I came across this game just yesterday and it literally blew my mind completely. Its crazy to think this is an indy game which was funded with kickstarter. Its about to release on 16th of October and from what ive played so far in beta, its an awesome and fun game.
So what the hell is this ?
Its in the same genre as Mount and Blade and War of the Roses but its all done in first person. This is a genre that i have wanting to love since ive played the old Rune game basicly. I just love melee combat but nobody has done it right. War of the Roses as with the old Mount and Blade have very limited movement skills on top of a clunky combat system which isnt very responsive or skill based.
Chivalry on the other hand
Has an amazing combat system which lets you string together your attacks so you can do combos. Blocking is done right also as you cant block forever with a sword as it only lasts about 1 second, so you have to time and aim the sword perfectly. With a shield you can block for long time and you can even "Shield dash" forwards to keep opponents away.
You can also kick to get an opening on shield users and even feint attacks. Basicly during an attack you can feint to stop the attack which tricks the opponent to lower his guard. Any attacks can be done while moving as well so you can for example jump down from a balcony while doing an overhead slash for incredible damage. So this results in an incredibly fun and skill based combat system never seen before.
Graphics in this game are simply amazing and on top of that they have very brutal and realistic wounds in this game. You can cut off any limb of the body it seems. One overhead slash done correctly will cut someones head off! Animations on this are simply well done. While War of the Roses and Mount and Blade looks bad in combat, this one looks awesome.
Objectives and Fun
One thing that annoyed me in newly released War of the Roses was that there were really no objectives other than taking over certain areas. Everyone was just killing each other. In Chivalry you have very cool and physics based objective.
One that lets you push a siege weapon towards a caste wall, so you have to run behind the weapon to push it, while the opponents need to stop it. If they manage to get it to the wall they have to break down the doors and then the next step of the objective opens. Suddenly you are inside defending a king.
I dont know what other objectives there are as ive played it only 1 day so far. But this is just amazing. It feels cooperative and amazingly fun. You have tons of weapons at your disposal and you can even have throwing knifes !
I highly recommend this game and i only payed 24.99 USD for the preorder, which is too cheap honestly. I have some footage of me streaming it yesterday on http://www.twitch.tv/avean . Just look at my archive if you want to see.
As a big fan of Mount and Blade, I didn't really get with War of the Roses. It certainly looks nicer but there are a lot of elements of gameplay I don't like.
This game however just looks fucking baaadass. Gonna have to get it at some point
Yeah, I have to agree that this looks a lot more promising and conceptually solid than War of the Roses to me. Having said that, WotR also looked super promising until I actually got my hands on it and realized that the combat is actually quite bad, and that the third person view seems forced onto the game that would work a lot better in first person view. So I'll withhold final judgement until I can actually play Chivalry.
This might be the game i waited for all these years that might not make me keep coming back to Jedi Outcast multiplayer.
Also i dont think any game EVER can do melee (with force) combat better or more skill based than that game, but if this is even half as skilled based as that i'm buying it.
I'm guessing this is like a stand-alone game of the Chivalry mod for half-life 2? That mod was extremely fun so I'm definitely going to look into this.
Cool, might give this a look. Was disappointed with WotR when I tried the beta, could have been much better with some sort of progressing, overaching mini-campaign. Was fun for a bit, but I lost interest fairly fast.
I watched ForceSC2Strategy play this on youtube. Looked pretty good actually. I haven't played it yet but there does look like some flaws. For one, the fights look pretty repetitive. I also don't know how much skill plays a factor in whether you kill your opponent or die. Also if you are in a battle against 2+ people, it looks completely one-sided. I'm not sure if it was just Force's skill playing it or not but it looks difficult enough just to kill 1 person, killing 2 at a time looks incredibly unlikely. Also the run speed seemed kinda slow. Maybe that will get buffed or something.
It looked fun and all, but too repetitive for me I think.

Our first game was the Half Life 2 mod called Age of Chivalry. And Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is its successor. We've revamped quite a bit and definitely added a lot so please do check it out!

It is First person but there is also an option for third person if you want to play that way. And yes, we have a game-type called "Team Objective" where you complete objectives on the map although we also have gametypes such as FFA, TDM, and Last team standing.
Feel free to ask me more questions...I'll do my best to keep up ^^
Edit: On a side note, did you really have to use that super old image? That was from like 2 years ago!
this certainly looks better than war of the roses, but your opinion on M&B is unjustified as it has all that blocking, kicking, fainting, parrying, riposte etc.
it would actually be the "king of melee combat" game that this game has to measure up to for most people that are into these games.
I will certainly keep my eyes on this. I enjoyed Age of Chivalry so this comes as a pleasant surprise. I assume the game will be available on Steam then?
