities and airports being taken over by protestors).

It's now civil war. Neither side is being peaceful.

Austrian media reports that apparently there are massacres taking place with the government even using heavy weapons like machine guns and missiles against demonstrants. The death toll seems to be around 200.

Italian media reporting sources claiming that RPGs are being used against demonstrators as well.
The situation is pretty damn serious, and may very well turn out to be the bloodiest of all the recent uprisings.
