Hello there! Ladies, gents, and MDJ, I present to you the beginning of my Pokémon journey, chronicled for your viewing enjoyment. You may have followed the exciting SoulSilver playthrough by TheAntz. I intend to emulate that thread's style by giving the readers various poll choices to determine my progress, supplemented with screenshots and dumb hilarious captions.
But that is where the similarities end. For this is no mere child's quest to become the Pokémon Master of yet another region. No... this is a battle to survive the forces of evil. This is a struggle to overcome the countless hordes of merciless beasts that bar my way.
This is a Nuzlocke run on Pokémon Volt White.
Now, you may be asking yourself what a Nuzlocke run is, or what Pokémon Volt White is, or if you went to Burger King twice yesterday. I can't help you with that third question, but understanding the two former terms is vital to having any idea of what's going on.
A Nuzlocke run is a playthrough of a Pokémon game with self-imposed restrictions and limitations to challenge the player more than a standard game of Pokémon ever could. There are many variations of the Nuzlocke run, with tons of optional rules and challenges, but there are two basics Truths:
You may only catch the first Pokémon you encounter when arriving in each new area. If you fail to catch that Pokémon, tough luck; you cannot try again and must wait until you reach a new area to get another.
If a Pokémon in your party faints for any reason, it is considered to have died, and you must release it as soon as possible, without allowing it to contribute to your game in any way.
The astute reader will note that these limitations, particularly the second one, mean that a fascinating new aspect of Pokémon has been revealed: the player can lose! If you run out of usable Pokémon in your active party at any point during your journey...
"There are no continues, my friend..." - Revolver Ocelot
Unlike in a standard run, you cannot just keep ramming your Pokéfriends' skulls against your opponents until you finally brute-force your way to victory. A Nuzlocke run requires skill, strategy, and knowledge of your foes. You will be punished, severely, for your mistakes. One wrong move and you've suddenly lost a Pokémon permanently. Another wrong move and you have to start the entire run over.
This makes it hilarious to everyone else when the runner fucks up. Naturally.
As for Pokémon Volt White, it is a hacked version of Pokémon White Version, created by Drayano. It changes numerous aspects of the game to make it more difficult, but also more varied. Here is a non-comprehensive list of notable changes in Volt White:
Volt White has an entirely self-contained Pokédex -- in other words, all 649 Pokémon can be acquired without trading or events. This allows for drastically increased variety in gameplay, and it's very possible to never have the same party twice due to the sheer amount of options the player has at their disposal. Pokémon that normally evolve via trading or other special means have been given alternate ways to evolve, so trading is not required to obtain any Pokémon.
All Trainer battles have been redesigned to be significantly more difficult. Random Youngsters and Hikers will no longer be complete pushovers; in fact, many will prove quite difficult, as they possess more Pokémon with better moves at higher levels and with increased stats. Gym Leaders in particular are incredibly challenging opponents that will massacre the player's team if he or she takes them too lightly.
To balance the increased levels of all Trainers, the leveling scale across the game has been rebalanced. The player will naturally level up faster because the wild Pokémon encountered during normal game progression are stronger and provide more experience. Grinding is sometimes necessary to defeat a tough opponent, but a smart player can work around level disadvantages if they know what they're up against and play their cards right.
Many Pokémon have been given their Dream World abilities, even those encountered in the wild without the Dream World mechanic in the game. Dream World abilities are hidden, third abilities that can normally only be acquired by using Pokémon Black and White's online Global Link function, and are often very useful. Volt White enables the acquisition of these abilities without the Global Link.
Some Pokémon have been given updated movepools, stats, and even new type combinations. Only several Pokémon have been changed in this manner, but the changes always make sense and will make that Pokémon better than they were, without being overpowered. Well, mostly.
Several items, like the Bicycle and Fishing Rod, are given to the player much earlier than in the normal game, for the sake of convenience. Items that are scarce yet important, like evolutionary stones and fossils, can be found in greater quantities than before.
As you can see, a Nuzlocke run of Volt White can be very entertaining, and no run will ever be the same. With the sheer amount of different Pokémon and moves to work with, the player has many options with which to complete his or her quest. However, with the increased overall difficulty and the Nuzlocke restrictions in place, the player must be very careful, very smart, and a little lucky to make it through.
Shoutout to Robert Moran for inspiring me to try this run.

Rules of the Nuzlocke Run
The first two Pokémon I encounter in any new area are the only two Pokémon I am allowed to catch there. If I run into a Pokémon and fail to capture it, am unable to capture it due to a lack of Poké Balls, or choose not to capture it, I have effectively forfeited one of my two opportunities for a new Pokémon in that area.
For every Gym Badge I acquire, I will allow myself one "bonus chance" where I can capture a single Pokémon in any area I'd like. If I fail to capture the Pokémon for any reason, the chance is used up. Bonus chances cannot carry over once I acquire a new Badge; if I were to get two Badges in a row without using my bonus chance from the first Badge, I would not be permitted to take advantage of that. Use it or lose it.
Shiny Pokémon ignore Nuzlocke capture rules, and may be freely caught regardless, due to the rarity of such an event. If I somehow manage to find and capture two or more shiny Pokémon, only the first one I catch can be used in battle.
Should I encounter a wild double battle in tall grass, it only counts as one encounter despite there being two Pokémon in play at once. I am permitted to choose which Pokémon of the two I want to catch.
If I enter a new area and attempt to catch my two new Pokémon, and one of them is a Pokémon I have already caught, that encounter will not use up one of my two encounters, and I must defeat or run away from that Pokémon without catching it. If that Pokémon can evolve into two separate Pokémon, however, I must catch it, use up the encounter, and evolve both into their separate alternate final evolutions. For instance, if I encountered a Rattata when I already have one, I can run away or defeat it without using up an encounter. If I run into an Oddish and I already have one, I must catch it and evolve one into Vileplume and one into Bellossom.
I am allowed to take advantage of in-game trades, but each trade counts as one chance in the zone where I trade. For example, if I enter a new city where I can find wild Pokémon (because of fishing or whatever), and I conduct a trade in that city, I would only have one more chance to capture a wild Pokémon in that city after the trade.
If at any point I am faced with an HM obstacle that none of my surviving Pokémon can overcome (due to none of them being able to use the required HM), I am permitted to catch a single Pokémon that CAN learn the HM to progress. That Pokémon may not participate in the game in any way except to use that HM. Once I've bypassed the obstacle, that Pokémon must be immediately released.
Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and cannot be used in any way, including battles, trades, HM use, or otherwise. Dead Pokémon must be released as soon as possible. Any held items on a dead Pokémon may not be recovered.
If at any point in the game all Pokémon in my party are fainted, I must release three of my surviving Pokémon (from the PC box), discard 75% of my Poké Balls and potions, and discard 75% of my money as punishment. The second time I wipe, I lose the Nuzlocke challenge. This is the "second chance" clause. If I do not have at least four surviving Pokémon in my PC box at the time I invoke the clause, I automatically lose.
Revives and other healing items of that nature are obviously useless in a Nuzlocke run. However, I will also forbid myself from selling acquired Revives for money, and will instead discard them if I come across any.
The Master Ball must be used on Zekrom, the game's main legendary. In other words, I cannot use the Master Ball on any other Pokémon.
I may not game the system by reloading prior saves if I screw up.
I will play to win. Grinding will be kept to a minimum, but I will do whatever it takes within the confines of my imposed ruleset to emerge victorious.
Not a big fan of editing Pokemon types and especially stats, but still sounds fun enough to warrant a play. I want my useless Pokemon to remain useless, dammit.
edit: and yeah you're gonna die if this is anything like Pitch Black

