I did mean to reply to him, obviously. Explain to me how I was "wrong."

ok then it wasn't an example of racism, it was an example of stupidity
most dogs r friendly to cats but shit every once in a while theres that random dog that tries to eat every cat
should we mandate that all dogs must be trained from childhood to like kitty cats?

I define myself with who I am. Thats the problem with all these fucking foreigners coming to Korea thinking they are the shit and/or thinking they deserve special treatment. They are all fucking idiots.
If you make even a slight effort to understand Korean culture and learn their language Koreans will take you in and accept you far more willingly than even their own people. If anything the racism here is positive so give me a fucking break u god damn stupid english teachers (or college professors as is the case here rofl).

Yep, wtf is up with those non korean speaking english teachers.

The article never said he didn't speak Korean. And how do you know if this guy is arrogant?

Convo with cab driver headed to US Embassy today:
와 한국말 진짜잘해요 -wow ur korean is good
-네 감사합니다 -TY
근데 미국에서 어디서 왔어요? -where in america did u come from?
-센디에이고요 -san diego
아 센디에이고! 거기 날씨가진짜좋고 부자들많고...부자이예요? -ah san diego! the weather there is really good and theres lots of rich people there...are you rich?
-아니예요 그냥 일반사람이예요 -no i'm just a normal person
그래? 부자 사람진짜 같애 -really? u look rich (WTF?)
-하하 아니예요 -haha no i'm not
Cab fare ended up being 12300. Gave him 20000 and got out without saying anything.
Someone's gotta defend the reputation of us non-koreans in korea against the idiocy of these english teachers. I personally believe I can take them all on myself.

There is a difference between justified dislike of immigrants who expect special treatment and the random harassment of non-korean individuals.

But anyways yes racism laws should be inplace to punish the few Koreans that are actually mind-fucked idiots (as there are these kinds of people at varying degrees in every country). I totally agree with this and am surprised Korea didn't have any lol.

honestly, every person I hear from who goes to teach in japan or korea, loves to complain about any other foreigner they see.
i think being the odd one out in such places as those doesn't make you want to share the experience.

rekrul ever thought of writing more about the insight on korean culture from westerner point of view? your random stories can teach a lot...
topic: the fact that the guy was Indian doesnt surprise me at all.... I think within the asian community (esp in states) there is a hierarchy towards who gets the most racist actions towards one another..

well out of the racist koreans, there are definitely more koreans racist towards people from the countries with brown or dark skinned folks than towards whites so you're right but in general actually you'd be surprised at how equally the non racist koreans treat foreigners
and i dont think not wanting to associate with something you've never associated with before makes you a racist...which is the case for a lot of koreans...how the fuk u supposed to know if that thing bites or not?
overall koreans live in their little korean world and anything not from it is 'different' and no law is going to change that
|
I hope these new laws will apply to Miari texas street workers, so huge black foreigners don't get denied there anymore and can dwell freely into Korean culture.
|
Those white folks that Rekrul is talking about might think that Korean Hospitality is equivalent to Filipino Hospitality.. (we treat all the foreigners here like Kings, well except for the part that they get robbed or extorted)
Well, I heard that some poorer south east asian peeps has a curfew in their apartments? is this a fact? Like they need to be in their apartments within 6pm...

As a Korean I gotta say racism in Korea is overstated in the above articles... During the Korean war our country formed close ties with the U.S. and other aid workers... Yes, it is true that non white foreigners are treated worse than white foreigners, but is America any better? In fact, is any country in the world any better in this aspect? (read gladwell's Blink. Black people are associated with negativeness due to the unfair history they have faced which paints them as a race with negative connotations). From the convos I have with my friends whenever we see a foreigner, my friends always seem to be at awe, and are more curious more than anything. They never say shitty derogatory stuff like "Look at that n*gg*r" or "Hey, you foreigner. Me first in line. Me korean". Fine, my friends and I prob don't represent the Korean population, but hey, there are always retarded racists everywhere. If you see TV in Korea, nowadays there are a ton of news encouraging foreigners from poor countries (mostly from south-east asian countries, where many women come to marry korean men) to learn Korean properly and be more fully integrated to our society. People like Hines Ward the football player help constantly promote anti-racism in korea.
Honestly, from the several countries I've lived in, Korea is one of the less racist countries (fine, me being korean by race may have blinded me, but I maintain my point). I believe the U.S. is worse than Korea in terms of racism. Look up the centuries it took for America to wipe out racist laws... speaking of which, KOREA HAS NO RACIST LAWS. That's why we didn't have any anti-racist laws... cause it was never a major social issue.

I think this is probably accurate and true for many countries in the world. Don't go somewhere and act like an ignorant asshole and your fine

Last Korean girl I dated told me how upset her ex-boyfriend was that she was now seeing a white person. As if it was a big shame and she told me like it was normal Koreans feel that way. That's at least the one time impression I got.
@win82 I think Korea has no racism laws, because they never had to deal with foreigners a lot before? I don't think there were a lot of Indian/Africans/Persians etc. in Korea before 1950. Why make a law for something that cannot exist.
Maybe the Koreans aren't racist, but they surely aren't hospitable. Going to Korea requires a little extra effort if you want to make it a pleasant experience.
Korea is still a great country which you can enjoy though. Great food and lots of people are nice nonetheless. Just don't be offended if someone ignores you, because you speak English^^ My trips to Korea were always great and I can not go further than left, right, thank you, in Korean.
I honestly don't know much about Korea to go further than assumptions. But I think Korean people appear to be rude/negative towards foreigners, because they feel uncomfortable dealing with them. They do not speak English properly and don't want to lose face. Could that be true, expert Rek?
