Welcome bloodbath.

I have a really bad feeling about Libya. I think it will be way worse than in Egypt or Tunisia where the army was smart enough to not mass slaughter protesters. Libya is a complete mess, tribe system, people less educated than in Tunisia and ton of oil.
Add some islamists in the mix and enjoy your civil war.

How many tribes are actually in Libya? On the side of the protesters there are five so far.

The real question is how dedicated is the army?

There are two prime examples in the Middle East. In '79, when the Islamic Revolution started, the Shah ordered the Secret Police and paramilitary forces to stomp the Revolution into the ground. What ended up happening is that these people eventually got tired of shooting unarmed protesters.

In the '80s in Iraq, there were similar uprisings against Saddamn. He quelled the revolts in a very similar manner except that they didn't get tired of killing civilians. Eventually, those in revolt decided it would be better to slaves under Saddam than dead.

That's how it's going to play out in Libya.

It's so strange that in Iran they are grouping together to do one massive ceremony to commemorate the death of one single protestor, and in Libya Gaddafi has already had 300 protestors murdered and 900+ wounded.

On the run: Gaddafi flees Tripoli as protesters set the Libyan parliament building alight and crowds celebrate victory in Benghazi

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1358972/Libya-protests-Gaddafi-flees-Tripoli-parliament-building-set-alight.html

I guess killing hundreds protesters doesn't work after all. Gaddafi reportedly went to Sebha, the town where he grew up, to "prepare for a last stand," the story states.

TRIPOLI, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Libya's anti-government protesters hanged two policemen in the eastern city of Al-Baida, Oea newspaper reported Friday on its website.

The two policemen who were trying to disperse protesters that swept the city on Wednesday were hanged after protesters managed to hold them, Oea newspaper reported on its website.

Meanwhile, the paper said that a group of protesters killed the managing director of AL-Galaa hospital in downtown Benghazi, Libya 's second largest city. The victim's body was tortured, it added.

This is bad. I won't ask myself why there's going to be much more force used by police/military. There is always a problem with angry mobs doing absolutely absurd things like that instead of just protesting. Now you understand why policeman/soldiers will shit their pants and shoot to kill in some cases. Unlike the police/army the mob is not coordinated, the mob is driven by fury, it does not think. God help if the police/army will become driven by fury or revenge wish or even worse... fear.

Do you think it's wise to take the word of a Chinese newspaper at face value?

My guess is they're going to be demonizing these protesters as much as possible, just so their own populace doesn't get inspired by them.

No one should he surprised by Libya's violent response to the protests, Qaddafi is about the worst of the worst in terms of dictators there (now that Saddam is dead), essentially a psychopath.

Good luck to the people of Libya but with that madman standing in their way they're going to need a lot of luck to succeed.

I'd trust a Chinese newspaper about as much as I'd trust an American one...

and if you think there's going to be a populist revolt in China anytime soon, well, starting to look like you don't know very much about the world.

Never said there WOULD be a populist revolt in china, only that the government forces must be worried about the possibility as they see all these dictators tumble. Do you think it's coincidence that this was in the news today?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12522856

Nor did I say anything about trusting US media, but in this specific instance I would say that Chinese media have a clear motivation to control the perceptions within their own populace of the events in Africa and the middle east.

I can't find reports of this elsewhere but if it's true then it's almost certainly the end for him, it's just a matter of time and how many lives it will cost before he's overcome. Go Libyans!

The Libyan protests are going absolutely nuts. Military defecting and such. Let's see if Gaddafi can even make it out alive.

I heard he is trying to make it to Venezuela, but pilots are refusing.

I really hope things don't turn worse there. I have a friend who went there a month back for school. I talked to him just before he left. My buddy who talked to him a couple days back says he hasn't left his house for a week other than to get food because he doesn't want to get hurt. My guess is he is going to be flying home soon. Nothing is worth the risk of staying there.

Gaddafi must be out of his mind even for his standards. How did he decide bombing his own people would be the best course of action? If the protesters get him they'll probably beat him to death on the spot.

Why isn't anybody reacting? Doesn't the US or UK airbases/carriers nearby? What are they waiting for? Blow any libyan military plane out of the sky..I really don't see what they are waiting for, it drives me mad.