contrary dracometeor pls
Only a few Pokemon receive type changes, and they always either make sense, or make the Pokemon more interesting to play. Things like the Shinx evolutionary line becoming Dark/Electric make Shinx so much more attractive to use. Likewise, Farfetch'd's stat and type changes make him really cool and fun to have on the team. If the general consensus is to avoid using Pokemon with changed types, then I will do so, but I think it'd make for more exciting gameplay.
You know, lady, I think that if they were my best friends, I wouldn't need to be introduced to them. Ever stop to think about that?
Damn right I do. I'm the goddamned Pokemon Master of like seven different regions.
I'd visit Alaska in the winter if it'd make you stop yammering.
Hi, buddy.
Wait, hold it. You get Pokemon too? I thought these were all for me.
I know, right? That lazy bitch is always making us wait. Remember that time we went to see the Transformers movie and she held us up for thirty minutes because she was busy inserting a —
Hi Bianca. You heard nothing.
You said it, bro.
Wow, first she makes us wait and now she's demanding to see MY Pokemon? Get out of my house.
If you knew they were sent to my place, why did you ask where they were? At least you had the decency to allow me first choice.
Sure. But before we do that...
... we need to make some important tweaks in the options.
Perfect!
Let's see what we got here, then.
Now, readers, time for you to decide which starter I get! There are some differences from the normal games, so those might influence your decision.
Snivy's final evolution is now Grass/Dragon instead of just Grass. It also has a chance to receive the Dream World ability Contrary, which makes all stat-lowering moves raise stats instead, and vice versa. Remember that I can't game the system for the chance at a better ability, so if I don't get Contrary, too bad for me.
Tepig's final evolution is now Fire/Dark instead of Fire/Fighting, which is a very welcome change. The last three starters have been Fire/Fighting, which annoyed me. Tepig also has a chance to receive the Dream World ability Sheer Force, which empowers all moves with secondary side effects by 33%, in exchange for removing the secondary chance.
Oshawott's final evolution is now Water/Fighting instead of just Water. It also has a chance to receive the Dream World ability Vital Spirit, which prevents it from being affected by the sleep status. This also means it can't use the move Rest or any moves usable only while asleep, but that's not a big deal. Its final form also gets Shell Smash, the most powerful stat boosting move in the game.
Let's see your votes, guys! You have 24 hours to vote for the starter I will use for the beginning of the game!
A Volt White Nuzlocke? Hope you love level grinding when your entire team ends up being Caterpies and Woobats
Also, Snivy and Oshawott learn Leaf Storm or Shell Smash at Level 74 so that won't be relevant for most of the game, they do get Swords Dance though which is nice
On August 01 2013 12:16 Rah wrote: I don't understand the rules completely. So you can only catch the first 2 pokemon you run into in an area? or can you choose 2 in the area?
The first two Pokémon you encounter in any new zone are the only Pokémon you are allowed to catch in that zone. This includes fishing, but does not include shiny Pokémon (because finding one is so rare, it acts like a bonus chance).
If you encounter a double battle in tall grass, that counts as only one encounter, and you can choose either of the Pokémon that appear to capture. I should have made note of that in the OP and rules, so I'll update it. Thanks for reminding me.
And don't listen to Brian. Snivy is best. Though in all honesty, I don't expect any of the starters to make it very far without dying.
Seems like a lot of luck then on what you run into first. I might try this though, would you recommend doing it with the original black/white before moving to volt? or does it work better with volt?

Oh right, I forgot, No$GBA is better for everything not Pokemon, but DeSmuME is required for Pokemon ><

I would consider myself a pretty good Pokémon player, so I think I have a good chance of making a dent in the game. I really don't expect to win, but I'll be disappointed with myself if I don't reach the fourth Gym at the least.
I'll take one vote from Tepig and give it to Snivy when the poll ends.
Okay, because you're trying to unfairly manipulate poll results, none of the choices will be altered because of supposed misclicks. Stop being assholes, thanks.

No really we are just trying to mess with you. I think it worked <3
Remember, folks, you have a little over 5 hours to vote for the starter I will begin my Nuzlocke adventure with! Oshawott is currently the leading Pokémon, so if you want to see Snivy catch up, now's the time! If you like Tepig, he's kinda boned in the polls, so gl with that.
Also, a note about Nuzlocke runs: Because Pokémon die when they faint in Nuzlocke runs, it is strongly encouraged for Nuzlocke runners to nickname each of the Pokémon they capture. This is to promote Pokémon-Trainer bonds and make you more attached to your allies; unique names will give more personality and character to your party members and makes it all the sadder if/when they fall in battle.
To this end, I will be allowing the readers to partake in nicknaming any Pokémon I catch in the course of the run, to facilitate interaction between the player and the readers. The nickname with the most votes over the span of a period of six hours will be chosen; if there's a tie, I will choose the name I like better. You are not permitted to use hateful terms or slurs in proposed nicknames, else I will simply ignore that nickname and any further nicknames you come up with. You may also not use the nickname "Patchzerg" unless the Pokémon being nicknamed is Farfetch'd, because holy shit he is so good in Volt White.
The starter Pokémon's nickname will be chosen by me, unfortunately for you. I have a special name in mind...
EDIT: To clarify what I meant by disallowing hateful terms or slurs in nicknames: I'm not a prude by any means, but I also want this game to be fun and light-hearted. Names like "Faggot" or other genuinely offensive words will not be tolerated. However, I am all for it if the name is crude but benign and funny, like "Poopfeast420". Be creative, be silly, be crass, but don't go overboard with the potty mouthing.
Out of curiousity, why'd you change it to first 2 pokemon in an area, the original nuzlocke rules are just 1, right? Just to give yourself a fighting chance? :D
I'll stay tuned to this, and also mad <3s to you, this post made me set up my own Volt White run! I'll keep checking this thread out though, will be interesting to see how far you make it.

In a word, yes. Volt White is way harder than Pokémon White, so if I don't have an extra Pokémon for every zone, I'll simply not have enough options or firepower to make it through. It's not a huge handicap either, because Gym Leaders and Rival battles in particular can and will decimate my team very easily without proper planning and skill. Because of that, I need a way to repopulate my team, and only one Pokémon per area simply doesn't do it quickly enough.
Thanks for the e-props. I hope to not die immediately so said props are not wasted. :o
Oh, and one more note about my ruleset that I forgot to mention: if I encounter a Pokémon that I already own when trying to catch Pokémon in a new area, that Pokémon cannot be caught, nor does it count toward my two chances per area. For instance, if I enter Route 2 for the first time and find a Rattata on my first encounter, but I already have a Rattata from Route 1, I must defeat or run away from the new Rattata instead of capturing it, and I will still have two more chances to catch Pokémon on Route 2. If, however, I find a Pokémon like Oddish (with two separate final evolutions), I must catch the second Oddish and evolve both of them into different final evolutions.
This shouldn't come into play too often, since each area has a very diverse set of Pokémon to catch, but it's there for the sake of promoting a varied and interesting team of Pokémon. No one wants to see four Rattatas and two Meowths getting smoked by a single Gastly because those are the only things I found.
Maybe this was BB/VW2 but iirc Samurott learns Sacred Sword in these hacks. Insta-voted. (If you keep him alive long enough for him to learn it, you're a hero.)

Yes we do. The point of following a nuzlocke run is to see someone die in a way that they are powerless to do something about.

That's certainly true, but I am of the opinion that many readers would find it boring to read about a run where the player only has like three Caterpies because of RNG. I don't think that's particularly fun to read about, and it's not really fun for the player either.
Your thoughts are valid, though. I'd like some other people to chime in on how they feel about that rule. If the majority say that the rule should not be used, I'll remove it.
I'd rather you keep the rule. It's more fun seeing a diverse party, and also more fun seeing your only Steel type get critted right before the Dragon gym.
I will definitly follow this with interest, I love these things, I also haven't played black/white ever so following this will hopefully teach me that I missed out
I've never nuzlocked. I was considering doing my first one on White. This romhack sounds really fun
I like Snivy the best, but Oshawott is just so hilarious in the anime. It was the only reason why I watched. Well I voted Snivy anyway since it's so cool
The only problem I have with nuzlocke runs, is can't you still grind forever/as long as you like to get enough levels to get by, pretty much no matter how tough it is?

