Also, adding to the bug list, for some reason my main char has 40 Int at the moment ... no idea why. My haylstorm literally covers the whole screen.
A bit of both. I think it is level 13 when you can't progress any further without doing parts of the main quest. It also ramps up in difficulty pretty quickly, so I think their design thought was to do a few levels, go out and do other stuff and then do a few levels more.

I really don't understand why the devs left that part out completely. BG had a different puzzles all over the place and it felt just so much better than just slaying through hords of enemies every single dungeon. I think this is my main concern with the game, otherwise I really liked it. I like what they did more than the puzzles. A puzzle is hard once then you know it and has no re-play value. What they did is make you be able to use athletics and similar abilities in the story board. Giving you multiple ways to solve different problems. So one time you fight through the enemies. The next time you talk your way out of it. Or maybe you jump over the cliff and get a sprained ankle or not. It could have been developed more but the direction is one I like since it makes the same place play out differently due to different stats or choices.
this so much! not only does it feel like a real pen&paper rpg, it gives me the feeling there are real choices that alter what i will see in the game. it definately gives a strong incentive to replay the game.
pillars of eternity is the first game i have bought for full price for at least 5 years and i am enjoying the shit out of it, even though it has some serious bugs (i have a rather strange one here, on every map spawn 3 wurms, the one your chanter can summon. they dont move, but draw aggro from mobs and fight back if attacked.). the difficulty could be a bit higher for my liking. i play on hard with the vanilla companions and a custom made rogue (seriously obsidian, every good adventure group needs a rouge, why dont you give us one???!) and except the last fight were i get rolled every time i went through the game pretty easily without ever using a potion, scroll or even trying to improve my gear. if they can patch out the bugs quickly, this will be one of the best games in years.

After playing for 20 hours, i felt some stuff missing. There is no day/night cycle. Shopkeepers and npc's don't sleep and as far as i can tell, there is no difference between 3AM and 3PM. Day/night cycle was implemented so well in arcanum(dark wizard sold spells at night, people actually went to sleep, there were some quests you could start only at night) I am only at act 2 so maybe i missed some stuff but i don't see the need to camp or get a room from an inn if my guys aren't completely out of spells/critically tired.
Abilities are almost completely useless except when you need them at scripted events. Athletics to 3, one guy with mechanics and thats all. It was so good in neverwinter nights(number of abilities you could improve each levle scaled with int and some of them actually helped)
There are some good talents but most of them are generic stuff like +10 X, +5 Y, %25 Z. Even though we get so few of them i don't get excited for the next level
There is no pickpocketing. I think this is a really basic concept and should be in the game. Steal keys -> rob someones house when they are sleeping. Stealth is disappointing.
I am still loving this game and i did not play anything else for 20 hours in a weekend for a long time. Still, it could have been so much better
And for people saying priests and wizards are underpowered, try to use their spells effectively. I think i am level 8 and cone of fire is probably the ability i use the most with aloth. priests has so many useful buffs too. At least use their once per encounter ability every time. I am playing on hard and i am doing fine with a party with no custom companions so far(I used a custom dwarven fighter before i found the paladin npc for a while though)

Well maybe in a sequel The limited budget makes it hard for them to make many iterations of game systems. Stuff to improve are always easier to fix in a sequel than to spend money to reiterate the same game. So let's hope they'll be making a sequel of the magnitude BG2 improved over BG1 :D

Something that I hadn't thought of at first: there is no multiclassing. That right there might be the biggest disappointment for me. You can somewhat pick in a pool of common talents, but those don't feel very fun at all. I miss NWN/NWN2 type of character building :D

Wizard isn't bad but druid does pretty much the same things just with slightly better spells, have access to all available spells and is bit tankier. In simillar way other classes have parts of priest kit so in well rounded team with addition of few items you have access to all priest does but with better offensive presence. Another issue is both classes are 20 accuracy which is extremly annoying.

