The number strikes me as high even by historical standards. I'm sure there are plenty of examples from the 20th century, but the unfortunate thing is that so much has been buried under the hands of dictators. Poznan 1956 Bloody Sunday 1972 Also check out some of the violence in the US in the early 20th century regarding union busting (although union busting typically involved a corporation hiring people to do the busting as opposed to a government).

I won't ask myself why there's going to be much more force used by police/military. There is always a problem with angry mobs doing absolutely absurd things like that instead of just protesting. Now you understand why policeman/soldiers will shit their pants and shoot to kill in some cases. Unlike the police/army the mob is not coordinated, the mob is driven by fury, it does not think. God help if the police/army will become driven by fury or revenge wish or even worse... fear. Do you think it's wise to take the word of a Chinese newspaper at face value? My guess is they're going to be demonizing these protesters as much as possible, just so their own populace doesn't get inspired by them. No one should he surprised by Libya's violent response to the protests, Qaddafi is about the worst of the worst in terms of dictators there (now that Saddam is dead), essentially a psychopath. Good luck to the people of Libya but with that madman standing in their way they're going to need a lot of luck to succeed.

The real question now is, can he make reality of his threats? Because from the looks of it that means fullblown civil war. Otherwise it's probably just over.

Edit: and jeebus, his closing, or whatever you call it, about fighting to the last man... and calling pretty much everyone other than loyalists as traitors. Sheesh!

I'd trust a Chinese newspaper about as much as I'd trust an American one... and if you think there's going to be a populist revolt in China anytime soon, well, starting to look like you don't know very much about the world.

I really hope some sort of reasonable dialogue can happen. That would be best-case scenario.... but good luck getting that with Gaddafi. The man is a power-hungry nutjob. This is the guy who said that Obama has an inferiority complex because he's actually an Arab. As you can see, a complete lunatic.

![]() Reactions to Saif's speech in Libya From the live blog of Al Jazeera "Citizens tried to attack the army and they were in a situation that was difficult. The army was not used to dealing with riots," he says. "Libyan citizens died and this was a tragedy. "There is a plot against Libya. People want to create a government in Benghazi and others want to have an Islamic emirate in Bayda. All these [people] have their own plots. Of course Arab media hyped this. The fault of the Libyan media is that it did not cover this. Libya is not like Egypt, it is tribes and clans, it is not a society with parties. Everyone knows their duties and this may cause civil wars. Libya is not Tunisia and Egypt. Libya has oil - that has united the whole of Libya. I have to be honest with you. We are all armed, even the thugs and the unemployed. At this moment in time, tanks are driven about with civilians. In Bayda you have machine guns right in the middle of the city. Many arms have been stolen. No one will come to Libya or do any business with Libya. We will call for new media laws, civil rights, lift the stupid punishments, we will have a constitution... We will tomorrow create a new Libya. We can agree on a new national anthem, new flag, new Libya. Or be prepared for civil war. Forget about oil. The country will be divided like North and South Korea, we will see each other through a fence. You will wait in line for months for a visa. The Libyans who live in Europe and USA, their children go to school and they want you to fight. They are comfortable. They then want to come and rule us and Libya. They want us to kill each other then come, like in Iraq."