I've never played Emerald 386, so I couldn't tell you. My guess is that 386 would be a lot harder if the same difficulty curve from Volt White applied, due to fewer options in moves, Pokemon, and held items, and the lack of the physical/special split introduced in Generation IV.
On August 02 2013 05:56 jrkirby wrote: The only problem I have with nuzlocke runs, is can't you still grind forever/as long as you like to get enough levels to get by, pretty much no matter how tough it is?
Yes, and I realize that's an issue. I am not going to grind an unreasonable amount; hell, I'd like to not grind at all if I can avoid it. If it comes to grinding, though, I will prohibit myself from overleveling the content I'm grinding for.
On August 02 2013 05:56 jrkirby wrote: The only problem I have with nuzlocke runs, is can't you still grind forever/as long as you like to get enough levels to get by, pretty much no matter how tough it is?
I'm watching a Plat Nuzlock where the guy is putting a cap on his levels. The level cap for him is the highest level of the upcoming gym leader's highest level pokemon.
It's a self-imposed challenge so you can impose as many constraints as you want. Some may want to impose additional limits, some may not. It's up to whatever the player feels will be the most enjoyable to them

In BB/VW the gym leaders' pokemon tend to be fairly high level, sometimes up to like 20 levels higher than whatever wild stuff you can face at the time. That plus the Gen5 experience formula makes it a terribly boring proposition to try to just grind through everything.

I haven't played through everything in Volt White, but I know how the first five Gyms scale in terms of levels. I may or may not have to do a little grinding, but since I know the target levels for the first five Gyms, I can keep myself from overleveling accidentally. Everything from there on is uncharted territory, and I'll have no idea what to expect. I'll do my best to avoid trivializing any encounter after the fifth Gym.
On August 02 2013 06:16 spinesheath wrote: Oh, I thought there were some rules limiting the usage of pkmn centers thus making it impossible to grind forever?
My personal rule for this is that Pokecenter visits cost highestlevel*10 money every time. But yea grinding is a huge issue for these things normally.
BEWARE: Meowths (at least all the ones on trainers early in the game) have Super Luck. I just died to 2 crits and 2 flinches from another trainer's Meowth really early in the game.

TACKLE SPAM!!
Suck it, Bianca! Now gimme your goddamned money.
Wow, what a gyp. Do you not have a job or something? This won't even get me a Super Potion, for Chrissakes.
... Bianca. You're going to be paying me back for a loooong time for this.
My poor TV... T_T
That's right, Cheren, tell the bitch off!
Well, I guess my room can't get in any worse shape. Bring it on, apple-head!

Dude, we know how to catch Pokemon. Weaken it, throw a Poke Ball, and hold B. Same way we've done it since Red and Blue. So skip the tutorial, please?
Wow, nice catch, Cheren. This Professor is obviously a sham, forgetting something so crucial.

HOLY SHIT A LILLIPUP! Wow, this is the best possible outcome for this route! Both Starly and Lillipup are beasts! :D
So let's get you started on your sex ed, Mino. You'll need to be prepared when we start filming.
Okay, that's enough rape. Let's toss the ball and hold B, per usual...
Excellent! This is a fantastic start!

Since I'm running this game in an emulator, I can use a code to rename a Pokemon whenever I choose. This is the only situation where I will use any sort of cheat code in this run.
No polls are necessary. Just post a nickname you want for either Starly or Lillipup, and I'll pick the nickname chosen the most for that Pokemon. Any ties will be decided by the name I like better.

Okay, I'm thinking I need to standardize the nicknaming procedure for this to work at all. From now on, I will only consider nicknames that have been posted with the following syntax:
<Pokemon original name> -> <Pokemon nickname>
So, if you wanted to vote for Starly to be nicknamed Coconut, you would post the following:
Starly -> Coconut
Any nickname suggestions from here on that do not follow this syntax will be discounted. Sorry, but there's too much confusion for me here.
On August 03 2013 02:42 OpticalShot wrote: I'll hold my vote until later, following the suggestion from last page that ixmike322 is most appropriate for a pokemon with a stache.
You're in luck! Lillipup's final evolution has a killer 'stache! Alternatively, you could wait and see if I find a Frillish, which evolves into the Pringles guy.
WHAT See what I mean by "not knowing beyond Gen 2" Okay okay fine.
Lillipup -> ixmike322 GOGOGO (if you do pick this name oh please for the love of God don't let it die because it must reach its majestic final evolution)

I will do my best to preserve the lives of all my faithful companions. No promises, but Lillipup is surprisingly durable for something you find so early on, so if I play well, it's very likely it'll make it to its final form.

Regrettably, we at Nuzlocke Laboratories strongly frown upon unnecessary euthanizing of our test subjects. However, we understand and appreciate your thoughts on the matter, and will take them into consideration should a test subject become singularly unable to perform adequately in a reasonable test environment.
In all seriousness, though, I have an idea. Robert Moran, the lovely fellow who inspired this run, has a mechanic in his Nuzlocke runs called "Honor Battles". If at any point in my run, I encounter a Pokemon that is the same species as the one I send out to fight it initially, an Honor Battle is conducted, meaning that my Pokemon must stay in the battle to the death to fight for its honor as a member of that species. I am not allowed to switch out my Pokemon for any reason. The battle will continue until one of the two participants is defeated. Honor Battles will also have special music that plays whenever I am forced into one.
It's a very fun and interesting twist that really shakes things up, especially in a tense battle where your Pokemon are wounded. What do you think, readers?
On August 03 2013 05:03 UniversalSnip wrote: what are the odds like of actually completing under this ruleset?
Not incredibly high, but I know enough about Pokemon in general to have a good shot at getting pretty far.
If you don't aim to change the world, you won't.
If you aim for defeat, you shall lose.
If you even dare to believe that you are a winner, you are a winner!
Volt White has a way of making you feel overly confident, then smashing you to pieces when you least expect it. The line between confidence and foolishness is very thin. I don't usually make conservative estimates, but I think it's warranted here.
Lillipup - Cocomutt Coconut has been suggested so why not Cocomutt?
Starly - Vince The highest flying Raptor in Raptors history.
Staraptor is incredible in normal playthroughs, perhaps the single best pokemon in history. You get it early, it has a really good movepool, and it has really good Attack and decent speed. But isn't it really risky in Nuzlocke? CC lowers defense leaving you very vulnerable if CC doesn't OHKO, and Brave Bird has that nasty recoil. It's not even very sturdy in the first place. Sweet pokemon, but I'd hate to get it in a Nuzlocke

Staraptor is relatively fragile, yes, particularly if he gets Reckless as an ability. But if he gets Intimidate as an ability, it becomes somewhat easier to switch in, and Brave Bird/Close Combat are powerful enough that if Staraptor is faster, he can usually sweep without taking a hit. He also gets U-turn, making him a fantastic lead; switch in, Intimidate, and U-turn if Staraptor can't do much to the enemy. You get a counter in almost for free on a weakened attack.
Again, he's definitely a glass cannon, and a Reckless Staraptor is very risky, but he's ridiculously good if you play your cards right.
have you run voltwhite before? If you are doing a nuzlocke, I dont see how you arent going to lose atleast SOME pokemon at gymleader 3 and up. Best of luck to you, sir!
oh. can i call dibs on future captures? If so, if you catch a Water starter, you must name it Squirter. Squirtle -> Squirter Totodile -> Squirter Mudkip -> Squirter Piplup -> Squirter Oshawott -> Squirter
Hahahahahaha, I started doing a normal run of this yesterday and I can't believe that I'm struggling with THE FIRST GYM LEADER. Can't wait to see how hard the rest of the game is.