Ice cone spell from level 1, fire burst from level 2 and storm from level 3 are really good elemental damage dealers for druid(i thought you were complaining about druid at first sorry) My main character is a druid and i thought i was going to be a badass shapeshifter. NOPE! Everything kills my werecat guy because he has low defense :D So i gave him an arbalest put him in the back row and he casts spells only if needed

I'm a big fan of BG/NWN games so I finally decided to get Pillars of Eternity. So far only 2h in and most of it was spent on replaying the intro on different classes trying to find the one I like the most. I like the extensive descriptions on everything, it really adds immersion and supplements the visual part of the game nicely. They thing I don't like so far is that all classes need to put points into might, because it increaes your dmg and healing, pretty baffling choice from the devs. It's not as bad if might is highly recommended for your class, but if it's not you need to spread points quite a lot if you want to do dmg. Also a rogue backstabbing stuff with spear and mace is pretty silly. Other than that I can't wait to get home and play some more!

just a friendly warning not to engage high level ogre druids in elmshorn. their version of insect swarm does not expire, ever. it consists through location changes and rests and while a save/load makes the status icon disappear, its effect is still listed as active in the character overview. not 100% sure if it is applied though, because it doesnt seem to do any damage. still a super anyoing bug.

Really like the ambiance, the visuals, the animations, the description texts, the music is quite good too.

I'd kind of expected something along the lines of 2E's simplified dual/multiclassing, but I'm not surprised they took it out.
|
Agree.. AD&D dual/multiclassing was cool... 3.5 and later was just stupid, on higher Levels "multiclassing" felt kinda mandatory because the benefits were just way bigger than staying true to your class...
|
That's mostly because prestige classes essentially became a band-aid for poor class design. Especially for caster classes, which got virtually all their class features at level 1-2, and then only got casting advancement at level-ups (Wizard, Sorcerer, Cleric). When your class advancement gives you no new class features, casting advancement prestige classes become strictly better.
|
As far as multiclassing goes I would not mind being able to multiclass like in BG games (but no dual classing), but I don't want NWN1/2 multiclassing, it would not work well with how the game mechanics are designed.
I would not mind Prestige classes for PoE2 or something similar like at lvl 10 choosing from two options per class.
|
It's ok, there's no way we'd have ever gotten 3E style multiclassing thanks to Josh Sawyer's personal vendetta against min-maxing, lol.
|
It wasn't just Casters... It was even more „dire“ for other classes? At least Clerics/Sorcs/Wizards get more spells… What do Warriors or Barbarians get later?
I'm no D&D geek in any way, but when playing IWD2 I really couldn't justify my Barbarian staying a single class Barbarian over getting Fighter Levels... He had everything what made Barbarians nice and there was just like no downside to multiclassing him.
I mean BG2/AD&D had its issues too due how easy it was to switch classes and get your first class working again. So class switching was way too easy/strong anyway (is there any reason not to start as Berserker? No matter what class you wanted later? Except that starting as some other Class was even more beneficial depending on what exactly you went for?) Multiclassing was also broken by default if you didn’t run around with a 6 man Party (which i never did after my first 2 playtroughs, I mostly went for 3 or 4 member parties). BUT it was fun to experiment around with it and imho that matters more than any balance issues that might arise.

Any advice for the raedric quest? I killed the 2 guards at the entrance of the castle, but when i get in a least 10 gars jump me and i get reckted :D. I have only 3 guys in my party, i really want to use compagnons and not custom made characters...
|
You can get there back later when you get more party members, this quest isn't needed to progress anywhere,

There are some alternate paths into the castle you can take. Kolsc(the guy gave you the quest) says something like "a frontal assault is impossible" You can add two more companions to your party at that point

I'm enjoying the game so far, though the story is ok (so far), a lot of the side quests are superficial and some of the writing is a bit over the top (I guess some people like it that way). Some of the campanions lack character, but thats fine. The art work is really nice and so is the music. I'm a huge fan of BGII though this game is comparable, it really isn't :p
