I think it will be way worse than in Egypt or Tunisia where the army was smart enough to not mass slaughter protesters. Libya is a complete mess, tribe system, people less educated than in Tunisia and ton of oil. Add some islamists in the mix and enjoy your civil war.

There are two prime examples in the Middle East. In '79, when the Islamic Revolution started, the Shah ordered the Secret Police and paramilitary forces to stomp the Revolution into the ground. What ended up happening is that these people eventually got tired of shooting unarmed protesters. In the '80s in Iraq, there were similar uprisings against Saddamn. He quelled the revolts in a very similar manner except that they didn't get tired of killing civilians. Eventually, those in revolt decided it would be better to slaves under Saddam than dead. That's how it's going to play out in Libya.

On the run: Gaddafi flees Tripoli as protesters set the Libyan parliament building alight and crowds celebrate victory in Benghazi http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1358972/Libya-protests-Gaddafi-flees-Tripoli-parliament-building-set-alight.html I guess killing hundreds protesters doesn't work after all. Gaddafi reportedly went to Sebha, the town where he grew up, to "prepare for a last stand," the story states.

Never said there WOULD be a populist revolt in china, only that the government forces must be worried about the possibility as they see all these dictators tumble. Do you think it's coincidence that this was in the news today? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12522856 Nor did I say anything about trusting US media, but in this specific instance I would say that Chinese media have a clear motivation to control the perceptions within their own populace of the events in Africa and the middle east.

I can't find reports of this elsewhere but if it's true then it's almost certainly the end for him, it's just a matter of time and how many lives it will cost before he's overcome. Go Libyans!