Volt White isn't that hard if you pick the right team and abuse OP strats such as Technician Breloom with Swords Dance/Mach Punch or Shell Smash Gorebyss under Drizzle, but of course Archas isn't doing that because this is a Nuzlocke

Yeah I wish I could give this a try but im not exactly sure how to get hold of everything needed in order to T_T
Our party of three is ready to rock! I'm still not feeling great at all, so I won't be getting around to uploading episode 3 for a little while. Sorry about that.
Note that in the future, I will be doing all leveling and most normal Trainer battles off-camera, so to speak. I will record important Trainer battles, wild Pokemon capturing, and normal battles where something interesting or exciting happens.
So I'm a grass Pokemon, huh. Not sure how I feel about having my life depend on you, but if it's come down to this I know it'll feel like losing to Serejai if I die, so I better make it far.
Out of curiosity, what's the type of the first gym?
The first Gym in Black and White is determined by the type of the starter you get. It will always be the type that your starter is weak to. So, in this case, it's a Fire gym.
In Volt White, the battle is also a Rotation Battle instead of a standard Single Battle. Rotation Battles have three Pokemon from each side sent out at once, but only one fights at a time. You can switch to another Pokemon in your rotation at the start of every turn.

Oh, I see. I think Pearl was the last one I touched, so I'm not quite up to date with this stuff. The Rotation Battle stuff looks interesting. Sounds like that'd make it more attractive to have several good pokemon instead of just one that one-shots everything like I feel was the case in the previous games I've played.

In a normal run of Volt White, it's not a good idea to rely on one Pokemon to do everything for you. Rotation Battles, Triple Battles, and Double Battles are all more common, and many boss Trainer battles use those battle formats, so having just one Pokemon as your main dude is going to make things end badly.
In a Nuzlocke run of Volt White, if you try to beast through with only one Pokemon, you will lose. Very very quickly.
Hehe I am playing Sapphire over and over again atm since I'm too poor to buy a 3DS+B&W for myself. Pretty easy to go through the game with Swampert earthquaking and using flying type pokemon as the team partner while Swampert beasts through everything with good ol' EQ.
As for your illness, why don't you buy some Full Heal from the market?
You can't buy them until you beat the fifth Gym or something. D:
I've figured out a new system for uploading episodes that allows me to produce higher-resolution screenshots and videos more quickly than before. I'll try and have episode 3 out soon so I can see how well it works. Stay tuned~
Note: I screwed up the resolution size of the screenshots, so screenshots that I attempted to string together on one line to continue a spoken phrase don't actually do that. Sorry for being so sloppy with this episode. I'll do better next time.
Sure, why not. Let's all go stand in front of the group of hooded guys who look high as shit and may or may not have laser guns.
BAD GUY DETECTED
The only liberation my Pokemon are getting is death. Eventually.
If these tentacle porn tapes come out right, it'll be more than just a want/need relationship.
According to the last four generations and literally every episode of the TV show, it is. Who are you to claim otherwise, creepy eyepatch man?
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. My friend has a desk job at Silph Co. over in Saffron, and his Caterpie keeps getting punched by his boss's Machop because it's funny or something. That shit's gotta stop, man.
WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE LISTENING TO THIS LYING MOTHERFUCKER?
OH RIGHT, PLOT DEVELOPMENT, OF COURSE
Oh please, humans are superior to Pokemon in every way*. Why should we owe them anything? That's nonsense.
*Except for, you know, the "every way" part.
Oh, I get it now. You weird guys must be really big fans of the Beastie Boys. You're fighting for the right for Pokemon to party! That's a noble cause. Sorry for my misgivings before, I totally approve now.
Wow, you guys are trash. And here I was thinking you were devout followers of the Beastie Boys' ideologies, and now you're spouting garbage about equality? Get out of my house.
Oh, oh! I think I get it now! You're conducting this mad scheme of advertising around the country to fulfill your own secret nefarious plans to conquer the world!
Whoa, a Pokemon whisperer?! That's awesome! What's Fagtron500 saying? Does he like his name?? THIS IS SO COOL!!
He actually does. All of this guy's dialogue in the game is played really fast for some reason. Not sure why. Maybe he's a qualified speedtalker or something.
Man, if only Cheren saw things the way I do. He could be talking by proxy to his little shitty dudes right now. Lost opportunities...
Wow, bragging about his psychic powers. I'm not sure I like this guy.
Especially not when he has a name guaranteed to belong to a psycho rapist or something. Or he's a total hipster who wants to use a one-character name before it becomes cool.
Cheren, why are you telling a total stranger what our names are? Didn't your mom tell you not to do that when you were a kid?
And didn't she also tell you not to tell total strangers what you're doing and where you're going?
SURELY SHE TOLD YOU NOT TO TELL TOTAL STRANGERS ABOUT YOUR LIFE'S DREAMS??
God, you're an idiot.
That's the plan. I need a buncha Pokemon to replace the ones that die in my name.
Not if I can help it.
Whoa whoa whoa, he's coming on to us! He is a psycho rapist! I NEED AN ADULT!!
I hope not. If they do, they might actually rebel against me and tear me into thousands of pieces for my crimes against them. That would be pretty unfortunate.
So, you're a creepy psycho rapist Pokemon whisperer who attacked me for no reason, and you also a name-dropper?? Jeez, how low can you get?
... Well, that was kinda bizarre. And did you notice he has green hair? Would he really stoop so low as to be a member of GreenPeace too?
I dunno about you, but I'm worried. He attacked me, not you. What if he's targeting me? T_T
Wow, nice one. You managed to explain the exceedingly obvious and reveal your intentions to creepy hipsters all in a subtle tutorial for the player. That was slick.
Why is he my friend? Whatever. I guess I'd better follow the insanely linear path that my friend is commanding me to go in and go to Striation City to battle the first Gym.
BUT BEFORE I DO THAT I TOTALLY FORGOT SOMETHING IMPORTANT!!

I've been thinking about that, actually. I'm putting so much of the plot into the LP because a) it gives me a lot of material for funny captions, and b) some people don't really know the plot for Black and White, so I wanted to give them some background on the story. I think I may be overdoing it with the plot stuff, though, like you said.
In the future, I will weed out story events that aren't particularly important or interesting (like Bianca and Munna in the Dreamyard), and only pick the important bits of dialogue from major scenes. If I do that, I can probably get episodes out faster than before, since most of the delay between episodes consists of taking and editing screenshots. Streamlining that process will help a lot. I'm going to spend some time today figuring out the idea way to push out quality content faster; once I've done that, you can expect more stuff more often.
Yeah, you're overdoing the plot. There are some funny lines, but the pacing is really slow right now. For people who haven't played Black/White, I think this is a really awkward way to get the story and I don't think they're reading this for the story (though it is the best Pokemon plot). Showing the story is alright but I think you're showing too much
It seems a lot of people are blood thirsty and wanna see you fail to some stupid crit or freeze or something like that, but I like Nuzlockes because I think it's interesting to see what kind of a team you'll end up with
After my failure to discover any items of tremendous value inside the trash can, I decided to talk with some of the folks of Accumula Town to see if they had any useful trinkets I could steal liberate in the name of justice.
You make no sense, lady. That's like that World of Warcraft paradox where you need to do raid dungeons to get good gear, but you won't be accepted into raid groups unless you have good gear. I hope your son takes after your husband's intellect instead of yours.
You son of a bitch! Are you trying to pick a fight?! Huh?? HUH?!?
Accumula has nothing of interest, so I guess it's time to proceed toward Striaton City for that first Badge.
And hey, looks like we can catch some new Pokeslaves for our team! This doesn't look so bad, does it, MinoMi —

