EDIT: Since the current recruitment target has not only been met, but also exceeded, further participation has been put on hold for the time being. Thank you to everyone who participated so far. Should the experiment become public again, this post will be updated.

Hello everyone,
My name is Szymon Filipek (PhD student at Myongji University), I am conducting an academic research study for my dissertation on how viewers experience StarCraft II content. I’m looking for participants who are willing to watch a short clip of a StarCraft II match and take part in an online survey. The study is conducted via GORILLA Experiment Builder and involves watching a short (3 minute) clip of competitive StarCraft II gameplay, followed by a survey comprising several single-choice questions. The study is open to anyone 19 years of age and over, limited to participants who have either played StarCraft II before, or watched StarCraft II-related content in the past. Participation is expected to take around 5-10 minutes. No personal identifying information will be collected, and all responses will remain confidential. Participation is entirely voluntary. Who can participate? • Anyone 19 years of age or older • Must have played StarCraft II or watched any StarCraft II–related content (streams, tournaments, videos, etc.)
What does the study involve? • Watching a clip of a StarCraft II esports match • Filling out a short survey • Approximate duration: 5-10 minutes • No personal identifying information will be collected, and all responses will remain confidential
Why participate? Your input will help improve understanding of how viewers engage with esports content and may contribute to enhancing the esports viewing experience in the future.
If you would like to participate, please click the link below to begin the survey: 👉 https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/530A02F7-DD85-4FC0-A470-FF41291723B1
Thank you for your time and consideration—and GLHF!

Tbh the first time I watch I didn't even see the ad at all, because I already trained myself to ignore ads/pop ups. I guess what doesn't help is that I don't care about watching SC2. Anyway, I watched again to pay attention to when/where the ad would pop-up.
Some feedback: IMO questions/answers can/should be worded/presented a little better so interpretation failure is reduced as much as possible. I also wonder how much black/white thinkers, such as myself, can scew your average with 1-5 ratings. I think another survey with yes/no instead would be interesting so you can compare both results.

I'm with this guy. I restarted the survey just so I could look for the ad. Maybe I would've noticed it under other circumstances, but I was very focused on the game because "oh it's the last gsl finals, I never watched it. What happens?" If it was a game of some boring ol NA players, I probably would've noticed the ad.

I'ma be real with you boss, I didn't even notice the ad in that 2.5 minutes. I've watched GSL too much and know what parts of the screen don't interest me and thus avoid them. Happy to help with the survey!

I noticed the ad but honestly would not have looked at it (known what it was) had I not glanced at the comments beforehand.
Needs a "what ad?" option tbh.

Filled out and submitted - definitely needs a "there was an ad?" option!

I didn't notice the ad but that is because I suspect that I couldn't see it in the first place. The browser on my phone (Samsung S23, Chrome) didn't allow me to see the video in full, and going full screen was not an option because that button was outside of my view, both in portrait and landscape. Tapping on the video only paused it. As such, I had to abandon the study. Apologies.
EDIT: I checked the video through the YouTube app directly and I saw the ad this time, and it was in frame of what I would have seen while watching it in the survey even if the sides were cut off. So, I did "see" the ad but I didn't actually internalize it at all, I was too busy trying to follow the situation. One of the first questions in the survey should have been "did you see an ad?" And then the remaining questions should have been collapsible as a result of that information IMO; collecting responses to those questions from people who didn't even notice the ad will mess with your data. Another approach could have been having "I didn't see an ad" as one of the responses for every ad-related question.

I'll be honest, I've gotten so used to ads flashing during a game like that and tuning them out that I dont even remember seeing the ad in the game.
