I'll try spectate some of you some time, some great scores in this thread. Feel free to add me (Yuugo on osu! aswell) and start a random chat, I'm always happy to talk to people! So my own thoughts on the team idea so far: I feel like it'll be more of a roundabout function of private group chats in the client. I don't really see how you can use a team in a game like osu, which is mostly singleplayer-based, as a way to improve your playing. You will need people with practically the same level and playstyle as you have and man, that's hard to find. Team battles in multi could be a thing though.. that might be interesting.

is there anything in particular that people do to get pp/ranked up higher? I just play whatever but it seems sometimes my rank is a bit higher than better players when I occasionally play multi
|
i do hd on songs too fast to dt, hd/dt on slow songs n fail at everything else.
an easy way to get pp is either by 3 modding hards, doing easy hd's, dt/hd's or just getting better in general.

If you do want to say anything based on ranking, keep in mind that the ranking is only correlated (not a one on one relation) with skill, and probably (although i dont have any proof) not too strongly. I even think looking at the accuracy of a person is better at assessing the player's skill at a certain map type, then looking at his ranking. Accuracy rather then score, because score is largely dependent on combo, which is quite variable.
I get pp largely from playing songs i think i should be able to fc. Most of the time i will within a few tries. I have got some pp after practice as well. In an attempt to get better at hr, I partly fc some easier songs with hr, to get used to the overall difficulty. Sometimes this results in an unexpectedly high rank and 1 or 2 pp.
Personally, i feel that focussing on improvement is 'better' than focussing on rank/pp. When you improve, your rank will follow. Apart from having fun ofcourse, if you're enjoying yourself to get a rank as high as possible, i'd do that

actually my accuracy is kind of crap since I try to beat the hardest maps I can and I kind of got screwed by a few scores since I never paid attention to it at first

just spam hards with a bunch of mods
that's how shadowsoul did it lolol

With this comparison, you know the person you played against did better then you (or not of course). Depending on the difference in accuracy (of the just played game), you can probably tell if the opponent is better or not at a certain map (-type). The total accuracies probably have little to do with skill. I wouldn't pay any attention to it, i think it's one of the worst methods to measure skill.

So I just grinded a song and finally got full combo I looked at my rank and was like sweet I rose 300 rank for that and then I looked at the first two digits and realized I actually dropped 700
fffff i hate this game + Show Spoiler +

Similar thing just happened to me. Was playing a series of songs and rose from about rank 35k to 28k. Took a break and came back to play some other random song, exited before it ended and my rank randomly dropped to 32k when my country rank and pp score hasn't moved. They weren't new songs or anything either. Pretty annoying.
Edit: After playing various new songs and getting decent scores only to have no rank change, I decided to go back to the songs I was playing to increase my rank before the plummet. Beat one of my old scores by 2% accuracy and gained 5k ranks again. This game...

Okay I've recently started playing osu, and I cannot complete a single insane level beatmap. I use left click/mouse, am I supposed to be using something else?
|
dont think you should be able to beat any insanes when you first start playing, but you probably should be using the keyboard for tapping

For some reason I can't get into the rhythm of using keyboard instead of tapping. Like the most I've gotten so far is 3/4 way through a 5star insane - Angel Beats Intro (Full)

You're not really expected to be able to beat insane songs if you just started, it's just something you need to keep practicing with. Just using the mouse won't get you too far though, you'll be limiting your capabilities with streams greatly as you just won't be able to click fast enough. Moving from the mouse to keyboard can be tricky, but you will get used to it. You'll also be able to play for a lot longer as your hand can get tired much more quickly if it's doing all the work from both moving and constantly clicking.
|
there is a very few amount of players that can actually play pure mouse, but yes, most people do indeed keyboard + tablet/mouse - just keep trying with it and you'll eventually get it.
it took me a long time before i could actually do insanes, but i had no prior experience with rythm games, and im terrible in general, so just keep at it and you'll suceed eventually
also - add me - "Nichlaes" (im creative i know)

It took me a few months to work up to passing Insanes. And I have years of rhythm game history.
The fastest way to learn is to constantly be pushing your skill. When you go through your songs, focus on the ones that you can only B or C, or even ones you fail, but can almost pass. You improve far quicker playing like that than if you just ground plays on easier stuff trying to nudge your top score up a bit. And practice takes time to give results.
Also, you may find yourself at a "skill plateau" where you continue practicing but can no longer seem to get better. the solution for those is more or less, take some breaks and play less, and find new stuff to challenge yourself with, change up what you play.
I play keyboard+mouse. I started out mouse only, but I found that having to use the same hand to click and aim simultaneously was really hard. I didn't know about using the keyboard till... I think it was Xafina who told me about being able to use the keyboard (I'm not sure) and I made the switch. Took some time to get used to, but being able to separate aiming from clicking makes it easier to split them up in your mind.
As you learn to play, you'll reach a point where you stop thinking about every circle and it becomes automatic to hit them. Once you hit that point, you should notice a considerable jump in skill (it might build up a bit gradually, but it should be noticeable very quickly).
I mostly play Osu!Mania now, but you can add me in game (same name).

Yeah, I have been playing for about a year now and only recently have been able to play insane songs effectively well. It's a slow process of learning but once you get it, it comes to you very quickly. Try using a single key on keyboard+ mouse on easier songs. Then move up to two key on the keyboard and alternating them.
|
I took me longer to get to easily passing insanes then anything past that point, so it's not weird and you're not really lagging behind. That said, i just did random stuff until then. Also, insane have a pretty wide range skillwise, so you might just have some of the harder maps. Although you have to play however you like, i'd at least try the keyboard if i were you. Almost everyone uses it. Not saying it's better, but most people find it very comfortable. (edit: i only read you first post, sorry)
What always helps me is to try and 'feel' the rythm. Sometimes, unclear patterns suddenly make sense. Also, my accuracy benefitted greatly from it.
In game, my username is yorickblabla, although practice offline a lot as well.
Edit: oh, and btw, what helped me significantly as well was dimming the background and disabling the map skins. Less distraction is more concentration. Have you tried getting some other skins? The (new) standard one seems to be okay, but i feel there are way better skins out there.