I hope it's a quick and painless death.
... I have shoes already, Mom.
... I know how shoes work, Mom. I also find it a bit disturbing that the manufacturer you purchased these from had to pack instructions with them. Makes me a little uncomfortable about the target demographic.
That was some pretty scary shit. I'll have to be more careful; two people are stalking me now.
Anyway, after that near-death experience, it's time to catch two more dudes! Let's see what the RNG Gods see fit to give us!
Huh. A Mankey, eh? I've never really used one before, but it might be handy for the second Gym. I know he's relatively frail, but he's also fast, so if I can avoid taking too many hits, he could really be a strong part of my team. Let's go for it!
Wow, this Mankey is a circus seal in disguise! I can start my own carnival troupe! This'll be great! :D
Successsssss~
You know the drill. Twelve hours to nickname Mankey with the following syntax:
<Pokemon original name> -> <Pokemon nickname
Okay, one more Pokemon to catch...
YES!!! A Weedle!! Beedrill is no joke in Volt White; he falls off rather quickly in terms of power, but he is incredibly strong for the first part of the game. What a find!
Quick, ixmike322! Chomp on that worm! Chomp it hard!
Go for the capture...
A winner is me!
Alright, just like with Mankey, you get twelve hours to —
Wait... something's happening!
TIME FOR THE BONUS ROUND! The way these work is that I will request a picture of a particular item or scenario to be sent to me via PM, and the person who sends the best picture will get exclusive rights to whatever nickname he or she wants for that Pokemon! You may obtain the image from any media you wish, including random Google searches or screencaptures from movies or TV shows. My methods of judging which picture is the "winner" will be unfair and draconian at best, but if you get lucky and/or find a kickass picture, you get naming rights!
For the Weedle Lightning Round, I request a picture of: a cow using a sword, preferably in some badass technique!

Mankey's new nickname is Spankbank! Rejoice, for MinoMino has a partner for when I begin those porn tapes!
As for Weedle, let us analyze the entries I received. Remember, in order to qualify for exclusive naming rights, you had to PM me a picture of a badass cow with a sword. Here were the entries, analyzed by order of submission:
A strong contender for the prize right off the bat. This is a particularly badass cow in a badass pose, wielding two swords! Capped comes out of the gate with his trump card in hand, and looks solid for the Lightning Round.
Now, 3FFA, while your cow does have a lightsaber, which is a particularly badass type of sword, the cow itself is in fact not a badass. He is cute and cuddly, but when one of the two main criteria is for a badass cow, and your cow is adorable instead, that wins you no points. Also, half of the lightsaber is a hilt, which is dumb. Ten points from Gryffindor.
Unfortunately, while your entry is as solid as Capped's, that's because it's the same entry, and Lightning Rounds operate on a first-come-first-served basis. Sorry, chap, but you're kinda boned. D:
Another strong entry. This cow does not have two swords like Capped's cow does, but not only is he in a badass pose, he is also a ninja cow. As we all know, ninja are among the most badass of people. This cow even has his own battle cry, something Capped's entrant lacks. Another fine entrant overall, and is in the running to take it all.
The "cow" portion of the requirement is not actually a cow in this picture, but a pixel art of a cow head made in Minecraft. The whole cow must be there. Remember, it's my contest, I get to be as unfair as I want.
As a subset of the above detail, this cow is as far from badass as you can get. In fact, the cows in Minecraft are extremely annoying, and anything annoying cannot possible be badass.
There is indeed a sword in the picture, but the cow head cannot even wield it, since it is only a head. Moreover, the sword is several meters behind the cow head, so he could not use it even if he wanted to.
Now, we know that both cows were badass and had swords. marttorn's excelled in the fact that the cow had its own awesome battle cry and was a ninja cow. Capped's had no battle cry, but had two swords, and his cow's costume reminded me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This can only mean that his cow was a TMNT. Let's be honest, marttorn, when your cow is only a ninja, how does it stand up to a cow that is not only a ninja, but a teenage mutant ninja turtle cow? (Never mind the fact that no qualities of a turtle are apparent on Capped's entry, it's obviously a TMNT.)
Because of this stunning imbalance of awesome, Capped wins the prize and is allowed to name Weedle whatever he chooses! :D
EDIT: In all seriousness I hope you keep up with this, I've seen so many Nuzlocke posters lose interest quickly (not on TL). These are quite fun to read.
In case you don't know, IV stands for "Individual Value". They are numbers that correspond to HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, and are values that determine the strength of that stat, ranging from 0 to 31. So, if my Snivy had an Attack IV of 0, and my friend's Snivy had an Attack IV of 31, his Snivy would have 31 points more in Attack at level 100 compared to my Snivy. Obviously, the closer your IVs are to 31, the better your Pokemon will be overall, but all IVs are set in stone upon capturing the Pokemon and cannot ever be changed.
I'm astounded at how good ixmike's IVs are for a random wild Pokemon. Those IVs are usually the sort you'd get after extensive breeding to maximize your chance at good IVs. The mustache dog is going to be friggin' amazing. MinoMino's also got pretty damn good IVs where they count. None of the others have any IVs worth writing home about, but none of them are terrible. SpankBank's are probably the worst, though.

having one 31 is not uncommon.
Having 5(!) stats at 31 is almost impossible for a wild.

It's entirely random what IVs show up. I agree that having 4 perfect IVs on a wild Pokemon is highly unusual, but that's the nature of the RNG. I'll take what I can get at this point anyway, since IVs won't have a very big impact on performance until the later levels.

Not entirely random. You can abuse the RNG if you really try, but its an enormous pain in the ass.
Last time, on Nuzlocke Volt White, I had just captured two new allies for my quest to not die. Now I'm on my way to Striaton City to fulfill my secondary goal of getting as far away from my mother as possible before she goes Kill Bill on my ass.

Better ready your wallet, because I expect you to hand over your dolla billz as soon as I dickstomp your team.
Bianca looks like she sorta has a lazy eye, doesn't she? Not exactly the most flattering picture possible...
And we start with my Archas dickworm against her pussy. Metaphorically speaking. Let's see how well Archas fares.
NOT SO WELL APPARENTLY. Retreat!
We'll have to send in SpankBank to take this dude out. Meowth hits pretty hard, and it'll be nice to have a Fighting-type on my side against it.
Because I'm stupid, I forgot that Mankey is pretty fragile, so he took a lot of damage switching in. I don't like using a Potion when I don't need to, because money is pretty scarce this early in the game, but Spanker's my best bet for taking the cat down a notch.
Low Kick slew the beast, but left SpankBank at low health. Gonna have to switch to mah boy MinoMino.
Regrettably, this Oshawott appears highly resistant to tentacle rape despite its innate weakness. Just keep it up, Mino.
Suck it, water otter!
And gimme my moneh!
I don't think anyone has used the phrase "tough cookie" since the Nixon administration. Pretty retro of you.
Oh, and you're going to lose a lot. Just so you know.
And here I am in Striaton. It's a city, so there's bound to be a lot of garbage around. And where there's garbage, there's sure to be cans to hold it in. First, though, let's go kick the Gym Leaders' collective ass.
I sure am, buddy. Now shove it.
That's highly irresponsible. You're telling me that a Trainer sanctioned by the official Pokemon League to test the worth of potential Champions is off doing random shit? Should revoke his Gym license IMO.
Target acquired, Captain.
Crap.
I guess it's time to go looking for that wayward Gym Leader so I can smoke his ass. Figuratively.
I guess we know who wears the pants in this relationship, eh?
Probably, and that frightens me more than you know.
Oh, hey apple-head. I am indeed searching for the one they call Gym Leader. Have you seen Gym Leader anywhere?
Bullshit. If he did, he must be invisible. Stop messing with me and just tell me where Gym Leader went.
Oh, I see how it is. You won't tell me until I destroy your manhood in a test of skill. Fine by me. I need more cash anyway.
Sorry, playing rough is a requirement for MinoMino and SpankBank.
Tryhard battle #2!
In Volt White, Wing Attack has buffed damage, so even a Starly can't be taken lightly. Flying Pokemon are very scary early in the game because they can do so much damage. I sent in my ace, ixmike, because he can probably take hits better than the other members of my team at this point (three are weak to Flying moves and Fagtron500 is fragile compared to ixmike).
My caution was rewarded. Mike took slight damage while annihilating Starly.
Fagtron500 is ready to shine, but a formidable hunk of bacon guards the way!
I love it when the opponent is a retard and just keeps using Tail Whip until he dies. :3
SUCK IT CHEREN!
Oh, Cut! In Volt White, Cut is actually a good move, becoming a Grass type move with 100% accuracy instead of 95. And a lot of Pokemon can learn Cut, so it's a great coverage move early on.
Now, who might you be...? Could the old dude with the sunglasses have turned into a callow youth?
Survey says yes.
Note: This will be the last episode for several days. I'll be on vacation for my birthday soon (!) and will be gone until Friday, so I won't have access to the emulator. Without the emulator, I have no means of updating. Sorry, folks.
Now I need to figure out how to set up an emulator for this on my mac... dang that's a good story. I also love how they changed moves to make this more interesting. Cut as a grass move makes so much more sense.

