And Yaqoob really enjoyed playing SF4 at our LAN yesterday. I think he lives in Toronto-ish, but maybe he'll drive over to learn the game with you, since he's never really played fighting games before (the same goes for Jesung). ![]()

The time window can be very short on some move so you have to practice for a while. Right after the focus animation start you dash foward or backward to cancel it.

god it's been a while, but i have been hearing wonderful things about SF4. is it really worth a start? i tend to takes things kind of far, when i start them so i'd prefer not to unless i know 1 the game is actually decent 2 that there is going to be a helpful community with regular lans/tourneys nearby. i don't mind being owned for the first month(s)

By my calculations, SF4 1st place (Justin Wong) won about $1,687. Considering he also won several other tournaments, iirc, he probably made almost $2000 this weekend -- travel costs excluded. There was also an SF4 tourney in Toronto this weekend, featuring 30 entrants and $105 for first place. Then there's another SF4 tourney in Hamilton coming up in 2 weeks which has 27 entrants so far. In fact, you're pretty much guaranteed at least 1 tournament per month, due to Hamilton's monthly tournaments. A similar thing may happen in Toronto, as well. To address your other point, considering how many high-profile players have picked it up and stuck with it since its arcade release 6 months ago, there's no question that the game is very good. Now personally, I always promote Arcana Heart as being more fun (for me, at least). With SF4 attracting so many new players, I'm hoping there will be some competitive ones who will get good and think, "Man, I wish this game was more offense-oriented / offered more mobility / didn't have revenge ultras / had better character balance / etc." and then I'll come in all like, "Hey, why don't you try this game instead..." ![]()

If you pick it up with any consistency, you're almost guaranteed to make friends with 10 people or more you'd probably never have met or realized you had so much in common with. To address your specific questions, people have been willing to part with $1-$1.50 per match at arcades to play sf4 when most games are $.25, should give you an idea of how well received it is. As for depth, the most all top players have been sticking with 4 consistently for as long as its been out. Also, people have been holding regular SF2 tournaments longer than starcraft, to give you an idea of longevity. Also, a good point Bill brings up, once you learn a fighter, you'll be able to quickly pick up most any other. If you can play sf4 well, you could transition other fun fighters like Arcana Heart, Marvel vs Capcom 2, BlazBlue once it gets a console release (this summer, I'm hyped xD), or any number of other games that take the staple core that SF2 set up and create amazingly different and fun games without changing much of the core at all.

The cheaper ones... imo don't buy those unless you have a proper table or something to place it on. Their lighter weight makes them very difficult to use on your lap.