Not so sure about that one. You're cutting plants in this game after all (so it's effective against grass), why would you use a grass move for that? Scissors/knifes/blades are made from steel!
It depends how you think of it. It could even be a psychic move where you mind-bend it to cut. The various ways to cut it is why it can be taught to SO MANY different pokemon.
Just got an emulator set up, with game saved and loaded. Didn't check if I'm getting experience though...
Very different intro, I kinda wish I could get japanese to stop being displayed. I went to the TV in the house at the beginning and got a ton of japanese spewed out.

You mean Psycho Cut? Because that's an actual move.

I was not aware of this. Excuse my 2nd-generation knowledge.

I was always a fan of the new evolutions from older games, I quit "caring" about Pokemon after gen 3, and Psycho Cut is one of the signature moves of the Ralt's/Kirala/Gardevoir line's Gallade (Psychic/Fighting type ftw). My favorite newish pokemon was Mamoswine though. Mammoth version of the ice pig from G/S.

Ahha. Even though I dabbled with the 3rd gen I never used Gardevoir's evolutions (along with multiple other pokemon I didn't like) so I wouldn't know.

Legit loving this game so far and only on the 2nd starter fight hahaha, better GFX and whatnot are cool as im used to gen2, tried gen3 a little, and yeah my ROM is fine no EXP bug
so i dont feel like a thief for emulating, i dont own a ds
I cant have as much fun without archas' funny comments though..hurry back dude
EDIT: This game is fucking hard.
EDIT2: Right after said edit, Bianca battle at route 2 KO'd me. gg no re. Meowth OP, Lvl 8 wild caterpie before even more OP, killed my ninjapatty then died to a crit.

Not so. X and Y will be 3DS exclusive, but Black and White 2 are just fine on the DS. There are several multiplayer features that are 3DS exclusive, but the games themselves have no issue running on a standard DS.

I wouldn't bet on it. Games designed for the 3DS will never be backwards compatible with the standard DS. The reason B2W2 are different is because they were designed for the DS, with a few extra perks if you have a 3DS.

I was lead to believe it wasn't worth it on DS, but that could just be my friends. Regardless, I'm skipping it and the others until the 3DS gets some more strategy games out. Fire Emblem will only last me so long.
I may be on vacation until Friday, but I have a USB memory stick with all the relevant stuff for playing Volt White. I'm not sure how much I'll get done, since I'll be on vacation with my dad (who I don't get to see very much), but I promise at least one new episode immediately after I return.
P.S. seeing how I'm not the only "never-played-beyond-Gen-2" kind of people here, might be useful if you draw more parallels or insert short explanations here and then. Cheers!

Good call. I'll be sure to do this more as I find appropriate times to do so.
This is an interesting review I just found. Thank goodness that I don't care about box names... the holding L when choosing a move to see the stats is pretty cool.
Welp, I just died on the fourth gym using the same rules as this run. The amount of coverage moves gym leaders have is crazy, and a lot of them being doubles battles seriously complicates things. Them having competitive movesets against my shitty in-game ones is unfair

The fourth Gym is easier than the second and third because it's a single battle format. Double battles are incredibly unforgiving, since both opponents can just straight-up kill one of your guys by teaming up. With singles, you have much more leeway. Not to say Elesa is an easy fight, but her team is more manageable and less likely to bullshit you out of a win.
I'm attempting a (non Nuzlocke) run where I try to keep all of my Pokemon within 3 levels of eachother. Right now I have a Pigeotto, Luxio, and Dewott all at lvl 23 and am about to hit the 2nd gym. Only battle I've ever lost a poke in was that goddamned Meowth in the first Bianca battle...I actually wiped due to 3 crits in 4 moves and 2 flinches off Bite.
Yeah, Pokemon like Pidove, Meowth, Absol, and Beedrill are really scary in Nuzlocke runs because their abilities can increase the frequency/damage of critical hits.

Whoops, I meant the fifth. Fucking Sand Rush Swords Dance Excadrill. I'd probably lose to that non-Nuzlocke.

Right. Yeah, that Excadrill is annoying as hell. If you manage to find a Slowpoke with Drizzle or a Vulpix with Drought, though, Clay becomes much easier without his sandstorm to back him up.

Yeah, going into it (I read gym leader teams ahead of time like a little bitch) I figured that would be my only shot, but didn't manage to find either. All I had was Krookodile, who was OHKO'd while trying to Dig

If I don't get a weather Pokemon by the time I reach Clay, my plan is to buy the Reflect TM from Nimbasa and try and tank Excadrill's damage after it's been halved by Reflect. Excadrill is certainly the most troublesome Pokemon on Clay's team, so you really need some way to lessen its capacity to wreck your whole team. Weather and Reflect are the two best ways to do that.
Really, the thing about Excadrill is that it's not all that hard to kill, but unless you have a specific plan to deal with it, it's very difficult to kill it without losing some Pokemon of your own.
At least those aren't names used for animals... which are what pokemon are. Imo the Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam is cool and fun to kids thus it works quite well. Golem I consider to be an ok name... but Krookodile is just stupid.

It's a Dark type crocodile Pokemon with a bandit/thief design. Crook crocodile. Krookodile. Seems okay to me.
Omg... that place where your Mom stops you to give you a new pair of shoes has the most gigantic boulder I've ever seen on a DS screen. Maybe if I catch a Machop and train it....

what about Seel
Seel is real. Trust me. The whole 'seels don't have superpowers' thing is just a huge coverup.
In other news, I am planning to win with only 3 pokemon total to battle. 3rd pokemon is undetermined. Any more pokemon will be used purely for HMs and in fights will do nothing except maybe use up my poke balls in trainer battles. Probably won't keep you posted.
I decided to take this challenge (sort of) because it looks fun.
Currently doing it in vanilla. Rules are the same, only two tries per area, KO = permadeath. I'm also making it so whenever anyone offers a trade or to give me a pokemon I have to take it (assuming I can).
So far I've caught 5 pokemon total (1 in route 1, 2 in route 2, 1 was given to me in dreamyard).
Tepig Patrat Purrlion Lillipup Pansage
The two bolded ones are dead (1 I was stupid, other got 1-hitted by a bastard using bind).
It should be noted this is my first time picking up pokemon in years, and the last one I played was silver/gold. I also haven't look up the stats and such of the new pokemons/types. Needless to say doing this blind will be a bitch haha.
Off to do the gym leader (I'm so fucked). Wish me luck.
EDIT: Wow, I got my ass handed to me. "Hey, I'm a water pokemon user!" *First pokemon out has nothing to do with water *Crushes my lineup since I had it to specifically counter water
Well, time to start over.....Only had 3 pokemon and I lost the battle.

Between like 8 and 11. I started again and made it past the gym with no losses (fuck yeah). It so nerve-wracking though haha.

I started a Sacred Gold one last night, and the game is incredibly polished and looks great (I've only played some of the GBA ones on emulator before, including a Fire Red Omega nuzlocke up through the 8 gyms, as well as the PokeMMO earlier this year).
I can see why you have a rule to catch first 2 pokemon instead of just 1 like most Nuzlocke runs though. I only beat the first gym leader but this game is freaking hard. Random crits are just so -_-. Still not as bad as Brock's Onix/Vulpix in Omega though.
After fixing the bloody exp bug by actually playing the volt white version I found out that repel doesn't work
I found 2 exeggcutes while having repel on, anyone else tried this?
(I'm playing this softcore though, I've been knocked out 4 times so far and my pokemons have fainted "many" times, I'm too softhearted to loose my manz like that )
Playing Volt While for the first time casually and I´ve come to the conclusion that Gym leaders will horribly murder your friends unless you are outleveling them by the minium of 7 levels each.
My team has been equal or 1-2 levels higher than theirs and I´ve barely beaten them with dozens of tries and massive amount of healing(Granted my team has few great weaknesses atm).

I don't know your team or how experienced you are at building a team (and I've never played that generation), but you can't expect to simply swap in someone with a type advantage and expect to sweep the gym (as you can easily do in the regular games). As an example, in Fire Red you can use a Graveler to crush Surge, but in Omega his Raichu 1HKO's you with a Surf.
You don't need all the pieces of competitive teams, but your life is exponentially easier with some bulk on your team. For example, Umbreon with Confuse Ray + Toxic (especially with leftovers, and eventually Moonlight) can stall against almost everything that's not a STAB fighting, and has made life infinitely easier for my Omega Nutzlocke run. If your team is entirely offense with very weak defensive stats, you can end up taking more damage than you heal and getting swept. I haven't played White so I don't know what you have available, but it's the same concept.
What's your team by the way? (I'm sorry for going off topic, but seeing as we're not getting any updates on the run for a few days...)
Just incase you didnt know about this, here's a tip : if you want to learn to build good pokemon teams, you should visit Smogon.com. You can then test teams at play.pokemonshowdown.com. I guess in nuzlocke runs it wont be so easy to get entire teams, but atleast you will get a better idea of how ideal teams should be constructed, and learn things like sweepers and stuff like that.

Only problem with this is in a Nuzlocke you don't get to choose what to catch. If you end up with very little bulk (as almost all early Pokes have) you're going to be in trouble, especially with Doubles battles not letting you switch when the opponent switches. I wanted more bulk heading into the fifth gym but ended up catching an Ekans and a Buneary on the route leading there
What's your team by the way? (I'm sorry for going off topic, but seeing as we're not getting any updates on the run for a few days...)
Just a bunch of pokemon I like and found early in the game: Beedril, Venomoth(sleep powder ftw), Serperior, Fraxure and Pidgeot.
So glaring weaknesses against Flying, Rock and Fire. No water, fire or electric moves at all. Cant deal any damage against Steel.
Or this was my team..But now after 5 gyms (and all of them being lvl 45) im replacing all but Fraxure. I have already caught everything and my new team is Fraxure, Tangrowth, Duskul, Steelix, Skorupi and Larvesta. So I have to level up my currently average of lvl 33 team but it is going to be better than the old one.

This is why I don't think overleveling is a big deal in Volt White: because levels simply don't mean too much. Every Trainer in the entire game has EV-trained Pokémon with perfect IVs in all stats. You, the player, do not and will not have that unless you go completely out of your way for it. You basically need to be several levels above your opponent just to be on even terms with them in battle. I might have a beastly Lillipup, for instance, but an enemy Trainer's Lillipup is absolutely perfect in all ways, so my Lillipup needs to have a level advantage to negate the overall stat disadvantage.

I fucking hate my life. I was doing my nuzlocke run, everything went ok. Pidgey + some fag bug i found died but i ended up with my water starter + fire monkey + OP normal dude + Clefairy. This normal dude had uproar and fucking destroyed people. The clefairy + normal dude was from the graveyard place along with the fire monkey from the dude who gave me it. 5% encounter chance clefairy on a fucking nuzlocke run.
Then i ACED the fricken 1st gym, No deaths, absolutely awesome fight.
So i was loading up just now to carry on playing, i hit savestate instead of loadstate and overwrote my savefile. NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
At least i can delete the old savefile to restart with a proper save now

I tried to but i had already saved in a previous run and i had to delete it at the start menu, which i cant do after ive played and saved with savestate without restarting, i sure will be next time :<
my attempt at this game nuzlocke mode is going fairly shockingly - my 3rd attempt already(!!), and I'm sitting on 2 pokemonz, a 24 servior and a 24 azumarill. munchlax caused allll sorts of problems, and the venoshock thang in the 2nd gym.. oooh my. enjoying it though!
What I do is always use two savestates before turning off the emulator in order to avoid stuff like that. It's never happened to me, but better safe than sorry.
Happened on more games then i can count when i was younger with a GBA emu.
Oh advance wars, tactics ogre, why does thou hate me so. I'd be almost sour but my PS3 decided on 4 different occasions to break and get my 15-20 hour FF13 runs wiped all @ Pulse. Yeah...fuck my playstation. Ok to be fair the 1st one was my brother in laws PS3 and the save is still there, the 3rd time i literally smashed my PS3 but still Twice man!
Pity i dont learn. Either way new nuzlocke run. THIS TIME NAME ALL POKEMANZ LASHIKA.

I hear you on that...I had to look up pokemon constantly since in a Nutzlocke you can't risk throwing random pokemon and attacks at enemies to see what works.
If you like the old school games though, check out PokeMMO. You get to play online and only have access to the originals for most of the game, and it has a vastly improved UI (for example, the game keeps track of EVs for you). I would Nutzlocke that but I think I'd go insane grinding without a speed up option.
I went against the OP's advice and started up my first Nuzlocke run on Blazeblack (clean). I'm up to the first cave area and it's been so fun so far. I added 2 rules to the OP to make things actually challenging and not "grind until you can win". My 2 self rules I added were each pokecenter/ heal spot can only be used once. I can reset the game, but only at the first turn of a trainer battle, since I couldn't find a way to look up what they'll send out. I lost my Ralts Rhianna R.I.P. to the first gym leader, and I've been broke for the entire playthrough so far, relying on only potions. Wish me luck on making it to the next pokemon center. =p
If it's undoable I might slip in for next time "bonus pokemon center visit after beating a gym", similar to his bonus pokemon rule. Does anyone know where the first vending machine is?
This would definitely be more doable with Pokemon Black or White, but the variety you get from wild encounters in Blaze/Volt make playthroughs more unique, so it's worth it.
Yeah i made it so i can only use a pokecenter for each area once too, i have a feeling i will be revising this rule later. I also gave myself 1 free resurrect on any pokemon i chose throughout the game. EDIT: As soon as i post that some BS wurmple escapes a pokeball with 1 hp and crits my snivy. Well there goes the free res. The wurmple is now called Cuntfuck and i hope he dies.
By the way, is it better to skip trainers as much as possible the first time you enter a region and rely on wild pokemon for leveling up, then revisit the area later for the money, or trainers first? I suppose this choice is influenced a lot by the pokemon center rule too...
If you're going to just grind for exp and don't mind cheating it a bit you can just use an AR code to rematch trainers instead of grinding on wild pokes. Yeah yeah not as "legit" but it saves so much time and I didn't care about EVs in my run. Killing those nurse/doctor guys' Chanseys for like 3k exp per rematch was amazing.
I might need to set a limit for things like challenge rock too along with the pokemon center restriction, because if I really wanted to grind without pokemon centers, those daily income spots are pretty exploitable.
The runs people are coming up with are crazy lol I'm totally impressed by everyone challenging themselves, but am I the only one enjoying playing Volt White clean just cause it's fun without rules? It's nice to have a bit of a challenge and have access to so many different pokemon.
They've probably already had tons of fun playing it normally and are just challenging themselves for additional fun. I kinda wanna run a romhack Pokemon game too. I'm having so much fun with Black 2 vanilla, no challenges, so these romhacks sound pretty fun
I did Nuzlocke even though I haven't played those games just because it was pretty boring to play through normally. I would just hold down spacebar and spam abilities the entire game with no repercussions or strategy.
Without challenging rules Pokemon becomes extremely boring. If Nuzlocke runs had never been thought up (impossible with Pokemon games present) then I would never buy Pokemon past the original Game Boy Color games I have.
Nuzlocke has probably kept peoples' interest past competitive scenes and first playthroughs. I know I play it exclusively even on new pokemons now because vanilla is boring. I like to FEEL challenged in a game, and neither the story (lol) or the gameplay is enough to keep me hooked otherwise. Plus I've never been a collector in games, so not being able to catch loads doesn't bother me.
So! After losing against Clay on my original attempt, I decided to treat the run officially as a loss but essentially use a Continue and keep going since I wanted to finish the game. I notice Skyla is a Triple Battle, and figure I'd lose at least 3-4 Pokemon if I go up against her mano a mano, because half my team is Flying-weak - I picked up a Magnezone in Chargestone Cave but her Archeops and Gliscor both have Earthquake which would probably OHKO me.
Luckily, the other Pokemon I picked up in the cave was Ferrothorn. Two fodder Pokemon later and... (note contains spoilers on Skyla's team)
The brave sacrifices sent out to allow a Triple Battle. Note: I'm not sure if you actually have to do this but I did it anyway. Sorry Gligar you could have been useful possibly
Mandibuzz Tormented me early on which was a pain in the ass, and on top of that had Rest as well. I Iron Defense'd up to +6 in the beginning to fend off Skyla's entirely physical (sans Swanna) team. Braviary and Skarmory killed themselves in timely fashion thanks to Brave Bird recoil, my Iron Barbs, and my Rocky Helmet.
Gliscor and Archeops followed, though it took a little longer because they each had Earthquake which is a non-contact move, so I had to wait out their PP before they started killing themselves. With all three enemies Leech Seeded and me at +6 Def I just rofl'd around and occasionally Iron Headed to tack on damage.
Swanna was kind of a pain in the beginning since Hurricane would do 65% of my HP, but I stalled it out with Moomoo Milks (best potion in the game!) until it started using Ice Beams instead, which only did around 30%. Twaved it and let Leech Seed do the rest.
Mandibuzz was a huge bitch because he'd rest over and over again, and Iron Head was too weak to do anything. Finally got him as he Brave Birded himself into low HP right as I hit him with Thunder Wave (Iron Head was on Torment-cooldown), got the Iron Head next turn for the solo win.
that was longer than I expected lol, was really fun to do

Well now I've reached the first vending machine and things should be easy even with no pokecenters. Potions were so bad for cost efficiency. Not gonna lie though, I cheated with a couple resets because I wanted to see if it was possible to do without my mistakes. I'm going to start over from here because I'm fairly sure at this point that this ruleset is possible to win with, if you pick oshawott, and it's crazy fun. Looking forward to doing this without the resets.

Sorry, guys, but I honestly don't know if I want to keep this up. I started this thread with the idea that it'd be really fun to do this sort of thing. After that initial excitement wore off, though, I realized it's not nearly as fun as I'd expected. It feels like work to set up every episode, and that's not the mindset I had anticipated at all. If you're not enjoying yourself while doing a little project like a let's play, what's the point, y'know? Like, I've been avoiding using the computer just because I don't want to sit down and pound out a new episode.
Mostly, though, I'm disappointed in myself for letting you guys down after all this; you guys showed a lot of support, and I'm being a total asshole for shattering your expectations. I feel a sort of obligation to continue because of you folks being so supportive, but again, if I'm not having a fun time doing the LP, it's just a grind to fulfill that obligation. I think that's not the right mindset one should have for this, so as much as I hate letting you guys down, I'm just not having fun.
Again, I'm sorry about that. I may or may not continue the series, but don't be surprised if it just ends here.
We know how tough it can be to screenshot every single thing and attach a witty narration. As Capped said, at least a ton of people got motivated. Maybe this thread will keep running for a while with people sharing their tales.

I think Antz said at one point if you try to force it, it doesn't come out funny, so don't feel obligated. You introduced some TLers like myself to the hacked games and nuzlocke runs, which made this game a lot more interesting to me. So thanks for that, but I'm sure my Planetside 2 outfit isn't happy about my sudden disappearance without explanation. It's been so addicting. =x
Yeah, you inspired me to take 2 days off work (may be kidding about this part) and play through the hacked Nutzlocke, and that was a lot of fun. I never knew about hacked roms, and I've never done a Nutzlocke of my own before. Thanks.

I had no idea there were so few people who knew about hacked roms. I assume that means you don't know about randomizers.
Actually, on the topic of randomizers, if I randomize Volt White, that should mean that all the trainers will still have strong pokemon, just different ones, right?
It sucks that the main run won't continue but I agree that it seemed to introduce a lot of people to hacked/nutzlocke runs, including myself, so it's still a win for me.
Well, this thread has already kinda become an assorted Nuzlocke LPs. If you don't have the energy to set up screenshots and all that, you can do what others have done and just give brief updates, and swear at the game for hating you.
Also, showing you support? I dunno man, all I ever see here is "When's the update? It's been 32 minutes since the last update. This is totally unacceptable. Hurry up and die"

I dont even come close to qualifying, I've barely ever even contributed something to a discussion. I stopped mostly for the same reason as Archas, in addition to the fact that it became hard for me to keep coming up with stuff to say about the screenshots, or make it more interesting than 'i went here and beat this trainer'. In fact I have a whole 2 pages worth of screenshots just sitting in a folder on my PC at home which I just couldnt think of a single thing to write about.

I did say I was gonna finish my thread, no matter how long the delays in between, though I feel like at this point noone would really bother replying to the thread anymore and that defeats the purpose of an interactive thread

Man, I feel like such a dick for doing this.
But seriously though, I dont think anyone thinks you're a dick. Just take a break, play some pokemon just for the sake of playing pokemon, and see how you feel about it after a while. The desire to continue the story can come back, even if it takes a long time

You'd be surprised.
Well...
Since archas doesnt feel like continuing anyway...
Its an older game, and many of the older posts have broken image links, but I'll be fixing them over the next few days. For today, until TI3 starts, I'll just be updating.
Shameless hijack? I dont know what you're talking about.

Haha was kidding about the pokeball man. Pretty funny though.
Yeah seems like a big thing to do and need to always have ideas otherwise it just doesn't work well.
I think I'm going to do one of these too, I've been considering doing a Nuzlocke challenge of some pokemon game for a while, but I got distracted by doing a Celes-Edgar-Setzer challenge in FF6 Advance (which I have now finished.)
I'm not really sure if i want to do it on volt white or standard white. Or B/W2 which i haven't played normally yet.
Welp, I managed to finish my run, restarting after I lost to Clay.
Having Ferrothorn and Cofagrigus (Steel/Ghost in VW) was ridiculously good against pretty much all of the Elite Four, N, and Ghetsis. Cofagrigus especially, against the Fighting-type E4, could just afk, Will-o-Wisp anything that didn't have Guts, and then be used to heal up my other doubles Pokemon, who was usually boosting up with a dance move. Both of them died to Ghetsis because his Hydreigon got two bullshit Draco Meteor crits in a row :/
Volcarona, Flygon and Krookodile carried the main team through the E4 with Quiver Dance, Dragon Dance, and Moxie respectively, almost never had to switch.
Darmanitan and Zekrom weren't actually used in any way, I just wanted my living high-leveled Pokes in the picture. Also really surprised my starter survived the whole run.
It was pretty fun, I think I'll try something similar with Storm Silver~

I can tell you that standard white won't be near as challenging.

I got the the second gym then rage-quitted.
Every fucking pokemon that jackass of a leader had, for some reason had the "Retaliate" ability. OP as fucking hell man. Not to mention the two first pokemon out have an "Intimidate" special ability.
Does anyone know if there is a good hacked rom like Volt White but for Red/Blue or their remakes? Something to make your opponents have somewhat competitive movesets?
